Paulus vocatus Apostolus Jesu Christi per voluntatem Dei,Paul, called as an Apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God;et Sosthenes frater, and Sosthenes, a brother:
ecclesiæ Dei, quæ est Corinthi,to the Church of God which is at Corinth, sanctificatis in Christo Jesu,to those sanctified in Christ Jesus, vocatis sanctis, cum omnibus qui invocant nomen Domini nostri Jesu Christi, in omni loco ipsorum et nostro.called to be saints with all who are invoking the name of our Lord Jesus Christ in every place of theirs and of ours.
Gratia vobis,Graceet pax a Deo Patre nostro, and peace to you from God our Fatheret Domino Jesu Christo.and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
Gratias ago Deo meo semper pro vobis in gratia Dei, quæ data est vobis in Christo Jesu:I give thanks to my God continuously for you because of the grace of God that has been given to you in Christ Jesus.
quod in omnibus divites facti estis in illo,By that grace, in all things, you have become wealthy in him,in omni verbo, et in omni scientia.in every word and in all knowledge.
Sicut testimonium Christi confirmatum est in vobis:And so, the testimony of Christ has been strengthened in you.
ita ut nihil vobis desit in ulla gratia,In this way, nothing is lacking to you in any grace, exspectantibus revelationem Domini nostri Jesu Christi,as you await the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ.
qui et confirmabit vos usque in finem sine crimine, in die adventus Domini nostri Jesu Christi. And he, too, will strengthen you, even until the end, without guilt, until the day of the advent of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Fidelis Deus:God is faithful.per quem vocati estis in societatem filii ejus Jesu Christi Domini nostri.Through him, you have been called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
Obsecro autem vos fratres per nomen Domini nostri Jesu Christi:And so, I beg you, brothers,ut idipsum dicatis omnes,by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,et non sint in vobis schismata:that every one of you speak in the same way, sitis autem perfecti in eodem sensu, and that there be no schisms among you. So may you become perfect,et in eadem sententia.with the same mind and with the same judgment.
Significatum est enim mihi de vobis fratres mei ab iis,For it has been indicated to me, about you, my brothers, qui sunt Chloës,by those who are with Chloes, quia contentiones sunt inter vos.that there are contentions among you.
Hoc autem dico, quod unusquisque vestrum dicit:Now I say this because each of you is saying:Ego quidem sum Pauli:“Certainly, I am of Paul;”ego autem Apollo:“But I am of Apollo;”ego vero Cephæ:“Truly, I am of Cephas;”ego autem Christi.as well as: “I am of Christ.”
Divisus est Christus?Has Christ been divided?numquid Paulus crucifixus est pro vobis? Was Paul crucified for you?aut in nomine Pauli baptizati estis?Or were you baptized in the name of Paul?
Gratias ago Deo,I give thanks to God that I have baptized none of you, quod neminem vestrum baptizavi, except Crispusnisi Crispum et Caium:and Gaius,
ne quis dicat quod in nomine meo baptizati estis.lest anyone say that you have been baptized in my name.
Baptizavi autemAnd I also baptized the household of Stephanus.et Stephanæ domum:Other than these, ceterum nescio si quem alium baptizaverim.I do not recall if I baptized any others.
Non enim misit me Christus baptizare,For Christ did not send me to baptize, sed evangelizare:but to evangelize:non in sapientia verbi, not through the wisdom of words,ut non evacuetur crux Christi.lest the cross of Christ become empty.
Verbum enim crucis pereuntibus quidem stultitia est:For the Word of the Cross is certainly foolishness to those who are perishing.iis autem qui salvi fiunt,But to those who have been saved,id est nobis, that is, to us,Dei virtus est.it is the power of God.
Scriptum est enim:For it has been written:Perdam sapientiam sapientium,“I will perish the wisdom of the wise,et prudentiam prudentium reprobabo.and I will reject the discernment of the prudent.”
Ubi sapiens?Where are the wise?ubi scriba?Where are the scribes?ubi conquisitor hujus sæculi?Where are the truth-seekers of this age?Nonne stultam fecit Deus sapientiam hujus mundi?Has not God made the wisdom of this world into foolishness?
Nam quia in Dei sapientia non cognovit mundus per sapientiam Deum:For the world did not know God through wisdom, and so, in the wisdom of God,placuit Deo per stultitiam prædicationis salvos facere credentes.it pleased God to accomplish the salvation of believers, through the foolishness of our preaching.
Quoniam et Judæi signa petunt,For the Jews ask for signs,et Græci sapientiam quærunt:and the Greeks seek wisdom.
nos autem prædicamus Christum crucifixum:But we are preaching Christ crucified. Certainly,Judæis quidem scandalum,to the Jews, this is a scandal, gentibus autem stultitiam, and to the Gentiles, this is foolishness.
ipsis autem vocatis Judæis,But to those who have been called, atque Græcis Christum Dei virtutem,Jews as well as Greeks,et Dei sapientiam:the Christ is the virtue of God and the wisdom of God.
quia quod stultum est Dei, sapientius est hominibus:For what is foolishness to God is considered wise by men,et quod infirmum est Dei, fortius est hominibus.and that which is weakness to God is considered strong by men.
Videte enim vocationem vestram,So take care of your vocation, fratres, brothers.quia non multi sapientes secundum carnem,For not many are wise according to the flesh, non multi potentes, not many are powerful, non multi nobiles:not many are noble.
sed quæ stulta sunt mundi elegit Deus,But God has chosen the foolish of the world,ut confundat sapientes:so that he may confound the wise.et infirma mundi elegit Deus,And God has chosen the weak of the world,ut confundat fortia:so that he may confound the strong.
et ignobilia mundi,And God has chosen the ignobleet contemptibilia elegit Deus, and contemptible of the world,et ea quæ non sunt, those who are nothing,ut ea quæ sunt destrueret:so that he may reduce to nothing those who are something.
ut non glorietur omnis caro in conspectu ejus.So then, nothing that is of the flesh should glory in his sight.
Ex ipso autem vos estis in Christo Jesu,But you are of him in Christ Jesus, qui factus est nobis sapientia a Deo,who was made by God to be our wisdomet justitia, and justiceet sanctificatio, and sanctificationet redemptio:and redemption.
ut quemadmodum scriptum est:And so, in the same way, it was written:Qui gloriatur,“Whoever glories,in Domino glorietur.should glory in the Lord.”
