Vana spes et mendacium viro insensato:The hopes of a senseless man are empty and false;et somnia extollunt imprudentes.and dreams extol the imprudent.

Quasi qui apprehendit umbram et persequitur ventum,Like one who chases a shadow and pursues the wind, sic et qui attendit ad visa mendacia.so also is one who pays attention to lying visions.

Hoc secundum hoc visio somniorum,In the vision of dreams, one thing represents another, ante faciem hominis similitudo hominis.as when a mask is before the face of a man.

Ab immundo, quid mundabitur? What can be cleansed by the unclean?et a mendace, quid verum dicetur? And what truth can be spoken from a lie?

Divinatio erroris, et auguria mendacia, et somnia malefacientium, vanitas est:Erroneous divinations and false signs and the dreams of evildoers are emptiness.

et sicut parturientis,For your heart suffers from imagination, cor tuum phantasias patitur.like a woman suffering in childbirth.Nisi ab Altissimo fuerit emissa visitatio,Unless it is a visitation sent from the Most High,ne dederis in illis cor tuum:you should not set your heart upon it.

multos enim errare fecerunt somnia,For dreams have caused many to go astray,et exciderunt sperantes in illis.and those who have hoped in them have fallen away.

Sine mendacio consummabitur verbum legis,The word of the law will be fulfilled without a lie,et sapientia in ore fidelis complanabitur.and wisdom will be made plain in the mouths of the faithful.

Qui non est tentatus quid scit?He who has not been tested, what does he know?vir in multis expertus cogitabit multa:A man with much experience will consider many things.et qui multa didicit enarrabit intellectum. And whoever has learned much will explain with understanding.

Qui non est expertus pauca recognoscit:He who has no experience knows little.qui autem in multis factus est, multiplicat malitiam. And he who has done many things has made many mistakes.

Qui tentatus non est qualia scit?He who has not been tested, what kind of things can he know?qui implanatus est abundabit nequitia. He who has been deceived will be more cunning.

Multa vidi errando,I have seen much by wandering,et plurimas verborum consuetudines.and the customs of many things.

Aliquoties usque ad mortem periclitatus sum horum causa,At times, I have even been in danger of death because of these things,et liberatus sum gratia Dei.but I was freed by the grace of God.

Spiritus timentium Deum quæritur,The spirit of those who fear God is sought,et in respectu illius benedicetur.and they will be blessed by his providence.

Spes enim illorum in salvantem illos,For their hope is in him who saves them,et oculi Dei in diligentes se.and the eyes of God are on those who love him.

Qui timet Dominum nihil trepidabit:Those who fear the Lord will tremble at nothing,et non pavebit, and they will not be terrified.quoniam ipse est spes ejus. For he is their hope.

Timentis Dominum, beata est anima ejus. The soul of him who fears the Lord is blessed.

Ad quem respicit,To whom should he look,et quis est fortitudo ejus?and who is his strength?

Oculi Domini super timentes eum:The eyes of the Lord are upon those who fear him.protector potentiæ,He is a powerful Protector, firmamentum virtutis,a Firmament of virtue, tegimen ardoris,a Shelter from the heat,et umbraculum meridiani:and a Covering from the midday sun,

deprecatio offensionis,a Guardian from offenses,et adjutorium casus:and a Helper from falling, exaltans animam, who exalts the soulet illuminans oculos, and illuminates the eyes, dans sanitatem, and who gives healthet vitam, and lifeet benedictionem.and blessing.

Immolantis ex iniquo oblatio est maculata,An immolation from iniquity is a stained oblation,et non sunt beneplacitæ subsannationes injustorum.and the derisions of the unjust are not well pleasing.

Dominus solus sustinentibus se in via veritatis et justitiæ.The Lord is only for those who persevere for him in the way of truth and justice.

Dona iniquorum non probat Altissimus,The Most High does not approve of the gifts of the iniquitous.nec respicit in oblationes iniquorum,Neither does he have respect for the oblations of the unjust;nec in multitudine sacrificiorum eorum propitiabitur peccatis.neither will he forgive their sins because of the multitude of their sacrifices.

Qui offert sacrificium ex substantia pauperum, quasi qui victimat filium in conspectu patris sui.Whoever offers a sacrifice from the substance of the poor is like one who sacrifices the son in the sight of his father.

Panis egentium vita pauperum est:The bread of the indigent is the life of the poor.qui defraudat illum homo sanguinis est.Whoever cheats them out of it is a man of blood.

Qui aufert in sudore panem, quasi qui occidit proximum suum.Whoever takes away the bread of sweat is like one who kills his neighbor.

Qui effundit sanguinem,He who sheds blood,et qui fraudem facit mercenario, and he who cheats the hired hand out of his wages, fratres sunt.are brothers.

Unus ædificans, et unus destruens:When one builds and another destroys, quid prodest illis, nisi labor?what benefit do they have from their labor?

Unus orans,When one prayset unus maledicens:and another curses, cujus vocem exaudiet Deus?whose voice will God heed?

Qui baptizatur a mortuo,He who washes himself after touching the dead,et iterum tangit eum,and then touches him again, quid proficit lavatio illius?what was the benefit of his washing?

Sic homo qui jejunat in peccatis suis,Similarly, a man who fasts for his sins,et iterum eadem faciens:and then does the same again, quid proficit humiliando se? orationem illius quis exaudiet?what was the benefit of his humbling himself? Who will heed his prayer?
