Nabuchodonosor rex fecit statuam auream,King Nebuchadnezzar made a statue of gold, altitudine cubitorum sexaginta, sixty cubits high and six cubits wide, latitudine cubitorum sex, et statuit eam in campo Dura, provinciæ Babylonis.and he set it up in the plain of Dura in the province of Babylon.
Itaque Nabuchodonosor rex misit ad congregandos satrapas,Then king Nebuchadnezzar sent to gather together the governors, magistratus, et judices, magistrates and judges, duces, et tyrannos, et præfectos, generals and sovereigns and commanders, omnesque principes regionum, and all the leaders of the regions,ut convenirent ad dedicationem statuæ quam erexerat Nabuchodonosor rex.to come together for the dedication of the statue, which king Nebuchadnezzar had raised.
Tunc congregati sunt satrapæ,Then the governors, magistrates and judges, magistratus, et judices, duces, generals and sovereigns and nobles,et tyranni, et optimates, who were appointed to power, qui erant in potestatibus constituti, et universi principes regionum, ut convenirent ad dedicationem statuæ,and all the leaders of the regions were brought together so as to convene for the dedication of the statue, quam erexerat Nabuchodonosor rex.which king Nebuchadnezzar had raised.Stabant autem in conspectu statuæ, quam posuerat Nabuchodonosor rex:And so they stood before the statue that king Nebuchadnezzar had set up.
et præco clamabat valenter:And a herald proclaimed loudly,Vobis dicitur populis,“To you it is said, to you peoples, tribubus, tribes,et linguis:and languages,
in hora qua audieritis sonitum tubæ, et fistulæ, et citharæ,that in the hour when you will hear the sound of the trumpet and the pipe and the lute, sambucæ, et psalterii, the harp and the psaltery,et symphoniæ, et universi generis musicorum, and of the symphony and every kind of music, cadentes adorate statuam auream, you must fall down and adore the gold statue, quam constituit Nabuchodonosor rex.which king Nebuchadnezzar has set up.
Si quis autem non prostratus adoraverit,But if anyone will not bow down and adore, eadem hora mittetur in fornacem ignis ardentis.in the same hour he will be cast into a furnace of burning fire.”
Post hæc igitur,After this, therefore, statim ut audierunt omnes populi sonitum tubæ,as soon as all the people heard the sound of the trumpet, fistulæ, et citharæ,the pipe and the lute, sambucæ, et psalterii, the harp and the psaltery,et symphoniæ, et omnis generis musicorum, and of the symphony and every kind of music, cadentes omnes populi, all the peoples, tribes, tribus, et linguæ adoraverunt statuam auream, and languages fell down and adored the gold statue, quam constituerat Nabuchodonosor rex.which king Nebuchadnezzar had set up.
Statimque in ipso tempore accedentes viri Chaldæi accusaverunt Judæos:And soon, about the same time, some influential Chaldeans came and accused the Jews,
dixeruntque Nabuchodonosor regi:and they said to king Nebuchadnezzar,Rex,“O king,in æternum vive!live forever.
tu,You,rex,O king, posuisti decretum, have established a decree,ut omnis homo, qui audierit sonitum tubæ,so that every man who might hear the sound of the trumpet, fistulæ, et citharæ,the pipe and the lute, sambucæ, et psalterii, the harp and the psaltery,et symphoniæ, et universi generis musicorum, and of the symphony and every kind of music, prosternat se, et adoret statuam auream:will prostrate himself and adore the gold statue.
si quis autem non procidens adoraverit,But if any man will not fall down and adore, mittatur in fornacem ignis ardentis.he would be cast into a furnace of burning fire.
Sunt ergo viri Judæi,Yet there are influential Jews, quos constituisti super opera regionis Babylonis, whom you have appointed over the works of the region of Babylon,Sidrach,Shadrach,Misach,Meshach,et Abdenago:and Abednego.viri isti contempserunt,These men, O king, rex, decretum tuum:have scorned your decree.deos tuos non colunt,They do not worship your gods,et statuam auream, quam erexisti, non adorant.and they do not adore the gold statue which you have raised up.”
Tunc Nabuchodonosor,Then Nebuchadnezzar, in fury and in wrath,in furore et in ira, commanded that Shadrach,præcepit ut adducerentur Sidrach,Meshach, and Abednego should be brought,Misach, and so,et Abdenago:without delay, qui confestim adducti sunt in conspectu regis.they were brought before the king.
