Ego autem ab anno primo Darii Medi stabam ut confortaretur et roboraretur.“And so, from the first year of Darius the Mede, I stood firm, so that he might be reinforced and strengthened.

Et nunc veritatem annuntiabo tibi. And now I will announce to you the truth. Behold,Ecce adhuc tres reges stabunt in Perside,up to a certain point, three kings will stand in Persia,et quartus ditabitur opibus nimiis super omnes:and the fourth will be exceedingly enriched in power above them all.et cum invaluerit divitiis suis,And when he has grown strong by his resources, concitabit omnes adversum regnum Græciæ.he will stir up all against the kingdom of Greece.

Surget vero rex fortis,But there will rise up a strong king,et dominabitur potestate multa, and he will rule with great power,et faciet quod placuerit ei.and he will do what he pleases.

Et cum steterit, conteretur regnum ejus,And when he has been firmly established,et dividetur in quatuor ventos cæli: sed non in posteros ejus, his kingdom will be shattered and will be divided towards the four winds of the heaven, neque secundum potentiam illius, qua dominatus est:but not to his posterity, nor according to his power with which he ruled.lacerabitur enim regnum ejus etiam in externos, exceptis his.For his kingdom will be torn to pieces, even for the outsiders who have been expelled from these.

Et confortabitur rex austri:And the king of the South will be reinforced,et de principibus ejus prævalebit super eum,yet one of his leaders will prevail over him,et dominabitur ditione:and he will rule with riches, multa enim dominatio ejus.for great is his domain.

Et post finem annorum fœderabuntur:And after the end of years, they will form a federation, filiaque regis austri veniet ad regem aquilonis facere amicitiam, and the daughter of the king of the South will come to the king of the North to make friendship,et non obtinebit fortitudinem brachii, nec stabit semen ejus:but she will not obtain the strength of arms, neither will her offspring stand firm,et tradetur ipsa, and she will be handed over,et qui adduxerunt eam adolescentes ejus, along with those who brought her, her young men,et qui confortabant eam in temporibus.and those who comforted her in these times.

Et stabit de germine radicum ejus plantatio:And a transplant from the germination of her roots will stand up,et veniet cum exercitu, and he will come with an army,et ingredietur provinciam regis aquilonis:and will enter into the province of the king of the North,et abutetur eis,and he will abuse them,et obtinebit.and will hold it fast.

Insuper et deos eorum,And, in addition,et sculptilia, vasa quoque pretiosa argenti et auri,he will carry away captive into Egypt their gods, and their graven images, captiva ducet in Ægyptum: ipse prævalebit adversus regem aquilonis.and likewise their precious vessels of gold and silver. He will prevail against the king of the North.

Et intrabit in regnum rex austri,And the king of the South will enter into the kingdom,et revertetur ad terram suam.and will return to his own land.

Filii autem ejus provocabuntur,But his sons will be challenged,et congregabunt multitudinem exercituum plurimorum:and they will assemble a multitude of very many forces.et veniet properans,And he will arrive rushinget inundans:and overflowing.et revertetur,And he will be turned back,et concitabitur, and he will be enraged,et congredietur cum robore ejus.and he will join the battle in his redness.

Et provocatus rex austri egredietur,And the king of the South, having being challenged,et pugnabit adversus regem aquilonis, will go forth and will fight against the king of the North,et præparabit multitudinem nimiam, and he will prepare an exceedingly great multitude,et dabitur multitudo in manu ejus.and a multitude will be given into his hand.

Et capiet multitudinem,And he will seize a multitude,et exaltabitur cor ejus, and his heart will be exalted,et dejiciet multa millia, and he will cast down many thousands, sed non prævalebit.but he will not prevail.

Convertetur enim rex aquilonis, et præparabit multitudinem multo majorem quam prius:For the king of the North will change strategy and will prepare a multitude much greater than before,et in fine temporum annorumque veniet properans cum exercitu magno, et opibus nimiis.and at the end of times and years, he will rush forward with a great army and exceedingly great resources.

Et in temporibus illis multi consurgent adversus regem austri:And in those times, many will rise up against the king of the South.filii quoque prævaricatorum populi tui extollentur ut impleant visionem,And likewise the sons of the deceivers among your people will extol themselves, so as to fulfill the vision,et corruent.and they will collapse.

