Paulus vinctus Christi Jesu,Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus,et Timotheus frater, and Timothy, a brother,Philemoni dilecto, et adjutori nostro,to Philemon, our beloved fellow laborer,
et Appiæ sorori carissimæ,and to Apphia, most beloved sister,et Archippo commilitoni nostro, and to Archippus, our fellow soldier,et ecclesiæ, quæ in domo tua est.and to the church which is in your house.
Gratia vobis,Grace and peace to you,et pax a Deo Patre nostro, et Domino Jesu Christo.from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
Gratias ago Deo meo,I give thanks to my God,semper memoriam tui faciens in orationibus meis, always keeping remembrance of you in my prayers,
audiens caritatem tuam,(for I am hearing of your charityet fidem, and faith, quam habes in Domino Jesu, which you have in the Lord Jesuset in omnes sanctos:and with all the saints)
ut communicatio fidei tuæ evidens fiat in agnitione omnis operis boni, quod est in vobis in Christo Jesu.so that the participation of your faith may become evident by the recognition of every good work which is in you in Christ Jesus.
Gaudium enim magnum habui,For I have found great joyet consolationem in caritate tua:and consolation in your charity, quia viscera sanctorum requieverunt per te,because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed by you,frater.brother.
Propter quod multam fiduciam habens in Christo Jesu imperandi tibi quod ad rem pertinet:Because of this, I have enough confidence in Christ Jesus to command you concerning certain things,
propter caritatem magis obsecro, but I beg you instead, cum sis talis, for the sake of charity,ut Paulus senex, since you are so much like Paul:nunc autem et vinctus Jesu Christi:an old man and now also a prisoner of Jesus Christ.
obsecro te pro meo filio,I beg you, on behalf of my son, quem genui in vinculis, whom I have begotten in my chains,Onesimo,Onesimus.
qui tibi aliquando inutilis fuit,In times past, he was useless to you, nunc autem et mihi et tibi utilis, but now he is useful both to me and to you.
quem remisi tibi.So I have sent him back to you.Tu autem illum, ut mea viscera, suscipe:And may you receive him like my own heart.
quem ego volueram mecum detinere,I myself wanted to retain him with me,ut pro te mihi ministraret in vinculis Evangelii:so that he might minister to me, on your behalf, while I am in the chains of the Gospel.
sine consilio autem tuo nihil volui facere,But I was willing to do nothing without your counsel, uti ne velut ex necessitate bonum tuum esset,so as not to make use of your good deed as if out of necessity, sed voluntarium.but only willingly.
Forsitan enim ideo discessit ad horam a te,So perhaps, then, he departed from you for a time,ut æternum illum reciperes:so that you might receive him again for eternity,
jam non ut servum,no longer as a servant, but,sed pro servo carissimum fratrem,in place of a servant, a most beloved brother, maxime mihi:especially to me:quanto autem magis tibi et in carne, et in Domino?but how much more to you, both in the flesh and in the Lord!
Si ergo habes me socium,Therefore, if you hold me to be a companion, suscipe illum sicut me:receive him as you would me.
si autem aliquid nocuit tibi,But if he has harmed you in any way,aut debet,or if he is in your debt, hoc mihi imputa.charge it to me.
Ego Paulus scripsi mea manu:I, Paul, have written this with my own hand:ego reddam,I will repay.ut non dicam tibi,And I need not tell you, quod et teipsum mihi debes:that you are also in debt yourself, to me.
ita,So it is,frater.brother.Ego te fruar in Domino:May I delight with you in the Lord!refice viscera mea in Domino.Refresh my heart in Christ.
Confidens in obedientia tua scripsi tibi:I have written to you, sciens quoniamtrusting in your obedience,et super id,knowing, quod dico, too, facies.that you will do even more than what I say.
Simul autem et para mihi hospitium:But also, at once, prepare a lodging for me.nam spero per orationes vestras donari me vobis. For I am hoping, through your prayers, to present myself to you.
Salutat te Epaphras concaptivus meus in Christo Jesu,Greet Epaphras, my fellow captive in Christ Jesus,
Marcus,and Mark,Aristarchus,Aristarchus,Demas,Demas,et Lucas,and Luke,adjutores mei.my helpers.
Gratia Domini nostri Jesu Christi cum spiritu vestro.May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.Amen.Amen.
