1Rex vero Assuerus omnem terram et cunctas maris insulas fecit tributarias:Truly, king Artaxerxes made all the land, and all the islands of the sea, tributaries.

2cujus fortitudo et imperium,And his strength and his authority,et dignitas atque sublimitas, qua exaltavit Mardochæum,and the dignity and supremacy with which he exalted Mordecai,scripta sunt in libris Medorum, atque Persarum:have been written in the books of the Medes and the Persians,

3et quomodo Mardochæus judaici generis secundus a rege Assuero fuerit,and how Mordecai of Jewish birth, was second after king Artaxerxes,et magnus apud Judæos,and great among the Jews,et acceptabilis plebi fratrum suorum,and acceptable to the people of his brethren,quærens bona populo suo,seeking the good of his people,et loquens ea quæ ad pacem seminis sui pertinerent.and speaking about things which pertained to peace for their descendants.

4Dixitque Mardochæus:And Mordecai said,A Deo facta sunt ista.“By God have these things been done.

5Recordatus sum somnii quod videram,I remember a dream that I saw,hæc eadem significantis:which signified these same things,nec eorum quidquam irritum fuit.and nothing of this whatsoever has failed to occur.

6Parvus fons, qui crevit in fluvium,The little fountain which grew into a river,et in lucem solemque conversus est,and had turned into light and into the sun,et in aquas plurimas redundavit:and overflowed into many waters, is Esther,Esther est quam rex accepit uxorem, et voluit esse reginam.whom the king received as wife and whom he preferred to be queen.

7Duo autem dracones: ego sum, et Aman.But the two dragons are I and Haman.

8Gentes, quæ convenerant: hi sunt, qui conati sunt delere nomen Judæorum.The peoples who gathered together are those who had attempted to erase the name of the Jews.

9Gens autem mea Israël est,And my people is Israel,quæ clamavit ad Dominum,who cried out to the Lord,et salvum fecit Dominus populum suum:and the Lord brought salvation to his people,liberavitque nos ab omnibus malis,and he freed us from all evils,et fecit signa magna atque portenta inter gentes:and he created great signs and portents among the nations.

10et duas sortes esse præcepit,And he commanded there to be two lots,unam populi Dei,one for the people of Godet alteram cunctarum gentium.and the other for all the nations.

11Venitque utraque sors in statutum ex illo jam tempore diem coram Deo universis gentibus:And both lots arrived at the day appointed before God, even from that past time, for all peoples.

12et recordatus est Dominus populi sui,And the Lord remembered his peopleac misertus est hæreditatis suæ.and had mercy on his inheritance.

13Et observabuntur dies isti in mense Adar quartadecima et quintadecima die ejusdem mensis,And these days shall be observed in the month of Adar, on the fourteenth and fifteenth day of the same month,cum omni studio et gaudio,with all zealousness and joy,in unum cœtum populi congregati,by the people gathered together into one union,in cunctas deinceps generationes populi Israël.throughout all the generations hereafter of the people of Israel.”