Pronuntiansque Nabuchodonosor rex,And king Nebuchadnezzar addressed themait eis:and said,Verene Sidrach,“Is it true,Misach,Shadrach,et Abdenago,Meshach, deos meos non colitis, and Abednego,et statuam auream, that you do not worship my gods, quam constitui, nor adore the gold statue, non adoratis?which I have set up?
nunc ergo si estis parati,Therefore, if you are prepared now, quacumque hora audieritis sonitum tubæ,whenever you hear the sound of the trumpet, fistulæ,pipe, lute, citharæ, sambucæ,harp and psaltery,et psalterii, et symphoniæ, omnisque generis musicorum, and of the symphony and every kind of music, prosternite vos, et adorate statuam, quam feci:prostrate yourselves and adore the statue which I have made.quod si non adoraveritis,But if you will not adore, eadem hora mittemini in fornacem ignis ardentis:in the same hour you will be cast into the furnace of burning fire.et quis est Deus, qui eripiet vos de manu mea?And who is the God that will rescue you from my hand?”
Respondentes Sidrach,Shadrach,Misach,Meshach,et Abdenago, and Abednego answereddixerunt regi Nabuchodonosor:and said to king Nebuchadnezzar,Non oportet nos de hac re respondere tibi.“It is not right for us to obey you in this matter.
Ecce enim Deus noster,For behold our God,quem colimus, whom we worship, potest eripere nos de camino ignis ardentis, et de manibus tuis, o rex,is able to rescue us from the oven of burning fire and to free us from your hands, liberare.O king.
Quod si noluerit,But even if he will not, notum sit tibi, let it be known to you, rex,O king, quia deos tuos non colimus, that we will not worship your gods,et statuam auream, nor adore the gold statue, quam erexisti, non adoramus.which you have raised up.”
Tunc Nabuchodonosor repletus est furore,Then Nebuchadnezzar was filled with furyet aspectus faciei illius immutatus est super Sidrach, and the appearance of his face was changed against Shadrach,Misach,Meshach,et Abdenago:and Abednego,et præcepit ut succenderetur fornax septuplum quam succendi consueverat.and he commanded that the furnace should be heated to seven times its usual fire.
Et viris fortissimis de exercitu suo jussit ut ligatis pedibus Sidrach,And he ordered the strongest men of his army to bind the feet of Shadrach,Misach,Meshach,et Abdenago, and Abednego, mitterent eos in fornacem ignis ardentis.and to cast them into the furnace of burning fire.
Et confestim viri illi vincti,And immediately these men were bound, cum braccis suis, and along with their coats,et tiaris, and their hats,et calceamentis, and their shoes,et vestibus, and their garments, missi sunt in medium fornacis ignis ardentis:were cast into the middle of the furnace of burning fire.
nam jussio regis urgebat. Fornax autem succensa erat nimis:But the king’s order was so urgent that the furnace was heated excessively.porro viros illos, qui miserant Sidrach,As a result, those men who had cast in Shadrach,Misach,Meshach,et Abdenago, and Abednego, interfecit flamma ignis.were killed by the flame of the fire.
Viri autem hi tres,But these three men,id est, that is,Sidrach,Shadrach,Misach,Meshach,et Abdenago, and Abednego, ceciderunt in medio camino ignis ardentis, having been bound, colligati.fell down in the middle of the oven of burning fire.
Et ambulabant in medio flammæ,And they were walking in the midst of the flame, laudantes Deum, praising Godet benedicentes Domino.and blessing the Lord.
Stans autem Azarias oravit sic,Then Azariah, while standing, prayed in this manner, aperiensque os suum in medio ignis, and opening his mouth in the midst of the fire, ait:he said:
Benedictus es,“Blessed are you,Domine Deus patrum nostrorum,O Lord,et laudabile, the God of our fathers,et gloriosum nomen tuum in sæcula:and your name is praiseworthy and glorious for all ages.
quia justus es in omnibus, quæ fecisti nobis,For you are just in all the things that you have accomplished for us,et universa opera tua vera, and all your works are true,et viæ tuæ rectæ,and your ways are right,et omnia judicia tua vera.and all your judgments are true.
Judicia enim vera fecisti juxta omnia,For you have made equally true judgments in all the things that you have brought upon us and upon Jerusalem,quæ induxisti super nos,the holy city of our fathers.et super civitatem sanctam patrum nostrorum Jerusalem:For in truth and in judgment, quia in veritate et in judicio induxisti omnia hæc propter peccata nostra.you have brought down all these things because of our sins.