Et venit rex aquilonis,And the king of the North will arriveet comportabit aggerem, and will transport siege works,et capiet urbes munitissimas:and he will seize the most fortified cities.et brachia austri non sustinebunt,And the arms of the South will not withstand him,et consurgent electi ejus ad resistendum, and his elect will rise up to resist,et non erit fortitudo.but the strength will not.

Et faciet veniens super eum juxta placitum suum,And when he arrives, he will do just as he pleases,et non erit qui stet contra faciem ejus:and there will be none who stand against his face.et stabit in terra inclyta,And he will stand in the illustrious land,et consumetur in manu ejus.and it will be consumed by his hand.

Et ponet faciem suam ut veniat ad tenendum universum regnum ejus,And he will set his face to strive to hold his entire kingdom,et recta faciet cum eo:and he will make fair conditions with him.et filiam feminarum dabit ei,And he will give him a daughter among women,ut evertat illud:so as to overthrow it.et non stabit,But she will not stand, nec illius erit.neither will she be for him.

Et convertet faciem suam ad insulas,And he will turn his face towards the islands,et capiet multas:and he will seize many.et cessare faciet principem opprobrii sui,And he will cause the leader of his reproach to cease,et opprobrium ejus convertetur in eum.and his reproach will be turned around for him.

Et convertet faciem suam ad imperium terræ suæ,And he will turn his face to the empire of his own land,et impinget, and he will strike,et corruet, and will overthrow,et non invenietur.but he will not succeed.

Et stabit in loco ejus vilissimus,And there will stand up in his place one who is most worthless and unworthy of kingly honor.et indignus decore regio:And in a short time,et in paucis diebus conteretur,he will be worn out,non in furore, but not in fury, nec in prælio.nor in battle.

Et stabit in loco ejus despectus,And there will stand up in his place the despicable one,et non tribuetur ei honor regius:and he will not be assigned the honor of a king.et veniet clam,And he will arrive in secret,et obtinebit regnum in fraudulentia.and he will obtain the kingdom by deceitfulness.

Et brachia pugnantis expugnabuntur a facie ejus,And the arms of the fighting will be assaulted before his face and will be shattered,et conterentur:and, insuperin addition,et dux fœderis.the leader of the federation.

Et post amicitias,And,cum eo faciet dolum:after making friends,et ascendet,he will trick him,et superabit in modico populo.and he will go up and will overcome with a small people.

Et abundantes,And he will enter into richet uberes urbes ingredietur:and resourceful cities,et faciet quæ non fecerunt patres ejus, and he will do what his fathers never did,et patres patrum ejus:nor his fathers’ fathers.rapinas,He will scatter their spoils,et prædam, and their prey,et divitias eorum dissipabit, and their riches,et contra firmissimas cogitationes inibit:and will form a plan against the most steadfast,et hoc usque ad tempus.and this until a time.

Et concitabitur fortitudo ejus,And his strengthet cor ejus adversum regem austri in exercitu magno:and his heart will be enraged against the king of the South with a great army.et rex austri provocabitur ad bellum multis auxiliis,And the king of the South will be provoked into going to war by having many allieset fortibus nimis:and exceedingly good circumstances,et non stabunt, and yet these will not stand, quia inibunt adversus eum consilia.for they will form plans against him.

Et comedentes panem cum eo,And those who eat bread with him will crush him, conterent illum, and his army will be suppressed, exercitusque ejus opprimetur:and very many will die,et cadent interfecti plurimi.having been executed.

Duorum quoque regum cor erit ut malefaciant,And the heart of two kings will be similar, to do harm,et ad mensam unam mendacium loquentur:and they will speak lies at one table,et non proficient, but they will not succeed, quia adhuc finis in aliud tempus.because as yet the end is for another time.

Et revertetur in terram suam cum opibus multis:And he will return to his land with many resources.et cor ejus adversum testamentum sanctum,And his heart will be against the holy testament,et faciet, and he will act,et revertetur in terram suam.and he will return to his own land.

Statuto tempore revertetur,At the appointed time, he will return,et veniet ad austrum:and he will approach the South,et non erit priori simile novissimum.but the latter time will not be like the former.

Et venient super eum trieres, et Romani:And the Greek warships and the Romans will come upon him,et percutietur, and he will be pierced,et revertetur, and will retreat,et indignabitur contra testamentum sanctuarii, and will have scorn against the testament of the sanctuary,et faciet:and he will act.reverteturque, et cogitabit adversum eos qui dereliquerunt testamentum sanctuarii. And he will return and will consult their adversaries, who have forsaken the covenant of the sanctuary.

