De temporibus autem,But concerning dateset momentis, and times, fratres, brothers, non indigetis ut scribamus vobis.you do not need us to write to you.
Ipsi enim diligenter scitis quia dies Domini, sicut fur in nocte, ita veniet:For you yourselves thoroughly understand that the day of the Lord shall arrive much like a thief in the night.
cum enim dixerint:For when they will say,Pax et securitas:“Peace and security!”tunc repentinus eis superveniet interitus, then destruction will suddenly overwhelm them, sicut dolor in utero habenti, like the labor pains of a woman with child,et non effugient.and they will not escape.
Vos autem,But you, fratres, brothers, non estis in tenebris, are not in darkness,ut vos dies illa tamquam fur comprehendat:so that you would be overtaken by that day as by a thief.
omnes enim vos filii lucis estis,For all of you are sons of lightet filii diei:and sons of daytime;non sumus noctis,we are not of nighttime, neque tenebrarum.nor of darkness.
Igitur non dormiamus sicut et ceteri,Therefore, let us not sleep, as the rest do.sed vigilemus, et sobrii simus.Instead, we should be vigilant and sober.
Qui enim dormiunt,For those who sleep, nocte dormiunt:sleep in the night;et qui ebrii sunt, and those who are inebriated, nocte ebrii sunt.are inebriated in the night.
Nos autem,But we,qui diei sumus, who are of the daylight, sobrii simus, should be sober, induti loricam fideibeing clothed with the breastplate of faith and of charity and having,et caritatis,as a helmet,et galeam spem salutis:the hope of salvation.
quoniam non posuit nos Deus in iram,For God has not appointed us for wrath, sed in acquisitionem salutis per Dominum nostrum Jesum Christum, but for the acquisition of salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,
qui mortuus est pro nobis:who died for us, so that,ut sive vigilemus, whether we watch, sive dormiamus,or whether we sleep, simul cum illo vivamus.we may live in union with him.
Propter quod consolamini invicem,Because of this,et ædificate alterutrum, console one another and build up one another, sicut et facitis.just as you are doing.
Rogamus autem vos,And we ask you, fratres, brothers,ut noveritis eos qui laborant inter vos,to recognize those who labor among you,et præsunt vobis in Domino, and who preside over you in the Lord,et monent vos,and who admonish you,
ut habeatis illos abundantius in caritate propter opus illorum:so that you may consider them with an abundance of charity, for the sake of their work.pacem habete cum eis.Be at peace with them.
Rogamus autem vos,And we ask you,fratres,brothers:corripite inquietos,correct the disruptive,consolamini pusillanimes,console the weak-minded,suscipite infirmos,support the sick,patientes estote ad omnes.be patient with everyone.
Videte ne quis malum pro malo alicui reddat:See to it that no one repays evil for evil to anyone. Instead, sed semper quod bonum est sectamini in invicem, et in omnes.always pursue whatever is good, with one another and with all.
Semper gaudete.Rejoice always.
Sine intermissione orate.Pray without ceasing.
In omnibus gratias agite:Give thanks in everything.hæc est enim voluntas Dei in Christo Jesu in omnibus vobis. For this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for all of you.
Spiritum nolite extinguere.Do not choose to extinguish the Spirit.
Prophetias nolite spernere.Do not spurn prophecies.
Omnia autem probate:But test all things.quod bonum est tenete.Hold on to whatever is good.
Ab omni specie mala abstinete vos.Abstain from every kind of evil.
Ipse autem Deus pacis sanctificet vos per omnia:And may the God of peace himself sanctify you through all things,ut integer spiritus vester,so that your whole spiritet anima, and soulet corpus sine querela in adventu Domini nostri Jesu Christi servetur.and body may be preserved without blame unto the return of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Fidelis est, qui vocavit vos:He who has called you is faithful.qui etiam faciet. He shall act even now.
Fratres,Brothers,orate pro nobis.pray for us.
Salutate fratres omnes in osculo sancto.Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss.
Adjuro vos per Dominum ut legatur epistola hæc omnibus sanctis fratribus.I bind you, through the Lord, that this epistle is to be read to all the holy brothers.
Gratia Domini nostri Jesu Christi vobiscum.May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.Amen.Amen.
