Videns autem populus quod moram faceret descendendi de monte Moyses,Then the people, seeing that Moses made a delay in descending from the mountain, congregatus adversus Aaron, gathered together against Aaron, dixit:and said:Surge, fac nobis deos,“Rise up, make us gods, qui nos præcedant:who may go before us.Moysi enim huic viro,But as for this man Moses, qui nos eduxit de terra Ægypti, who led us away from the land of Egypt, ignoramus quid acciderit.we do not know what has befallen him.”

Dixitque ad eos Aaron:And Aaron said to them,Tollite inaures aureas de uxorum,“Take the golden earrings from the ears of your wives, filiorumque et filiarum vestrarum auribus, and your sons and daughters,et afferte ad me.and bring them to me.”

Fecitque populus quæ jusserat,And the people did what he had commanded, deferens inaures ad Aaron.carrying the earrings to Aaron.

Quas cum ille accepisset,And when he had received them, formavit opere fusorio, et fecit ex eis vitulum conflatilem:he formed these by the work of a casting furnace, and he made from these a molten calf.dixeruntque:And they said:Hi sunt dii tui Israël,“These are your gods, O Israel, qui te eduxerunt de terra Ægypti.who led you away from the land of Egypt.”

Quod cum vidisset Aaron,And when Aaron had seen it,ædificavit altare coram eo,he built an altar before it,et præconis voce clamavit dicens:and he cried out with a voice of proclamation, saying,Cras solemnitas Domini est.“Tomorrow is the solemnity of the Lord.”

Surgentesque mane,And rising up in the morning, obtulerunt holocausta, they offered holocausts,et hostias pacificas, and peace victims,et sedit populus manducare, and the people sat down to eatet bibere, and to drink,et surrexerunt ludere.and they rose up to play.

Locutus est autem Dominus ad Moysen,Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:dicens: Vade,“Go, descend.descende:Your people, peccavit populus tuus, quem eduxisti de terra Ægypti.whom you led away from the land of Egypt, have sinned.

Recesserunt cito de via,They have quickly withdrawn from the way which you revealed to them.quam ostendisti eis:And they have made for themselves a molten calf, feceruntque sibi vitulum conflatilem, and they have worshiped it.et adoraverunt,And immolating victims to it,atque immolantes ei hostias, they have said:dixerunt:‘These are your gods,Isti sunt dii tui Israël,O Israel, qui te eduxerunt de terra Ægypti.who led you away from the land of Egypt.’”

Rursumque ait Dominus ad Moysen:And again, the Lord said to Moses:Cerno quod populus iste duræ cervicis sit:“I discern that this people is stiff-necked.

dimitte me,Release me,ut irascatur furor meus contra eos,so that my fury may be enraged against them,et deleam eos,and I may destroy them, faciamque te in gentem magnam.and then I will make of you a great nation.”

Moyses autem orabat Dominum Deum suum,Then Moses prayed to the Lord his God,dicens:saying:Cur,“Why,Domine,O Lord, irascitur furor tuus contra populum tuum,is your fury enraged against your people, quem eduxisti de terra Ægypti, whom you led away from the land of Egypt,in fortitudine magna, with great strengthet in manu robusta?and with a mighty hand?

Ne quæso dicant Ægyptii:I beg you, let not the Egyptians say,Callide eduxit eos,‘He cleverly led them away,ut interficeret in montibus, et deleret e terra: quiescat ira tua,so that he could put them to death in the mountains and destroy them from the earth.’et esto placabilis super nequitia populi tui.Let your anger be quieted and appeased concerning the wickedness of your people.

Recordare Abraham,Remember Abraham,Isaac,Isaac,et Israël servorum tuorum, and Israel, your servants, quibus jurasti per temetipsum,to whom you swore by your very self, dicens:saying:Multiplicabo semen vestrum sicut stellas cæli;‘I will multiply your offspring like the stars of heaven.et universam terram hanc, de qua locutus sum,And this entire land, about which I have spoken, dabo semini vestro,I will give to your offspring.et possidebitis eam semper. And you shall possess it forever.’”

Placatusque est Dominus ne faceret malum quod locutus fuerat adversus populum suum. And the Lord was appeased from doing the evil which he had spoken against his people.

Et reversus est Moyses de monte,And Moses returned from the mountain, portans duas tabulas testimonii in manu sua, carrying the two tablets of the testimony in his hand, scriptas ex utraque parte, written on both sides,

et factas opere Dei:and accomplished by the work of God.scriptura quoque Dei erat sculpta in tabulis. Also, the writing of God was engraved on the tablets.

Audiens autem Josue tumultum populi vociferantis,Then Joshua, hearing the tumult of the people shouting, dixit ad Moysen: Ululatus pugnæ auditur in castris.said to Moses: “The outcry of battle is heard in the camp.”

