Et vos,And you were once dead in your sinscum essetis mortui delictis et peccatis vestris, and offenses,
in quibus aliquando ambulastis secundum sæculum mundi hujus,in which you walked in times past, secundum principem potestatis aëris hujus, according to the age of this world, spiritus, according to the prince of the power of this sky,qui nunc operatur in filios diffidentiæ,the spirit who now works in the sons of distrust.
in quibus et nos omnes aliquando conversati sumus in desideriis carnis nostræ,And we too were all conversant in these things, in times past, by the desires of our flesh, facientes voluntatem carnis et cogitationum, acting according to the will of the flesh and according to our own thoughts.et eramus natura filii iræ,And so we were, by nature, sons of wrath, sicut et ceteri:even like the others.
Deus autem,Yet still, qui dives est in misericordia,God,propter nimiam caritatem suam, who is rich in mercy, qua dilexit nos,for the sake of his exceedingly great charity with which he loved us,
et cum essemus mortui peccatis, even when we were dead in our sins, convivificavit nos in Christo (cujus gratia estis salvati),has enlivened us together in Christ, by whose grace you have been saved.
et conresuscitavit,And he has raised us up together,et consedere fecit in cælestibus in Christo Jesu:and he has caused us to sit down together in the heavens, in Christ Jesus,
ut ostenderet in sæculis supervenientibus abundantes divitias gratiæ suæ,so that he may display, in the ages soon to arrive, the abundant wealth of his grace,in bonitate super nos in Christo Jesu.by his goodness toward us in Christ Jesus.
Gratia enim estis salvati per fidem,For by grace, you have been saved through faith.et hoc non ex vobis:And this is not of yourselves,Dei enim donum est:for it is a gift of God.
non ex operibus,And this is not of works,ut ne quis glorietur.so that no one may glory.
Ipsius enim sumus factura,For we are his handiwork, creati in Christo Jesu in operibus bonis, created in Christ Jesus for the good works which God has preparedquæ præparavit Deus ut in illis ambulemus.and in which we should walk.
Propter quod memores estote quod aliquando vos gentes in carne, qui dicimini præputium ab ea quæ dicitur circumcisio in carne, manu facta:Because of this, be mindful that, in times past, you were Gentiles in the flesh, and that you were called uncircumcised by those who are called circumcised in the flesh, something done by man,
quia eratis illo in tempore sine Christo, and that you were, in that time, without Christ, alienati a conversatione Israël,being foreign to the way of life of Israel,et hospites testamentorum, being visitors to the testament, promissionis spem non habentes, et sine Deo in hoc mundo.having no hope of the promise, and being without God in this world.
Nunc autem in Christo Jesu,But now, in Christ Jesus, vos, you, qui aliquando eratis longe, who were in times past far away, facti estis prope in sanguine Christi.have been brought near by the blood of Christ.
Ipse enim est pax nostra,For he is our peace.qui fecit utraque unum,He made the two into one,et medium parietem maceriæ solvens,by dissolving the intermediate wall of separation, inimicitias in carne sua,of opposition, by his flesh,
legem mandatorum decretis evacuans, emptying the law of commandments by decree,ut duos condat in semetipso in unum novum hominem,so that he might join these two, in himself, into one new man, faciens pacem:making peace
et reconciliet ambos in uno corpore, and reconciling both to God, in one body,Deo per crucem, through the cross, interficiens inimicitias in semetipso.destroying this opposition in himself.
Et veniens evangelizavit pacem vobis, qui longe fuistis,And upon arriving, he evangelized peace to you who were far away,et pacem iis, qui prope.and peace to those who were near.
Quoniam per ipsum habemus accessum ambo in uno Spiritu ad Patrem. For by him, we both have access, in the one Spirit, to the Father.
Ergo jam non estis hospites,Now, therefore, you are no longer visitors and new arrivals.et advenæ:Instead, sed estis cives sanctorum, et domestici Dei,you are citizens among the saints in the household of God,
superædificati super fundamentum apostolorum, having been built upon the foundation of the Apostleset prophetarum, and of the Prophets, ipso summo angulari lapide Christo Jesu:with Jesus Christ himself as the preeminent cornerstone.
in quo omnis ædificatio constructa crescit in templum sanctum in Domino,In him, all that has been built is framed together, rising up into a holy temple in the Lord.
in quoIn him,et vos coædificamini in habitaculum Dei in Spiritu.you also have been built together into a habitation of God in the Spirit.
