Jamque venerat mensis septimus,And now the seventh month had arrived,et erant filii Israël in civitatibus suis:and the sons of Israel were in their cities. Then, congregatus est ergo populus quasi vir unus in Jerusalem.the people were gathered together, like one man, in Jerusalem.
Et surrexit Josue filius Josedec,And Jeshua, the son of Jozadak,et fratres ejus sacerdotes, rose up with his brothers, the priests.et Zorobabel filius Salathiel,And Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel,et fratres ejus, rose up with his brothers.et ædificaverunt altare Dei Israël ut offerrent in eo holocautomata,And they built the altar of the God of Israel, so that they might offer holocausts upon it,sicut scriptum est in lege Moysi viri Dei.just as it was written in the law of Moses, the man of God.
Collocaverunt autem altare Dei super bases suas,Now they set the altar of God upon its bases, deterrentibus eos per circuitum populis terrarum:while keeping the people of all the surrounding lands away from it.et obtulerunt super illud holocaustum Domino maneAnd they offered upon it a holocaust to the Lord,et vespere.morning and evening.
Feceruntque solemnitatem tabernaculorum,And they kept the solemnity of tabernacles, sicut scriptum est, just as it was written,et holocaustum diebus singulis per ordinem secundum præceptum opus diei in die suo.and the holocaust of each day in order, according to the precept, the work of each day in its time.
Et post hæc holocaustum juge,And after these, they offered the continual holocaust, tam in calendis quam in universis solemnitatibus Domini quæ erant consecratæ,as much on the new moons as on all the solemnities of the Lord that were consecrated,et in omnibus in quibus ultro offerebatur munus Domino.and on all those when a voluntary gift was offered to the Lord.
A primo die mensis septimi cœperunt offerre holocaustum Domino:From the first day of the seventh month, they began to offer holocausts to the Lord.porro templum Dei nondum fundatum erat. But the temple of God had not yet been founded.
Dederunt autem pecunias latomis et cæmentariis:And so they gave money to those who cut and laid stones. Similarly, cibum quoque, they gave food,et potum, and drink,et oleum Sidoniis Tyriisque, and oil to the Sidonians and the Tyrians,ut deferrent ligna cedrina de Libano ad mare Joppe,so that they would bring cedar wood, from Lebanon to the sea at Joppa, juxta quod præceperat Cyrus rex Persarum eis.in accord with what had been commanded of them by Cyrus, the king of the Persians.
Anno autem secundo adventus eorum ad templum Dei in Jerusalem,Then, in the second year of their advent to the temple of God in Jerusalem, mense secundo,in the second month,cœperunt Zorobabel filius Salathiel,Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel,et Josue filius Josedec, and Jeshua, the son of Jozadak,et reliqui de fratribus eorum sacerdotes, and the remainder of their brothers, the priests,et Levitæ,and the Levites,et omnes qui venerant de captivitate in Jerusalem, and all who had arrived from the captivity to Jerusalem,et constituerunt Levitas a viginti annis et supra, began, and they appointed Levites, from twenty years and over,ut urgerent opus Domini.to hasten the work of the Lord.
Stetitque Josue et filii ejus et fratres ejus,And Jeshua and his sons and his brothers, Kadmiel and his sons,Cedmihel et filii ejus, and the sons of Judah,et filii Juda, like one man, quasi vir unus, ut instarent super eos qui faciebant opus in templo Dei:stood so that they might have charge over those who did the work in the temple of God:filii Henadad, the sons of Henadad,et filii eorum, and their sons,et fratres eorum Levitæ.and their brothers, the Levites.
Fundato igitur a cæmentariis templo Domini,And when the builders had founded the temple of the Lord, steterunt sacerdotes in ornatu suo cum tubis, the priests stood in their adornment with trumpets, and the Levites,et Levitæ filii Asaph in cymbalis, the sons of Asaph, stood with cymbals,ut laudarent Deum per manus David regis Israël.so that they might praise God by the hand of David, the king of Israel.
Et concinebant in hymnis,And they sung together with hymns and confession to the Lord:et confessione Domino:“For he is good.Quoniam bonus,For his mercy is over Israel unto eternity.”quoniam in æternum misericordia ejus super Israël.And likewise,Omnis quoque populus vociferabatur clamore magno in laudando Dominum, all the people shouted with a great clamor in praise to the Lord,eo quod fundatum esset templum Domini.because the temple of the Lord had been founded.
Plurimi etiam de sacerdotibus et Levitis,And many of the priests and the Levites,et principes patrum, et seniores, and the leaders of the fathers and of the elders, qui viderant templum prius cum fundatum esset, et hoc templum, who had seen the former temple, when now this temple was founded and was before their eyes,in oculis eorum, flebant voce magna:wept with a great voice. And many of them,et multi vociferantes in lætitia, elevabant vocem.shouting for joy, lifted up their voice.
Nec poterat quisquam agnoscere vocem clamoris lætantium,Neither could anyone distinguish between the voice of clamor of joy,et vocem fletus populi:and a voice of weeping of the people.commistim enim populus vociferabatur clamore magno,For the shouting of the people mixed into a great clamor,et vox audiebatur procul.and the voice was heard from far away.
