Placuit Dario,It pleased Darius,et constituit super regnum satrapas centum viginti ut essent in toto regno suo.and so he appointed over the kingdom one hundred twenty governors, to be placed throughout his whole kingdom.

Et super eos principes tres,And over these,ex quibus Daniel unus erat:three leaders,ut satrapæ illis redderent rationem,of whom Daniel was one,et rex non sustineret molestiam.so that the governors would be accountable to them and the king would have no trouble.

Igitur Daniel superabat omnes principes et satrapas,And so Daniel excelled above all the leaders and governors, quia spiritus Dei amplior erat in illo.because a greater spirit of God was in him.

Porro rex cogitabat constituere eum super omne regnum: unde principes,Furthermore, the king considered setting him over the entire kingdom;et satrapæ quærebant occasionem ut invenirent Danieli ex latere regis: nullamque causam, whereupon the leaders and the governors sought to find a complaint against Daniel and in favor of the king.et suspicionem reperire potuerunt,And they could find no case,eo quod fidelis esset, et omnis culpa,or even suspicion, because he was faithful,et suspicio non inveniretur in eo.and no fault or suspicion was found in him.

Dixerunt ergo viri illi:Therefore, these men said,Non inveniemus Danieli huic aliquam occasionem,“We will not find any complaint against this Daniel, nisi forte in lege Dei sui.unless it is against the law of his God.”

Tunc principes et satrapæ surripuerunt regi, et sic locuti sunt ei:Then the leaders and governors took the king aside privately and spoke to him in this way:Dari rex, in æternum vive!“King Darius, live forever.

consilium inierunt omnes principes regni tui,All the leaders of your kingdom, magistratus, the magistrateset satrapæ,and governors, senatores, the senatorset judices, and judges,ut decretum imperatorium exeat, have taken counsel that an imperial decreeet edictum:and edict should be published,ut omnis,so that all who ask any petition of any godqui petierit aliquam petitionem a quocumque deo et homine usque ad triginta dies,or man for thirty days, nisi a te,except of you, rex,O king, mittatur in lacum leonum.will be cast into the den of lions.

Nunc itaque rex,Now,confirma sententiam, therefore,et scribe decretum:O king,ut non immutetur quod statutum est a Medisconfirm this judgment and write the decree,et Persis,so that what is established by the Medes and Persians may not be altered, nec prævaricari cuiquam liceat.nor will any man be allowed to transgress it.”

Porro rex Darius proposuit edictum,And so king Darius set forth the decreeet statuit.and established it.

Quod cum Daniel comperisset,Now when Daniel learned of this,id est, namely, constitutam legem, ingressus est domum suam:that the law had been established, he entered his house,et fenestris apertis in cœnaculo suo contra Jerusalem tribus temporibus in die flectebat genua sua, and, opening the windows in his upper room towards Jerusalem, he knelt down three times a day,et adorabat, confitebaturque coram Deo suo sicut et ante facere consueverat.and he adored and gave thanks before his God, as he had been accustomed to do previously.

Viri ergo illi curiosius inquirentes invenerunt Danielem orantem, et obsecrantem Deum suum. Therefore, these men, inquiring diligently, discovered that Daniel was praying and making supplication to his God.

Et accedentes locuti sunt regi super edicto: Rex,And they approached and spoke to the king about the edict.numquid non constituisti ut omnis homo qui rogaret quemquam de diis et hominibus usque ad dies triginta,“O king, did you not decree that every man who makes a request to any of the gods or men for thirty days, except to yourself, nisi te,O king, rex, mitteretur in lacum leonum?would be cast into the den of lions?”Ad quos respondens rex, ait:To which the king replied, saying,Verus est sermo juxta decretum Medorum atque Persarum,“The sentence is true, and according to the decree of the Medes and Persians, quod prævaricari non licet.it is not lawful to violate it.”

Tunc respondentes dixerunt coram rege:Then they answered and said before the king,Daniel de filiis captivitatis Juda,“Daniel, of the sons of the captivity of Judah, non curavit de lege tua,is not concerned about your law,et de edicto quod constituisti: sed tribus temporibus per diem orat obsecratione sua.nor about the decree that you have established, but three times a day he prays his supplication.”

