Non immolabis Domino Deo tuo ovem,“You shall not immolate to the Lord your God a sheepet bovem,or an ox,in quo est macula,in which there is a blemishaut quippiam vitii:or any defect at all;quia abominatio est Domino Deo tuo.for this is an abomination to the Lord your God.
Cum reperti fuerint apud te intra unam portarum tuarum,When there will have been found among you, quas Dominus Deus tuus dabit tibi, within one of your gates which the Lord your God will give to you,vir aut mulier qui faciant malum in conspectu Domini Dei tui,a man or a woman who is doing evil in the sight of the Lord your God,et transgrediantur pactum illius, and who is transgressing his covenant,
ut vadant et servant diis alienis,so as to go and serve foreign gods and adore them,et adorent eos, solem et lunam, such as the sun and the moon,et omnem militiam cæli,or any of the host of heaven,quæ non præcepi:which I have not instructed,
et hoc tibi fuerit nuntiatum, and when this will have been reported to you, audiensque inquisieris diligenter et verum esse repereris, and, upon hearing it, if you have inquired diligently and have found it to be true,et abominatio facta est in Israël:that the abomination is being done in Israel:
educes virum ac mulierem, qui rem sceleratissimam perpetrarunt, ad portas civitatis tuæ,you shall lead forward the man or the woman who has perpetrated this most wicked thing to the gates of your city,et lapidibus obruentur.and they shall be stoned to death.
In ore duorum aut trium testium peribit qui interficietur.By the mouth of two or three witnesses,Nemo occidatur,he who is to be put to death shall perish.uno contra se dicente testimonium.Let no one be killed with only one person speaking testimony against him.
Manus testium prima interficiet eum,First, the hands of the witnesses shall be upon him who will be put to death,et manus reliqui populi extrema mittetur:and lastly, the hands of the remainder of the people shall be sent forth.ut auferas malum de medio tui.So may you take away the evil from your midst.
Si difficile et ambiguum apud te judicium esse perspexeris inter sanguinem et sanguinem,If you have perceived that there is among you a difficult and doubtful matter of judgment, between blood and blood, causam et causam, cause and cause, lepram et lepram:leprosy and leprosy,et judicum intra portas tuas videris verba variari: surge, and if you will have seen that the words of the judges within your gates vary:et ascende ad locum, quem elegerit Dominus Deus tuus.rise up and ascend to the place which the Lord your God will choose.
Veniesque ad sacerdotes Levitici generis,And you shall approach the priests of the Levitical stock,et ad judicem qui fuerit illo tempore:and the judge, who shall be among them at that time,quæresque ab eis,and you shall inquire of them, qui indicabunt tibi judicii veritatem.and they will reveal to you the truth of the judgment.
Et facies quodcumque dixerint qui præsunt loco quem elegerit Dominus,And you shall accept whatever they will say, those who preside in the place which the Lord will choose,et docuerint teand whatever they will teach you,
juxta legem ejus,in accord with his law, sequerisque sententiam eorum, and you shall follow their sentence.nec declinabis ad dexteram neque ad sinistram.Neither shall you turn aside to the right or to the left.
Qui autem superbierit,But whoever will be arrogant, nolens obedire sacerdotis imperio, qui eo tempore ministrat Domino Deo tuo, unwilling to obey the order of the priest who ministers at that time to the Lord your God,et decreto judicis, and the decree of the judge, morietur homo ille, et auferes malum de Israël:that man shall die. And so shall you take away the evil from Israel.
cunctusque populus audiens timebit,And when the people hear about this, they shall be afraid,ut nullus deinceps intumescat superbia.so that no one, from that time on, will swell with pride.
Cum ingressus fueris terram, quam Dominus Deus tuus dabit tibi,When you will have entered into the land which the Lord your God will give to you,et possederis eam,and you possess it,habitaverisque in illa, and you live in it,et dixeris:and you say,Constituam super me regem,‘I will appoint a king over me,sicut habent omnes per circuitum nationes:just as all the surrounding nations have done,’
eum constitues, quem Dominus Deus tuus elegerit de numero fratrum tuorum.you shall appoint him whom the Lord your God will choose from among the number of your brothers.Non poteris alterius gentis hominem regem facere,You cannot make a man of another people king, qui non sit frater tuus.one who is not your brother.
Cumque fuerit constitutus,And when he will have been appointed king, non multiplicabit sibi equos,he shall not multiply horses for himself, nec reducet populum in Ægyptum, nor lead the people back into Egypt, equitatus numero sublevatus, having been exalted by the number of his horsemen,præsertim cum Dominus præceperit vobis ut nequaquam amplius per eamdem viam revertamini.especially since the Lord has instructed you never to return along the same way.
Non habebit uxores plurimas,He shall not have many wives,quæ alliciant animum ejus, who might allure his mind, neque argenti et auri immensa pondera.and he shall not have immense weights of silver and gold.
Postquam autem sederit in solio regni sui,Then, after he has been seated upon the throne of his kingdom, describet sibi Deuteronomium legis hujus in volumine,he shall write for himself the Deuteronomy of this law in a volume, accipiens exemplar a sacerdotibus Leviticæ tribus, using a copy from the priests of the Levitical tribe.
et habebit secum,And he shall have it with him, legetque illud omnibus diebus vitæ suæ,and he shall read it all the days of his life,ut discat timere Dominum Deum suum,so that he may learn to fear the Lord his God,et custodire verba et cæremonias ejus, and to keep his words and ceremonies,quæ in lege præcepta sunt.which are instructed in the law.
Nec elevetur cor ejus in superbiam super fratres suos,And so may his heart not become exalted with arrogance over his brothers, neque declinet in partem dexteram vel sinistram, nor turn aside to the right or to the left,ut longo tempore regnet ipse et filii ejus super Israël.so that he and his sons may reign for a long time over Israel.”