Qui respondit:But he responded:Non est clamor adhortantium ad pugnam,“It is not the clamor of men being exhorted to battle, neque vociferatio compellentium ad fugam:nor the shout of men being compelled to flee.sed vocem cantantium ego audio. But I hear the voice of singing.”

Cumque appropinquasset ad castra,And when he had approached to the camp, vidit vitulum,he saw the calfet choros:and the dances.iratusque valde,And being very angry, projecit de manu tabulas,he threw down the tablets from his hand,et confregit eas ad radicem montis:and he broke them at the base of the mountain.

arripiensque vitulum quem fecerant,And seizing the calf, which they had made, combussit, et contrivit usque ad pulverem,he burnt it and crushed it, even to dust, quem sparsit in aquam, which he scattered into water.et dedit ex eo potum filiis Israël.And he gave from it to the sons of Israel to drink.

Dixitque ad Aaron:And he said to Aaron,Quid tibi fecit hic populus,“What has this people done to you,ut induceres super eum peccatum maximum?so that you would bring upon them the greatest sin?”

Cui ille respondit:And he answered him:Ne indignetur dominus meus:“Let not my lord be indignant.tu enim nosti populum istum,For you know this people, quod pronus sit ad malum:that they are prone to evil.

dixerunt mihi:They said to me:Fac nobis deos,‘Make gods for us,qui nos præcedant:who may go before us.huic enim Moysi,For this Moses, qui nos eduxit de terra Ægypti, who led us away from the land of Egypt, nescimus quid acciderit.we do not know what has befallen him.’

Quibus ego dixi:And I said to them,Quis vestrum habet aurum?‘Which of you has gold?’Tulerunt,And they took itet dederunt mihi:and gave it to me.et projeci illud in ignem,And I threw it into the fire, egressusque est hic vitulus.and this calf came out.”

Videns ergo Moyses populum quod esset nudatus (spoliaverat enim eum Aaron propter ignominiam sordis,Therefore, Moses, seeing that the people were naked (for Aaron had stripped them because of the disgrace of their sordidness,et inter hostes nudum constituerat),and he had set them naked among their enemies),

et stans in porta castrorum, and standing at the gate of the camp, ait:said:Si quis est Domini,“If anyone is for the Lord, jungatur mihi.let him join with me.”Congregatique sunt ad eum omnes filii Levi:And all the sons of Levi gathered themselves together to him.

quibus ait:And he said to them:Hæc dicit Dominus Deus Israël:“Thus says the Lord God of Israel:Ponat vir gladium super femur suum: ite,Let a man place his sword at his thigh. Go forth,et redite de porta usque ad portam per medium castrorum, and then return, from gate to gate, through the midst of the camp,et occidat unusquisque fratrem, and let each one kill his brother,et amicum, and friend,et proximum suum.and neighbor.”

Feceruntque filii Levi juxta sermonem Moysi,And the sons of Levi did according to the words of Moses, cecideruntque in die illa quasi viginti tria millia hominum.and there fell on that day about twenty-three thousand men.

Et ait Moyses:And Moses said:Consecrastis manus vestras hodie Domino,“On this day, unusquisque in filio, you have consecrated your hands to the Lord,et in fratre suo, each one in his son and in his brother,ut detur vobis benedictio.so that a blessing may be given to you.”

Facto autem altero die,Then, when the next day arrived, locutus est Moyses ad populum:Moses spoke to the people:Peccastis peccatum maximum:“You have sinned the greatest sin.ascendam ad Dominum,I will ascend to the Lord.si quomodo quivero eum deprecari pro scelere vestro.Perhaps, in some way, I might be able to entreat him for your wickedness.”

Reversusque ad Dominum,And returning to the Lord, ait:he said:Obsecro,“I beg you, peccavit populus iste peccatum maximum, this people has sinned the greatest sin, feceruntque sibi deos aureos:and they have made for themselves gods of gold.aut dimitte eis hanc noxam,Either release them from this offense,

aut si non facis,or, if you do not, dele me de libro tuo quem scripsisti.then delete me from the book that you have written.”

Cui respondit Dominus:And the Lord answered him:Qui peccaverit mihi,“Whoever has sinned against me,delebo eum de libro meo:him I will delete from my book.

tu autem vade,But as for you,et duc populum istum quo locutus sum tibi:go and lead this people where I have told you.angelus meus præcedet te.My angel will go before you.Ego autem in die ultionis visitabo et hoc peccatum eorum. Then, on the day of retribution, I will also visit this sin of theirs.”

Percussit ergo Dominus populum pro reatu vituli,Therefore, the Lord struck the people for the guilt of the calf, quem fecerat Aaron.which Aaron had made.