Quod verbum cum audisset rex,Now when the king had heard these words, satis contristatus est:he was greatly grieved, and,et pro Daniele posuit cor ut liberaret eum,on behalf of Daniel, he set his heart to free him,et usque ad occasum solis laborabat ut erueret illum.and he labored even until sunset to rescue him.

Viri autem illi,But these men, intelligentes regem, knowing the king, dixerunt ei:said to him,Scito, rex,“You know, O king, quia lex Medorum atque Persarum est ut omne decretum, quod constituerit rex, non liceat immutari.that the law of the Medes and Persians is that every decree which the king has established may not be altered.”

Tunc rex præcepit,Then the king commanded,et adduxerunt Danielem, and they brought Danielet miserunt eum in lacum leonum.and cast him into the den of lions.Dixitque rex Danieli:And the king said to Daniel,Deus tuus,“Your God,quem colis semper, whom you always serve, ipse liberabit te.he himself will free you.”

Allatusque est lapis unus,And a stone was brought,et positus est super os laci:and it was placed over the mouth of the den, quem obsignavit rex annulo suo, which the king sealed with his own ring,et annulo optimatum suorum, and with the ring of his nobles,ne quid fieret contra Danielem.so that no one would act against Daniel.

Et abiit rex in domum suam,And the king departed into his house,et dormivit incœnatus, and he went to bed without eating, cibique non sunt allati coram eo,and food was not set before him, insupermoreover,et somnus recessit ab eo.even sleep fled from him.

Tunc rex primo diluculo consurgens,Then the king, getting himself up at first light, festinus ad lacum leonum perrexit:went quickly to the den of lions.

appropinquansque lacui,And coming near to the den,Danielem voce lacrimabili inclamavit,he cried out with a tearful voice to Daniel and spoke to him.et affatus est eum:“Daniel,Daniel serve Dei viventis, servant of the living God,Deus tuus, your God,cui tu servis semper, whom you serve always, putasne valuit te liberare a leonibus?do you believe he has prevailed to free you from the lions?”

Et Daniel regi respondens ait:And Daniel, answering the king,Rex,said,in æternum vive!“O king, live forever.

Deus meus misit angelum suum,My God has sent his angel,et conclusit ora leonum, and he has closed the mouths of the lions,et non nocuerunt mihi:and they have not harmed me,quia coram eo justitia inventa est in me:because before him justice has been found in me,sedand,et coram te,even before you, rex,O king, delictum non feci.I have committed no offense.”

Tunc vehementer rex gavisus est super eo,Then was the king exceedingly glad for him,et Danielem præcepit educi de lacu:and he commanded that Daniel should be taken out of the den.eductusque est Daniel de lacu,And Daniel was taken out of the den,et nulla læsio inventa est in eo,and no wound was found in him, quia credidit Deo suo.because he believed in his God.

Jubente autem rege,Moreover, by order of the king, adducti sunt viri illi, qui accusaverant Danielem:those men were brought who had accused Daniel,et in lacum leonum missi sunt, and they were cast into the lions’ den, ipsi, they,et filii, et uxores eorum:and their sons, and their wives,et non pervenerunt usque ad pavimentum laci, donec arriperent eos leones, et omnia ossa eorum comminuerunt.and they did not reach the bottom of the den before the lions seized them and crushed all their bones.

Tunc Darius rex scripsit universis populis,Then king Darius wrote to all peoples, tribubus, tribes,et linguis habitantibus in universa terra:and languages dwelling in all the land.Pax vobis multiplicetur.“May peace be increased with you.

A me constitutum est decretum,It is hereby established by my decree that,ut in universo imperio et regno meo, tremiscant et paveant Deum Danielis:in all my empire and my kingdom, they shall begin to tremble and fear the God of Daniel.ipse est enim Deus vivens, et æternus in sæcula,For he is the living and eternal God forever,et regnum ejus non dissipabitur, and his kingdom will not be destroyed,et potestas ejus usque in æternum.and his power will last forever.

Ipse liberator atque salvator,He is the liberator and the savior, faciens signa et mirabilia in cælo et in terra:performing signs and wonders in heaven and on earth, qui liberavit Danielem de lacu leonum.who has freed Daniel from the lions’ den.”

Porro Daniel perseveravit usque ad regnum Darii, regnumque Cyri Persæ.Thereafter, Daniel continued through the reign of Darius until the reign of Cyrus, the Persian.