Et brachia ex eo stabunt,And arms will take his side,et polluent sanctuarium fortitudinis, and they will pollute the sanctuary of the strength,et auferent juge sacrificium:and they will take away the continual sacrificeet dabunt abominationem in desolationem.and will replace it with the abomination of desolation.

Et impii in testamentum simulabunt fraudulenter:And the impious within the testament will imitate deceitfully, populus autem sciens Deum suum, but the people, obtinebit, knowing their God,et faciet.will persevere and will act.

Et docti in populo docebunt plurimos:And the teachers among the people will teach many,et ruent in gladio, but they will be ruined by the sword,et in flamma, and by fire,et in captivitate, and by captivity,et in rapina dierum.and by assaults for many days.

Cumque corruerint,And when they have fallen, sublevabuntur auxilio parvulo:they will be supported with a little help,et applicabuntur eis plurimi fraudulenter.but many will apply to them deceitfully.

Et de eruditis ruent, ut conflentur,And some of the learned will be ruined,et eligantur, et dealbentur usque ad tempus præfinitum:that they may be kindled and chosen and purified, up to the predetermined time, quia adhuc aliud tempus erit.because there will be still another time.

Et faciet juxta voluntatem suam rex,And the king will act according to his will,et elevabitur, and he will be lifted up and will be extolled against every god.et magnificabitur adversus omnem deum:And he will speak great things against the God of gods,et adversus Deum deorum loquetur magnifica, and he will control,et dirigetur, until the passion is completed.donec compleatur iracundia:Once accomplished, perpetrata quippe est definitio.the limit is reached with certainty.

Et Deum patrum suorum non reputabit:And he will give no thought to the God of his fathers,et erit in concupiscentiis feminarum, and he will be in the desire of women, nec quemquam deorum curabit, and he will not attend to any gods, quia adversum universa consurget.because he will rise up against all things.

Deum autem Maozim in loco suo venerabitur:But he will do homage to the god Maozim in his place,et deum, and, quem ignoraverunt patres ejus,a god whom his fathers did not know, colet auro,he will worship with gold,et argento, and silver,et lapide pretioso, and precious stones, rebusque pretiosis.and costly things.

Et faciet ut muniat Maozim cum deo alieno,And he will act to reinforce Maozim with an alien god, quem cognovit,of whom he has become aware,et multiplicabit gloriam, and he will increase their glory,et dabit eis potestatem in multis, and will give them power over many,et terram dividet gratuito.and he will distribute land for free.

Et in tempore præfinito præliabitur adversus eum rex austri,And, at the predetermined time, the king of the South will fight against him,et quasi tempestas veniet contra illum rex aquilonis in curribus, and the king of the North will come against him like a tempest, with chariots,et in equitibus, and with horsemen,et in classe magna, and with a great fleet,et ingredietur terras, and he will enter into the lands,et conteret, et pertransiet.and will crush and pass through.

Et introibit in terram gloriosam,And he will enter into the glorious land,et multæ corruent:and many will fall.hæ autem solæ salvabuntur de manu ejus,But only these will be saved from his hand:Edom,Edom,et Moab, and Moab,et principium filiorum Ammon.and the first part of the sons of Ammon.

Et mittet manum suam in terras:And he will cast his hand upon the lands,et terra Ægypti non effugiet.and the land of Egypt will not escape.

Et dominabitur thesaurorum auri,And he will rule over the treasure chests of gold,et argenti, and silver,et in omnibus pretiosis Ægypti:and all the precious things of Egypt, per Libyam quoque, and likewise he will pass through Libyaet Æthiopiam transibit.and Ethiopia.

Et fama turbabit eum ab oriente et ab aquilone:And rumors from the East and from the North will trouble him.et veniet in multitudine magna ut conterat et interficiat plurimos. And he will arrive with a great multitude to destroy and to execute many.

Et figet tabernaculum suum Apadno inter maria,And he will fasten his tabernacle, Apadno, between the seas, super montem inclytum et sanctum:upon an illustrious and holy mountain,et veniet usque ad summitatem ejus, and he will come even to its summit,et nemo auxiliabitur ei.and no one will help him.”