Peccavimus enim,For we have sinned,et inique egimus recedentes a te,and we have committed iniquity in withdrawing from you,et deliquimus in omnibus:and we have offended in all things.
et præcepta tua non audivimus,And we have not listened to your precepts, nec observavimus, nor have we observed or done as you have ordered us,nec fecimus sicut præceperas nobis ut bene nobis esset.so that it might go well with us.
Omnia ergo,Therefore,quæ induxisti super nos, everything that you have brought upon us,et universa quæ fecisti nobis, and all that you have done for us,in vero judicio fecisti;you have done in true judgment.
et tradidisti nos in manibus inimicorum nostrorum iniquorum,And you have delivered us into the hands of our enemies: traitors,et pessimorum, prævaricatorumque, unjust and most wicked, and to a king,et regi injusto, unjust and most wicked,et pessimo ultra omnem terram.even more so than all others on earth.
Et nunc non possumus aperire os:And now we are not able to open our mouths.confusio,We have become a shameet opprobrium facti sumus servis tuis, and a disgrace to your servantset his qui colunt te.and to those who worship you.
Ne,Do not hand us over forever,quæsumus,we ask you, tradas nos in perpetuum propter nomen tuum, because of your name,et ne dissipes testamentum tuum:and do not abolish your covenant.
neque auferas misericordiam tuam a nobis,And do not withdraw your mercy from us,propter Abraham,because of Abraham,dilectum tuum,your beloved,et Isaac,and Isaac,servum tuum,your servant,et Israël,and Israel,sanctum tuum,your holy one.
quibus locutus es pollicens quod multiplicares semen eorum sicut stellas cæli,You have spoken with them,et sicut arenam quæ est in littore maris;promising that you would multiply their offspring like the stars of heaven and like the sand on the seashore.
quia,For we,Domine,O Lord, imminuti sumus plus quam omnes gentes, are diminished more than all other peoples, sumusque humiles in universa terra hodie propter peccata nostra.and we are brought low throughout all the earth, this day, because of our sins.
Et non est in tempore hoc princeps,Neither is there, at this time,et dux,a leader,et propheta,or a ruler,neque holocaustum,or a prophet,neque sacrificium,nor any holocaust,neque oblatio,or sacrifice,neque incensum,or oblation, or incense,neque locus primitiarum coram te,or place of first fruits, in your eyes,
ut possimus invenire misericordiam tuam,so that we may be able to find your mercy. Nevertheless, sed in animo contrito, et spiritu humilitatis suscipiamur.with a contrite soul and humble spirit, let us be accepted.
Sicut in holocausto arietum,Just as in the holocausts of ramset taurorum, and bullocks,et sicut in millibus agnorum pinguium, and as in thousands of fat lambs, sic fiat sacrificium nostrum in conspectu tuo hodie,so let our sacrifice be in your sight this day,ut placeat tibi,in order to please you.quoniam non est confusio confidentibus in te.For there is no shame for those who trust in you.
Et nunc sequimur te in toto corde; And now we follow you wholeheartedly,et timemus te,and we fear you,et quærimus faciem tuam.and we seek your face.
Nec confundas nos,Do not put us to shame, sed fac nobiscum juxta mansuetudinem tuam, but deal with us in agreement with your clemencyet secundum multitudinem misericordiæ tuæ.and according to the multitude of your mercies.
Et erue nos in mirabilibus tuis,And rescue us by your wonderset da gloriam nomini tuo,and give glory to your name,Domine;O Lord.
et confundantur omnes qui ostendunt servis tuis mala:And let all those be confounded who lead your servants towards evil.confundantur in omni potentia tua,May they be confounded by all your poweret robur eorum conteratur:and may their strength be crushed.
et sciant quia tu es Dominus Deus solus,And may they know that you are the Lord,et gloriosus super orbem terrarum.the only God, and glorious above the world.”
Et non cessabant qui miserant eos ministri regis succendere fornacem,And they did not cease, those attendants of the king who had cast them in,naphtha, et stuppa,to heat the furnace with oil,et pice, and flax,et malleolis, and pitch, and brush.
et effundebatur flamma super fornacem cubitis quadraginta novem:And the flame streamed forth above the furnace for forty-nine cubits.
et erupit,And the fire eruptedet incendit quos reperit juxta fornacem de Chaldæis.and burnt those of the Chaldeans within its reach near the furnace.
