Quis mihi det te fratrem meum,Bride to Groom: Who will give you to me as my brother, sugentem ubera matris meæ,feeding from the breasts of my mother,ut inveniam te foris,so that I may discover you outside,et deosculer te,and may kiss you,et jam me nemo despiciat?and so that now no one may despise me?

Apprehendam te,I will take hold of youet ducam in domum matris meæ:and lead you into my mother’s house.ibi me docebis,There you will teach me,et dabo tibi poculum ex vino condito, and I will give you a cup of spiced wine,et mustum malorum granatorum meorum.and of new wine from my pomegranates.

Læva ejus sub capite meo,His left hand is under my head,et dextera illius amplexabitur me.and his right hand shall embrace me.

Adjuro vos,Groom to Chorus:filiæ Jerusalem,I bind you by oath,ne suscitetis,O daughters of Jerusalem, neque evigilare faciatis dilectam, not to disturb or awaken the beloved, donec ipsa velit.until she wills.

Quæ est ista quæ ascendit de deserto,Chorus to Groom: Who is she, deliciis affluens, innixa super dilectum suum?who ascends from the desert,Sub arbore malo suscitavi te;flowing with delights, ibi corrupta est mater tua, ibi violata est genitrix tua.leaning upon her beloved?

Pone me ut signaculum super cor tuum,Groom to Bride:ut signaculum super brachium tuum,Under the apple tree, quia fortis est ut mors dilectio,I awakened you.dura sicut infernus æmulatio:There your mother was corrupted.lampades ejus lampades ignis atque flammarum. There she who bore you was violated.

Aquæ multæ non potuerunt extinguere caritatem,Set me like a seal upon your heart, nec flumina obruent illam.like a seal upon your arm.Si dederit homo omnem substantiam domus suæ pro dilectione,For love is strong, like death, and envy is enduring, quasi nihil despiciet eam.like hell: their lamps are made of fire and flames.

Soror nostra parva, et ubera non habet;A multitude of waters cannot extinguish love, nor can a river overwhelm it.quid faciemus sorori nostræ in die quando alloquenda est?If a man were to give all the substance of his house in exchange for love, he would despise it as nothing.

Si murus est,Chorus:ædificemus super eum propugnacula argentea; Our sister is littlesi ostium est,and has no breasts.compingamus illud tabulis cedrinis. What shall we do for our sister on the day when she is called upon?

Ego murus,If she is a wall,et ubera mea sicut turris, let us build a rampart of silver upon it.ex quo facta sum coram eo,If she is a door, quasi pacem reperiens.let us join it together with boards of cedar.

Vinea fuit pacifico in ea quæ habet populos:Bride to Chorus: I am a wall, and my breasts are like towers, tradidit eam custodibus;since, in his presence, vir affert pro fructu ejus mille argenteos.I have become like one who has discovered peace.

Vinea mea coram me est.The peaceful one had a vineyard, in that which held the peoples.Mille tui pacifici,He handed it on to the caretakers;et ducenti his qui custodiunt fructus ejus.a man brought, in exchange for its fruit, a thousand pieces of silver.

Quæ habitas in hortis,Groom: My vineyard is before me.amici auscultant; The thousand is for your peacefulness, fac me audire vocem tuam.and two hundred is for those who care for its fruit.

Fuge,Bride to Groom:dilecte mi, et assimilare capreæ,Your friends are attentive to those who have been dwelling in the gardens. Cause me to heed your voice.hinnuloque cervorum super montes aromatum.Flee away, my beloved, and become like the doe and the young stag upon the mountains of aromatic plants.
