Egressus est post hæc vir de domo Levi:After these things, a man from the house of Levi went out,et accepit uxorem stirpis suæ.and he took a wife from his own stock.
Quæ concepit,And she conceivedet peperit filium:and bore a son.et videns eum elegantem,And seeing him to be handsome, abscondit tribus mensibus.she hid him for three months.
Cumque jam celare non posset,And when she was no longer able to hide him, sumpsit fiscellam scirpeam, she took a small basket woven of bulrushes,et linivit eam bitumine ac pice:and she smeared it with pitch as well as tar.posuitque intus infantulum,And she placed the little infant inside,et exposuit eum in carecto ripæ fluminis, and she laid him in the sedges by the bank of the river.
stante procul sorore ejus,His sister was standing at a distanceet considerante eventum rei.and was wondering what would happen.
Ecce autem descendebat filia Pharaonis ut lavaretur in flumine:Then, behold, the daughter of Pharaoh descended to wash in the river.et puellæ ejus gradiebantur per crepidinem alvei. Quæ cum vidisset fiscellam in papyrione,And her maids walked along the edge of the cove. And when she had seen the small basket among the papyruses, misit unam e famulabus suis: et allatamshe sent one of her servants for it. And when it was brought,
aperiens, she opened it;cernensque in ea parvulum vagientem, and realizing that within it was a little one crying, miserta ejus, she took pity on him, ait:and she said:De infantibus Hebræorum est hic.“This is one of the infants of the Hebrews.”
Cui soror pueri: Vis, inquit,And the sister of the boy said to her:ut vadam,“If you wish,et vocem tibi mulierem hebræam,I will go and call to you a Hebrew woman,quæ nutrire possit infantulum?who will be able nurse the infant.”
Respondit:She responded,Vade.“Go.”Perrexit puella et vocavit matrem suam. The maid went directly and called her mother.
Ad quam locuta filia Pharaonis: Accipe,And the daughter of Pharaoh said to her:ait, puerum istum, et nutri mihi:“Take this boy and nurse him for me.ego dabo tibi mercedem tuam. Suscepit mulier,I will give you your wages.” The woman took and nursed the boy.et nutrivit puerum:And when he was mature, adultumque tradidit filiæ Pharaonis.she delivered him to the daughter of Pharaoh.
Quem illa adoptavit in locum filii,And she adopted him in place of a son, vocavitque nomen ejus Moyses, and she called his name Moses, dicens:saying,Quia de aqua tuli eum.“Because I took him from the water.”
In diebus illis postquam creverat Moyses,In those days, after Moses had grown up,egressus est ad fratres suos:he went out to his brothers.viditque afflictionem eorum, et virum ægyptium percutientem quemdam de Hebræis fratribus suis. And he saw their affliction and an Egyptian man striking a certain one of the Hebrews, his brothers.
Cumque circumspexisset huc atque illuc,And when he had looked around this way and that,et nullum adesse vidisset, and had seen no one nearby, percussum Ægyptium abscondit sabulo.he struck down the Egyptian and hid him in the sand.
Et egressus die altero conspexit duos Hebræos rixantes:And going out the next day, he spotted two Hebrews quarrelling violently.dixitque ei qui faciebat injuriam:And he said to him who was causing the injury,Quare percutis proximum tuum?“Why do you strike your neighbor?”
Qui respondit:But he responded:Quis te constituit principem et judicem super nos?“Who appointed you as leader and judge over us?num occidere me tu vis,Do you want to kill me,sicut heri occidisti Ægyptium?just as yesterday you killed the Egyptian?”Timuit Moyses,Moses was afraid,et ait:and he said,Quomodo palam factum est verbum istud?“How has this word become known?”
Audivitque Pharao sermonem hunc,And Pharaoh heard this talk,et quærebat occidere Moysen:and he sought to kill Moses.qui fugiens de conspectu ejus,But fleeing from his sight, moratus est in terra Madian,he stayed in the land of Midian,et sedit juxta puteum.and he sat down next to a well.
Erant autem sacerdoti Madian septem filiæ, quæ venerunt ad hauriendam aquam:Now there was a priest of Midian with seven daughters, who came to draw water.et impletis canalibus adaquare cupiebant greges patris sui.And having filled the troughs, they desired to water their father’s flocks.
Supervenere pastores,The shepherds overcame themet ejecerunt eas:and drove them away.surrexitque Moyses,And Moses rose up,et defensis puellis, and defending the girls, adaquavit oves earum.he watered their sheep.
Quæ cum revertissent ad Raguel patrem suum,And when they had returned to their father, Reuel, dixit ad eas:he said to them,Cur velocius venistis solito?“Why have you arrived sooner than usual?”
Responderunt:They responded:Vir ægyptius liberavit nos de manu pastorum:“A man of Egypt freed us from the hands of the shepherds.insuper et hausit aquam nobiscum,Moreover, potumque dedit ovibus.he also drew water with us and gave the sheep to drink.”
At ille:But he said:Ubi est?“Where is he?inquit:Why have you dismissed the man?quare dimisistis hominem?Call him, vocate eum ut comedat panem.so that he may eat bread.”
Juravit ergo Moyses quod habitaret cum eo.Therefore, Moses swore that he would live with him.Accepitque Sephoram filiam ejus uxorem:And he accepted his daughter Zipporah as a wife.
quæ peperit ei filium,And she bore a son to him, quem vocavit Gersam, whom he called Gershom, dicens:saying,Advena fui in terra aliena.“I have been a newcomer in a foreign land.”Alterum vero peperit,In truth, she bore another, quem vocavit Eliezer, whom he called Eliezer, dicens:saying,Deus enim patris mei adjutor meus eripuit me de manu Pharaonis.“For the God of my father, my helper, has rescued me from the hand of Pharaoh.”
Post multum vero tempore mortuus est rex Ægypti:In truth, after a long time, the king of Egypt was dead.et ingemiscentes filii Israël,And the sons of Israel, groaning, propter opera vociferati sunt:cried out because of the works.ascenditque clamor eorum ad Deum ab operibus. And their cry ascended to God from the works.
Et audivit gemitum eorum,And he heard their groaning,ac recordatus est fœderis quod pepigit cum Abraham, and he also remembered the covenant which he formed with Abraham,IsaacIsaac,et Jacob.and Jacob.
Et respexit Dominus filios IsraëlAnd the Lord looked with favor on the sons of Israel,et cognovit eos.and he knew them.