Angelus autem Domini descendit cum Azaria,But the angel of the Lord descended with Azariahet sociis ejus in fornacem:and his companions into the furnace;et excussit flammam ignis de fornace, and he cast the flame of the fire out of the furnace.
et fecit medium fornacis quasi ventum roris flantem,And he made the middle of the furnace like the blowing of a damp wind,et non tetigit eos omnino ignis, and the fire did not touch them, neque contristavit, nor afflict them, nec quidquam molestiæ intulit.nor bother them at all.
Tunc hi tres quasi ex uno ore laudabant,Then these three, as if with one voice,et glorificabant, et benedicebant Deum in fornace, praised and glorified and blessed God, in the furnace, dicentes:saying:
Benedictus es,“Blessed are you,Domine Deus patrum nostrorum:Lord, God of our fathers:et laudabilis, praiseworthy,et gloriosus, and glorious,et superexaltatus in sæcula.and exalted above all forever.Et benedictum nomen gloriæ tuæ sanctum:And blessed is the holy name of your glory:et laudabile, praiseworthy,et superexaltatum in omnibus sæculis.and exalted above all, for all ages.

Tunc Nabuchodonosor rex obstupuit,Then king Nebuchadnezzar was astonished,et surrexit propere, and he quickly got upet ait optimatibus suis:and said to his nobles:Nonne tres viros misimus in medium ignis compeditos?“Did we not cast three men shackled into the midst of the fire?”Qui respondentes regi,Answering the king, dixerunt:they said,Vere,“True, rex.O king.”
Respondit, et ait:He answered and said,Ecce ego video quatuor viros solutos, et ambulantes in medio ignis,“Behold, I see four men unbound and walking in the midst of the fire,et nihil corruptionis in eis est, et species quarti similis filio Dei.and no harm is in them, and the appearance of the fourth is like a son of God.”
Tunc accessit Nabuchodonosor ad ostium fornacis ignis ardentis,Then Nebuchadnezzar approached the entrance of the furnace of burning fire,et ait:and he said,Sidrach,“Shadrach,Misach,Meshach,et Abdenago, and Abednego, servi Dei excelsi, servants of the supreme God,egredimini, come outet venite.and approach.”Statimque egressi sunt Sidrach,And immediately Shadrach,Misach,Meshach,et Abdenago de medio ignis.and Abednego went out from the midst of the fire.
Et congregati satrapæ,And when the governors,et magistratus, and the magistrates,et judices, and the judges,et potentes regis contemplabantur viros illos, and the powerful of the king had gathered together, quoniam nihil potestatis habuisset ignis in corporibus eorum, they considered these men because the fire had no power against their bodies,et capillus capitis eorum non esset adustus, and not a hair of their head had been scorched,et sarabala eorum non fuissent immutata, and their pants had not been affected,et odor ignis non transisset per eos.and the smell of the fire had not passed onto them.
Et erumpens Nabuchodonosor,Then Nebuchadnezzar, ait:bursting out,Benedictus Deus eorum, said,Sidrach videlicet,“Blessed is their God,Misach, the God of Shadrach,et Abdenago:Meshach, qui misit angelum suum, and Abednego,et eruit servos suos, who sent his angelqui crediderunt in eum:and rescued his servants who believed in him.et verbum regis immutaverunt,And they altered the verdict of the king,et tradiderunt corpora sua ne servirent, and they delivered up their bodies,et ne adorarent omnem deum,so that they would not serveexcepto Deo suo.or adore any god except their God.
A me ergo positum est hoc decretum:Therefore,ut omnis populus, this decree is established by me:tribus, that every people,et lingua, tribe,quæcumque locuta fuerit blasphemiam contra Deum Sidrach, and language,Misach, whenever they have spoken blasphemy against the God of Shadrach,et Abdenago,Meshach, dispereat, and Abednego,et domus ejus vastetur:will perishneque enim est alius deus, and their homes will be destroyed.qui possit ita salvare. For there is no other God who is able to save in this way.”
Tunc rex promovit Sidrach,Then the king promoted Shadrach,Misach,Meshach,et Abdenago in provincia Babylonis.and Abednego in the province of Babylon.
Nabuchodonosor rex,Nebuchadnezzar, the king, omnibus populis,to all peoples, gentibus, nations,et linguis, and languages, qui habitant in universa terra, who dwell in the whole world, pax vobis multiplicetur.may peace be increased with you.
