Obsecro itaque vos ego vinctus in Domino,And so,ut digne ambuletis vocatione,as a prisoner in the Lord, qua vocati estis,I beg you to walk in a manner worthy of the vocation to which you have been called:
cum omni humilitate, with all humilityet mansuetudine, and meekness, cum patientia, with patience, supportantes invicem in caritate, supporting one another in charity.
solliciti servare unitatem Spiritus in vinculo pacis.Be anxious to preserve the unity of the Spirit within the bonds of peace.
Unum corpus,One bodyet unus Spiritus, and one Spirit:sicut vocati estis in una spe vocationis vestræ.to this you have been called by the one hope of your calling:
Unus Dominus,one Lord,una fides,one faith,unum baptisma.one baptism,
Unus Deus et Pater omnium, one God and Father of all,qui est super omnes, who is over all,et per omnia, and through all,et in omnibus nobis.and in us all.
Unicuique autem nostrum data est gratia secundum mensuram donationis Christi.Yet to each one of us there has been given grace according to the measure allotted by Christ.
Propter quod dicit:Because of this, he says:Ascendens in altum,“Ascending on high, captivam duxit captivitatem:he took captivity itself captive;dedit dona hominibus.he gave gifts to men.”
Quod autem ascendit,Now that he has ascended, quid est, what is left except for him also to descend, nisi quia et descendit primum in inferiores partes terræ?first to the lower parts of the earth?
Qui descendit, ipse est et qui ascendit super omnes cælos,He who descended is the same one who also ascended above all the heavens,ut impleret omnia.so that he might fulfill everything.
Et ipse dedit quosdam quidem apostolos,And the same one granted that some would be Apostles, quosdam autem prophetas, and some Prophets, alios vero evangelistas, yet truly others evangelists, alios autem pastores et doctores, and others pastors and teachers,
ad consummationem sanctorum in opus ministerii, for the sake of the perfection of the saints, by the work of the ministry,in ædificationem corporis Christi:in the edification of the body of Christ,
donec occurramus omnes in unitatem fidei, until we all meet in the unity of faithet agnitionis Filii Dei,and in the knowledge of the Son of God,in virum perfectum,as a perfect man,in mensuram ætatis plenitudinis Christi:in the measure of the age of the fullness of Christ.
ut jam non simus parvuli fluctuantes,So may we then no longer be little children,et circumferamur omni vento doctrinæ in nequitia hominum, disturbed and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the wickedness of men,in astutia ad circumventionem erroris.and by the craftiness which deceives unto error.
Veritatem autem facientes in caritate,Instead, acting according to truth in charity, crescamus in illo per omnia,we should increase in everything, qui est caput Christus:in him who is the head, Christ himself.
ex quo totum corpus compactum et connexum per omnem juncturam subministrationis,For in him, the whole body is joined closely together, by every underlying joint, secundum operationem in mensuram uniuscujusque membri, through the function allotted to each part, augmentum corporis facit in ædificationem sui in caritate.bringing improvement to the body, toward its edification in charity.
Hoc igitur dico,And so, I say this,et testificor in Domino, and I testify in the Lord:ut jam non ambuletis, that from now on you should walk, sicut et gentes ambulant in vanitate sensus sui,not as the Gentiles also walk, in the vanity of their mind,
tenebris obscuratum habentes intellectum, having their intellect obscured, alienati a vita Dei per ignorantiam, being alienated from the life of God,quæ est in illis, through the ignorance that is within them, propter cæcitatem cordis ipsorum, because of the blindness of their hearts.
qui desperantes,Such as these, despairing, semetipsos tradiderunt impudicitiæ,have given themselves over to sexual immorality,in operationem immunditiæ omnis in avaritiam.carrying out every impurity with rapacity.
Vos autem non ita didicistis Christum,But this is not what you have learned in Christ.
si tamen illum audistis,For certainly, you have listened to him,et in ipso edocti estis, and you have been instructed in him, sicut est veritas in Jesu, according to the truth that is in Jesus:
deponere vos secundum pristinam conversationem veterem hominem,to set aside your earlier behavior, the former man,qui corrumpitur secundum desideria erroris.who was corrupted, by means of desire, unto error,
Renovamini autem spiritu mentis vestræ,and so be renewed in the spirit of your mind,
et induite novum hominem, and so put on the new man, who,qui secundum Deum creatus est in justitia, et sanctitate veritatis.in accord with God, is created in justice and in the holiness of truth.
Propter quod deponentes mendacium,Because of this, setting aside lying, loquimini veritatem unusquisque cum proximo suo:speak the truth, each one with his neighbor.quoniam sumus invicem membra. For we are all part of one another.
Irascimini,“Be angry,et nolite peccare:but do not be willing to sin.”sol non occidat super iracundiam vestram.Do not let the sun set over your anger.
Nolite locum dare diabolo:Provide no place for the devil.
qui furabatur,Whoever was stealing, jam non furetur:let him now not steal, magis autem laboret, but rather let him labor, operando manibus suis, working with his hands, quod bonum est, doing what is good,ut habeat unde tribuat necessitatem patienti.so that he may have something to distribute to those who suffer need.
Omnis sermo malus ex ore vestro non procedat:Let no evil words proceed from your mouth, but only what is good, sed si quis bonus ad ædificationem fidei ut det gratiam audientibus.toward the edification of faith, so as to bestow grace upon those who listen.
Et nolite contristare Spiritum Sanctum Dei:And do not be willing to grieve the Holy Spirit of God,in quo signati estis in diem redemptionis.in whom you have been sealed, unto the day of redemption.
Omnis amaritudo, et ira, et indignatio, et clamor, et blasphemia tollatur a vobis cum omni malitia.Let all bitterness and anger and indignation and outcry and blasphemy be taken away from you, along with all malice.
Estote autem invicem benigni,And be kind and merciful to one another, misericordes, forgiving one another, donantes invicem sicut et Deus in Christo donavit vobis.just as God has forgiven you in Christ.
