Quæ cum audisset Mardochæus,When Mordecai had heard this, scidit vestimenta sua,he tore his garmentset indutus est sacco, and put on sackcloth, spargens cinerem capiti:strewing ashes on his head,et in platea mediæ civitatis voce magna clamabat, and he cried out with a loud voice in the main street of the city, ostendens amaritudinem animi sui, revealing the anguish of his soul.
et hoc ejulatu usque ad fores palatii gradiens. And he continued with this lamenting, even up to the gate of the palace,Non enim erat licitum indutum sacco aulam regis intrare.for no one clothed with sackcloth is permitted to enter the king’s court.
In omnibus quoque provinciis,Likewise, oppidis,in all provinces,ac locis, towns,ad quæ crudele regis dogma pervenerat, and places where the king’s cruel decision arrived, planctus ingens erat apud Judæos,there was extraordinary mourning among the Jews with fasting, jejunium, wailing, ululatus, and weeping,et fletus, with many using sackclothsacco et cinere multis pro strato utentibus.and ashes for their bed.
Ingressæ autem sunt puellæ Esther et eunuchi, nuntiaveruntque ei.Then Esther’s maids and eunuchs went in and informed her.Quod audiens consternata est,When she heard it, she was shocked,et vestem misit, ut ablato sacco induerent eum:and she sent a garment to clothe him and to take away the sackcloth, quam accipere noluit.but he would not accept it.
Accitoque Athach eunucho,And she sent for Hathach the eunuch, quem rex ministrum ei dederat, whom the king had appointed to minister to her,præcepit ei ut iret ad Mardochæum,and she instructed him to go to Mordecaiet disceret ab eo cur hoc faceret.and to discern from him why he was doing this.
Egressusque Athach,And departing, ivit ad Mardochæum stantem in platea civitatis,Hathach went to Mordecai, who was standing in the street of the city, ante ostium palatii:in front of the palace entrance.
qui indicavit ei omnia quæ acciderant:He told him everything that had happened, quomodo Aman promisisset ut in thesauros regis pro Judæorum nece inferret argentum.how Haman had promised to transfer silver into the king’s treasury for the death of the Jews.
Exemplar quoque edicti,Also, quod pendebat in Susan,he gave him a copy of the edict that was hanging up in Susa, dedit ei,so that he would show it to the queenut reginæ ostenderet, and advise her to go in to the kinget moneret eam ut intraret ad regem et deprecaretur eum pro populo suo.and beg him on behalf of her people.
Regressus Athach,And Hathach returnednuntiavit Esther omnia quæ Mardochæus dixerat.and informed Esther of all that Mordecai had said.
Quæ respondit ei,She answered him,et jussit ut diceret Mardochæo:and ordered him say to Mordecai:
Omnes servi regis,“All the servants of the king and all the provinces that are under his realm understand that anyone,et cunctæ,whether man or woman,quæ sub ditione ejus sunt, who enters the king’s inner court, norunt provinciæ,who has not been summoned, quod sive vir,is immediately to be put to death without any delay, sive mulier non vocatus, unless the king should happen to extend the golden scepter to him, interius atrium regis intraverit,as a sign of clemency, absque ulla cunctatione statim interficiatur:so that he will be able to live.nisi forte rex auream virgam ad eum tetenderit pro signo clementiæ,How then can I go in to the king, atque ita possit vivere.when,Ego igitur quomodo ad regem intrare potero, for thirty days now,quæ triginta jam diebus non sum vocata ad eum?I have not been called to him?”
Quod cum audisset Mardochæus,And when Mordecai had heard this, he again sent word to Esther, saying, “Do not think that you will save so much as your own soul, just because you are in the king’s house and are above all the Jews.
rursum mandavit Esther, dicens:And when Mordecai had heard this, he again sent word to Esther,Ne putes quod animam tuam tantum liberes, saying, “Do not think that you will save so much as your own soul, quia in domo regis es præ cunctis Judæis:just because you are in the king’s house and are above all the Jews.
si enim nunc silueris,For,per aliam occasionem liberabuntur Judæi:if you remain silent now,et tu,the Jews will be delivered through some other opportunity,et domus patris tui,but youperibitis.and your father’s house will perish.Et quis novit utrum idcirco ad regnum veneris,And who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for this reason,ut in tali tempore parareris?so that you would be prepared for such a time as this?”
Rursumque Esther hæc Mardochæo verba mandavit:And again Esther sent to Mordecai in these words:
Vade,“Go and gather together all the Jews whom you will find in Susa,et congrega omnes Judæos quos in Susan repereris, and pray for me.et orate pro me.Neither eat nor drink for three days and three nights,Non comedatis et non bibatis tribus diebus et tribus noctibus:and I will fast with my handmaids similarly,et ego cum ancillis meis similiter jejunabo, and then I will go in to the king,et tunc ingrediar ad regem contra legem faciens, doing what is against the law,non vocata, not having been called, tradensque me morti et periculo.and so expose myself to mortal danger.”
Ivit itaque Mardochæus,And so Mordecai went,et fecit omnia quæ ei Esther præceperat.and he did everything that Esther had instructed him.
