Et surrexit Elias propheta quasi ignis,And the prophet Elijah arose like a fire,et verbum ipsius quasi facula ardebat.and his word burned like a torch.

Qui induxit in illos famem:He brought a famine upon them,et irritantes illum invidia sua pauci facti sunt:and those who provoked him in their envy became few.non enim poterant sustinere præcepta Domini. For they could not bear the precepts of the Lord.

Verbo Domini continuit cælum,By the word of the Lord, he closed the heavens,et dejecit de cælo ignem ter.and he brought down fire from heaven three times.

Sic amplificatus est Elias in mirabilibus suis.In this way, Elijah was magnified in his wondrous works.Et quis potest similiter sic gloriari tibi?So who can say that he is similar to you in glory?

qui sustulisti mortuum ab inferis de sorte mortis,He raised up a dead man from the grave, from the fate of death,in verbo Domini Dei:by the word of the Lord God.

qui dejecisti reges ad pernicem,He threw down kings unto perdition,et confregisti facile potentiam ipsorum, and he easily shattered their poweret gloriosos de lecto suo:and boasting from his bed.

qui audis in Sina judicium,He heeded the judgment at Sinai,et in Horeb judicia defensionis:and the judgments of punishment at Horeb.

qui ungis reges ad pœnitentiam,He anointed kings unto repentance,et prophetas facis successores post te:and he chose the prophets who would follow after him.

qui receptus es in turbine ignis,He was received into a whirlwind of fire,in curru equorum igneorum:into a swift chariot with fiery horses.

qui scriptus es in judiciis temporum,He is written in the judgments of the times, lenire iracundiam Domini,so as to lessen the wrath of the Lord, conciliare cor patris ad filium,to reconcile the heart of the father to the son,et restituere tribus Jacob.and to restore the tribes of Jacob.

Beati sunt qui te viderunt,Blessed are those who saw you,et in amicitia tua decorati sunt.and who were adorned with your friendship.

Nam nos vita vivimus tantum:For we live only in our life, post mortem autem non erit tale nomen nostrum.and after death, our name will not be the same.

Elias quidem in turbine tectus est,Certainly, Elijah was covered by the whirlwind,et in Eliseo completus est spiritus ejus:and his spirit was completed in Elisha.in diebus suis non pertimuit principem,In his days, he was not fearful of the ruler,et potentia nemo vicit illum:and no power defeated him.

nec superavit illum verbum aliquod,No word overwhelmed him,et mortuum prophetavit corpus ejus.and after death, his body prophesied.

In vita sua fecit monstra,In his life, he gave great portents,et in morte mirabilia operatus est.and in death, he wrought miracles.

In omnibus istis non pœnituit populus,In all these things, the people did not repent,et non recesserunt a peccatis suis, and they did not withdraw from their sins, usque dum ejecti sunt de terra sua, even until they were cast out of their land,et dispersi sunt in omnem terram:and were dispersed throughout all the earth.

et relicta est gens perpauca,And there was left behind a people very few in number,et princeps in domo David.but with a leader in the house of David.

Quidam ipsorum fecerunt quod placeret Deo:Some of these did what pleased God.alii autem multa commiserunt peccata. But others committed many sins.

Ezechias munivit civitatem suam,Hezekiah fortified his city,et induxit in medium ipsius aquam:and he brought water into its midst,et fodit ferro rupem, and he dug into rock with iron,et ædificavit ad aquam puteum.and he built a well for water.

In diebus ipsius ascendit Sennacherib,In his days, Sennacherib rose up,et misit Rabsacen, and he sent Rabshakeh,et sustulit manum suam contra illos:and he lifted up his hand against them,et extulit manum suam in Sion, and he extended his hand against Zion,et superbus factus est potentia sua.and he became arrogant in his power.

Tunc mota sunt cordaThen their hearts and hands shook.et manus ipsorum:And they were in pain,et doluerunt quasi parturientes mulieres.like women giving birth.

Et invocaverunt Dominum misericordem,And they called upon the merciful Lord.et expandentes manus suas extulerunt ad cælum: et Sanctus,And they spread their hands and lifted them up to heaven.Dominus Deus, audivit cito vocem ipsorum. And the holy Lord God quickly heeded their voice.

Non est commemoratus peccatorum illorum, neque dedit illos inimicis suis:He was not mindful of their sins, and he did not give them over to their enemies.sed purgavit eos in manu Isaiæ sancti prophetæ.Instead, he purified them by the hand of Isaiah, the holy prophet.

Dejecit castra Assyriorum,He threw down the army of the Assyrians,et contrivit illos angelus Domini:and the Angel of the Lord crushed them.

nam fecit Ezechias quod placuit Deo,For Hezekiah did what pleased God,et fortiter ivit in via David patris sui,and he went with fortitude in the way of David his father, quam mandavit illi Isaias, just as he had been commanded by Isaiah, propheta magnus,a prophet greatet fidelis in conspectu Dei.and faithful in the sight of God.

In diebus ipsius retro rediit sol,In his days, the sun went backwards,et addidit regi vitam.and he added to the king’s life.

Spiritu magno vidit ultima,With a great spirit he saw the final things.et consolatus est lugentes in Sion usque in sempiternum. And he consoled the mourners in Zion.

Ostendit futura,He revealed the future,et abscondita antequam evenirent.even the distant future, and hidden things before they occurred.
