Festus ergo cum venisset in provinciam,And so, when Festus had arrived in the province, post triduum ascendit Jerosolymam a Cæsarea.after three days, he ascended to Jerusalem from Caesarea.
Adieruntque eum principes sacerdotum et primi Judæorum adversus Paulum:And the leaders of the priests, and those first among the Jews, went to him against Paul.et rogabant eum,And they were petitioning him,
postulantes gratiam adversus eum, asking for favor against him,ut juberet perduci eum in Jerusalem,so that he would order him to be led to Jerusalem, insidias tendentes ut interficerent eum in via.where they were maintaining an ambush in order to kill him along the way.
Festus autem respondit servari Paulum in Cæsarea:But Festus responded that Paul was to be kept in Caesarea,se autem maturius profecturum.and that he himself would soon go there.
Qui ergo in vobis,“Therefore,”ait,he said, potentes sunt,“let those among you who are able, descendentes simul, descend at the same time,si quod est in viro crimen, and if there is any guilt in the man, accusent eum.they may accuse him.”
Demoratus autem inter eos dies non amplius quam octo aut decem,Then, having stayed among them no more than eight or ten days, descendit Cæsaream,he descended to Caesarea.et altera die sedit pro tribunali,And on the next day, he sat in the judgment seat,et jussit Paulum adduci.and he ordered Paul to be led in.
Qui cum perductus esset,And when he had been brought, circumsteterunt eum, qui ab Jerosolyma descenderant Judæi,the Jews who had come down from Jerusalem stood around him, multas et graves causas objicientes, throwing out many serious accusations, quas non poterant probare:none of which they were able to prove.
Paulo rationem reddente:Paul offered this defense:Quoniam“Neither against the law of the Jews, neque in legem Judæorum, nor against the temple, neque in templum, nor against Caesar, neque in Cæsarem quidquam peccavi.have I offended in any matter.”
Festus autem volens gratiam præstare Judæis,But Festus, respondens Paulo, wanting to show greater favor to the Jews, dixit:responded to Paul by saying:Vis Jerosolymam ascendere,“Are you willing to ascend to Jerusalemet ibi de his judicari apud me?and to be judged there about these things before me?”
Dixit autem Paulus:But Paul said:Ad tribunal Cæsaris sto:“I stand in Caesar’s tribunal, ibi me oportet judicari:which is where I ought to be judged.Judæis non nocui,I have done no harm to the Jews, sicut tu melius nosti.as you well know.
Si enim nocui,For if I have harmed them, aut dignum morte aliquid feci,or if I have done anything deserving of death, non recuso mori:I do not object to dying.si vero nihil est eorum quæ hi accusant me,But if there is nothing to these things about which they accuse me,nemo potest me illis donare.no one is able to deliver me to them.Cæsarem appello.I appeal to Caesar.”
Tunc Festus cum concilio locutus,Then Festus, having spoken with the council, respondit: Cæsarem appellasti?responded: “You have appealed to Caesar,ad Cæsarem ibis.to Caesar you shall go.”
Et cum dies aliquot transacti essent,And when some days had passed,Agrippa rexking Agrippa and Bernice descended to Caesarea,et Bernice descenderunt Cæsaream ad salutandum Festum.to greet Festus.
Et cum dies plures ibi demorarentur,And since they remained there for many days,Festus regi indicavit de Paulo,Festus spoke to the king about Paul, dicens:saying:Vir quidam est derelictus a Felice vinctus,“A certain man was left behind as a prisoner by Felix.
de quo cum essem Jerosolymis,When I was at Jerusalem, adierunt me principes sacerdotum et seniores Judæorum, the leaders of the priests and the elders of the Jews came to me about him, postulantes adversus illum damnationem.asking for condemnation against him.
Ad quos respondi:I answered them that it is not the custom of the Romans to condemn any man,Quia non est Romanis consuetudo damnare aliquem hominem priusquam is qui accusatur præsentes habeat accusatores, before he who is being accused has been confronted by his accusers and has received the opportunity to defend himself, locumque defendendi accipiat ad abluenda crimina.so as to clear himself of the charges.
Cum ergo huc convenissent sine ulla dilatione,Therefore, when they had arrived here, without any delay, sequenti die sedens pro tribunali,on the following day, sitting in the judgment seat, jussi adduci virum.I ordered the man to be brought.
De quo, cum stetissent accusatores,But when the accusers had stood up,nullam causam deferebant, de quibus ego suspicabar malum.they did not present any accusation about him from which I would suspect evil.
Quæstiones vero quasdam de sua superstitione habebant adversus eum, et de quodam Jesu defuncto,Instead, they brought against him certain disputes about their own superstition and about a certain Jesus, quem affirmabat Paulus vivere.who had died, but whom Paul asserted to be alive.
Hæsitans autem ego de hujusmodi quæstione,Therefore, dicebam si vellet ire Jerosolymam, being in doubt about this kind of question,et ibi judicari de istis.I asked him if he was willing go to Jerusalem and to be judged there about these things.
Paulo autem appellante ut servaretur ad Augusti cognitionem,But since Paul was appealing to be kept for a decision before Augustus, jussi servari eum,I ordered him to be kept, donec mittam eum ad Cæsarem.until I might send him to Caesar.”
Agrippa autem dixit ad Festum:Then Agrippa said to Festus:Volebam et ipse hominem audire.“I myself also want to hear the man.”Cras,“Tomorrow,”inquit,he said, audies eum.“you shall hear him.”
Altera autem die cum venisset Agrippa et Bernice cum multa ambitione,And on the next day,et introissent in auditorium cum tribunis et viris principalibus civitatis, when Agrippa and Bernice had arrived with great ostentation and had entered into the auditorium with the tribunes and the principal men of the city, jubente Festo,Paul was brought in,adductus est Paulus.at the order of Festus.
Et dicit Festus:And Festus said:Agrippa rex,“King Agrippa,et omnes qui simul adestis nobiscum viri, and all who are present together with us,videtis hunc de quo omnis multitudo Judæorum interpellavit me Jerosolymis, you see this man, petentesabout whom all the multitude of the Jews disturbed me at Jerusalem,et acclamantes non oportere eum vivere amplius.petitioning and clamoring that he should not be allowed to live any longer.
Ego vere comperi nihil dignum morte eum admisisse.Truly, I have discovered nothing brought forth against him that is worthy of death.Ipso autem hoc appellante ad Augustum,But since he himself has appealed to Augustus, judicavi mittere.it was my judgment to send him.
De quo quid certum scribam domino, non habeo. But I have not determined what to write to the emperor about him.Propter quod produxi eum ad vos,Because of this, I have brought him before you all,et maxime ad te,and especially before you,rex Agrippa,O king Agrippa,ut interrogatione facta habeam quid scribam.so that, once an inquiry has occurred, I may have something to write.
Sine ratione enim mihi videtur mittere vinctum,For it seems to me unreasonable to send a prisoneret causas ejus non significare.and not to indicate the accusations set against him.”
