1Noli facere mala,Do not choose to do evil,et non te apprehendent:and evil will not take hold of you.
2discede ab iniquo,Withdraw from the iniquitous,et deficient mala abs te.and evil will withdraw from you.
3Fili,Son,non semines mala in sulcis injustitiæ,do not sow evil in the furrows of injustice,et non metes ea in septuplum.and you will not reap them sevenfold.
4Noli quærere a Domino ducatum,Do not seek a role of leadership from the Lord,neque a rege cathedram honoris.and do not seek a seat of honor from the king.
5Non te justifices ante Deum,You should not justify yourself before God,quoniam agnitor cordis ipse est:for he is the Knower of hearts.et penes regem noli velle videri sapiens.And by no means should you wish to seem wise before the king.
6Noli quærere fieri judex,Do not seek to become a judge,nisi valeas virtute irrumpere iniquitates:unless you have sufficient strength to shatter iniquities.ne forte extimescas faciem potentis,Otherwise, you might fear the face of the powerful,et ponas scandalum in æquitate tua.and so establish a scandal within your integrity.
7Non pecces in multitudinem civitatis,You should not sin against the multitude of a city,nec te immittas in populum:nor should you cast yourself against the people.
8neque alliges duplicia peccata,And you should not bind two sins together.nec enim in uno eris immunis.For even in one sin, you will not go unpunished.
9Noli esse pusillanimis in animo tuo:Do not be cowardly in your soul.
10exorareYou should not be unwilling to beg,et facere eleemosynam ne despicias.nor to give alms.
11Ne dicas:You should not say:In multitudine munerum meorum respiciet Deus,“God will look with favor on the multitude of my gifts,et offerente me Deo altissimo,and when I make an offering to the most high God,munera mea suscipiet.he will accept my gift.”
12Non irrideas hominem in amaritudine animæ:You should not ridicule a man in bitterness of soul.est enim qui humiliatFor there is One who humbles and who exalts:et exaltat circumspector Deus.the all-seeing God.
13Noli amare mendacium adversus fratrem tuum,Do not love a lie against your brother,neque in amicum similiter facias.nor should you act the same toward your friend.
14Noli velle mentiri omne mendacium:Do not be willing to devise a lie of any kind.assiduitas enim illius non est bona.For the practice of lying is not good.
15Noli verbosus esse in multitudine presbyterorum,Do not choose to be verbose among a multitude of elders,et non iteres verbum in oratione tua.and you should not repeat the words of your prayers.
16Non oderis laboriosa opera,You should not hate laborious works,et rusticationem creatam ab Altissimo.nor the rustic life created by the Most High.
17Non te reputes in multitudine indisciplinatorum.You should not consider yourself to be among the multitude of the undisciplined.
18Memento iræ,Remember wrath.quoniam non tardabit.For it will not be delayed.
19Humilia valde spiritum tuum,Humble your spirit greatly.quoniam vindicta carnis impii ignis et vermis.For the retribution against the flesh of the impious is with fire and worms.
20Noli prævaricari in amicum pecuniam differentem,Do not betray your friend for the sake of money,neque fratrem carissimum auro spreveris.and you should not spurn your dearest brother for the sake of gold.
21Noli discedere a muliere sensata et bona,Do not choose to depart from a good and understanding wife,quam sortitus es in timore Domini:whom you have been allotted in the fear of the Lord.gratia enim verecundiæ illius super aurum.For the grace of her modesty is above gold.
22Non lædas servum in veritate operantem,You should not harm the servant whose works are honest,neque mercenarium dantem animam suam.nor the hired hand who entrusts his life to you.
23Servus sensatus sit tibi dilectus quasi anima tua:Let an understanding servant be loved by you like your own soul.non defraudes illum libertate,You should not cheat him out of freedom,neque inopem derelinquas illum.nor abandon him to destitution.
24Pecora tibi sunt,Are cattle yours?attende illis:Tend to them.et si sunt utilia,And if they are useful,perseverent apud te.let them remain with you.
25Filii tibi sunt?Are sons yours?erudi illos,Instruct them,et curva illos a pueritia illorum.and bow them down from their childhood.
26Filiæ tibi sunt?Are daughters yours?serva corpus illarum,Watch over their bodies.et non ostendas hilarem faciem tuam ad illas.And you should not display a light-hearted attitude toward them.
27Trade filiam,Give your daughter in marriage,et grande opus feceris:and give her to an understanding man,et homini sensato da illam.and you will be doing a great work.
28Mulier si est tibi secundum animam tuam,If a wife in accord with your soul is yours,non projicias illam:you should not reject her.et odibili non credas te. In toto corde tuoBut do not entrust yourself to her who is hateful.
29honora patrem tuum,With your whole heart, honor your father.et gemitus matris tuæ ne obliviscaris:And you should not forget the complaints of your mother.
30memento quoniam nisi per illos natus non fuisses:Remember that you would not have been born except through them.et retribue illis,And so,quomodo et illi tibi.give back to them as they also have done for you.
31In tota anima tua time Dominum,With all your soul, fear the Lord,et sacerdotes illius sanctifica.and consider his priests to be holy.
32In omni virtute tua dilige eum qui te fecit,With all your strength, love him who made you,et ministros ejus ne derelinquas.and you should not abandon his ministers.
33Honora Deum ex tota anima tua,Honor God from your whole soul,et honorifica sacerdotes,and confer honor on the priests,et propurga te cum brachiis.and continue to purify yourself with your strength.
34Da illis partem,Give them their portion,sicut mandatum est tibi,just as it has been commanded of you,primitiarumfrom the first-fruits and from the purifications.et purgationis,And for your ignorant offenses,et de negligentia tua purga te cum paucis.purify yourself with a smaller offering.
35Datum brachiorum tuorum,You should offer to the Lord the gift of your strength,et sacrificium sanctificationis offeres Domino,and the sacrifice of sanctification,et initia sanctorum.and the first-fruits of what is holy.
36Et pauperi porrige manum tuam,And reach out your hand to the poor,ut perficiatur propitiatio et benedictio tua.so that your atonement and your blessing may be perfected.
37Gratia dati in conspectu omnis viventis,A gift has grace in the sight of all the living,et mortuo non prohibeas gratiam.but you should not prohibit grace for the dead.
38Non desis plorantibus in consolatione,You should not fail to console those who are weeping,et cum lugentibus ambula.nor to walk with those who are mourning.
39Non te pigeat visitare infirmum:Do not let yourself be slow to visit the sick.ex his enim in dilectione firmaberis.For in this way, you will be confirmed in love.
40In omnibus operibus tuis memorare novissima tua,In all your works, remember your very end,et in æternum non peccabis.and so you will not sin, unto eternity.
