Et factus est sermo Domini ad me,And the word of the Lord came to me,dicens:saying:

Fili hominis,“Son of man, pone faciem tuam ad Jerusalem, set your face toward Jerusalem,et stilla ad sanctuaria, and pour in drops toward the sanctuaries,et propheta contra humum Israël.and prophesy against the soil of Israel.

Et dices terræ Israël:And you shall say to the land of Israel:Hæc dicit Dominus Deus:Thus says the Lord God:Ecce ego ad te,Behold,et ejiciam gladium meum de vagina sua,I am against you,et occidam in te justumand I will cast my sword from its sheath,et impium.and I will slay the just and the impious among you.

Pro eo autem quod occidi in te justum et impium,But in as much as I have slain among you the just and the impious, idcirco egredietur gladius meus de vagina sua ad omnem carnem, for this reason my sword will go forth from its sheath against all flesh,ab austro usque ad aquilonem:from the south even to the north.

ut sciat omnis caro quia ego Dominus,So may all flesh know that I, the Lord, eduxi gladium meum de vagina sua irrevocabilem.have led my sword out of its sheath irrevocably.

Et tu,And as for you, fili hominis, son of man, ingemisce in contritione lumborum, groan in the breaking of your back,et in amaritudinibus ingemisce coram eis.and groan in bitterness before them.

Cumque dixerint ad te:And when they will say to you,Quare tu gemis?‘Why are you groaning?’dices:you shall say:Pro auditu:‘On behalf of the report, quia venit, for it is approaching.et tabescet omne cor,And every heart will waste away,et dissolventur universæ manus, and every hand will be broken,et infirmabitur omnis spiritus, and every spirit will be weakened,et per cuncta genua fluent aquæ:and water will flow across every knee.’ecce venit,Behold,et fiet,it is approaching and it will happen, ait Dominus Deus.says the Lord God.”

Et factus est sermo Domini ad me,And the word of the Lord came to me,dicens:saying:

Fili hominis,“Son of man, propheta, prophesy,et dices:and you shall say:Hæc dicit Dominus Deus:Thus says the Lord God:loquere:Speak:Gladius,The sword!gladius exacutus est,The sword has been sharpenedet limatus:and polished!

ut cædat victimas,It has been sharpened, exacutus est:so that it may cut down victims!ut splendeat,It has been polished, limatus est:so that it may shine!qui moves sceptrum filii mei,You are disturbing the scepter of my son.succidisti omne lignum. You have cut down every tree.

Et dedi eum ad levigandum,And I have sent it to be made smooth,ut teneatur manu:so that it may be handled.iste exacutus est gladius,This sword has been sharpened,et iste limatus est,and it has been polished,ut sit in manu interficientis.so that it may be in the hand of the one who kills.

Clama et ulula,Cry out and wail, fili hominis,O son of man!quia hic factus est in populo meo,For this has been done among my people, hic in cunctis ducibus Israël qui fugerant:this is among all the leaders of Israel, who have fled.gladio traditi sunt cum populo meo:They have been handed over to the sword, idcirco plaude super femur, with my people. Therefore, slap your thigh,

quia probatus est:for it has been tested.et hoc,And this one,cum sceptrum subverterit, when he will have overthrown the scepter,et non erit, will not be,dicit Dominus Deus.says the Lord God.

Tu ergo,You therefore, fili hominis,O son of man, propheta, prophesy,et percute manu ad manum:and strike hand against hand,et duplicetur gladius, and let the sword be doubled,ac triplicetur gladius interfectorum:and let the sword of the slain be tripled.hic est gladius occisionis magnæ,This is the sword of the great slaughter, qui obstupescere eos facitwhich causes them to be utterly stupefied,

et corde tabescere, and to waste away in heart,et multiplicat ruinas.and which multiplies ruin. At all their gates,In omnibus portis eorum dedi conturbationem gladii acuti,I have presented the consternation of the sword, which has been sharpened and polished so as to shine,et limati ad fulgendum, amicti ad cædem.which has been dressed for the slaughter.

Exacuere,Be sharpened!vade ad dexteram sive ad sinistram,Go to the right or to the left, quocumque faciei tuæ est appetitus.whichever way is the desire of your face.

Quin et ego plaudam manu ad manum,And then I will clap hand against hand,et implebo indignationem meam:and I will fulfill my indignation.ego Dominus locutus sum.I, the Lord, have spoken.”

Et factus est sermo Domini ad me,And the word of the Lord came to me,dicens:saying:

Et tu, fili hominis,“And as for you, son of man, pone tibi duas vias, set for yourself two ways,ut veniat gladius regis Babylonis:so that the sword of the king of Babylon may approach.de terra una egredientur ambæ:Both shall go forth from one land.et manu capiet conjecturam; And with a hand, he will grasp and cast lots;in capite viæ civitatis conjiciet.he will cast at the head of the way of the community.

Viam pones ut veniat gladius ad Rabbath filiorum Ammon,You shall appoint a way, so that the sword may approach to Rabbah of the sons of Ammon,et ad Judam in Jerusalem munitissimam.or to Judah, into Jerusalem, greatly fortified.

Stetit enim rex Babylonis in bivio,For the king of Babylon stood at the fork,in capite duarum viarum,at the head of the two ways, divinationem quærens, seeking divination, commiscens sagittas:shuffling arrows;interrogavit idola,he inquired of idols, exta consuluit.and he consulted entrails.

Ad dexteram ejus facta est divinatio super Jerusalem,To his right was set the divination over Jerusalem,ut ponat arietes, ut aperiat os in cæde,to place battering rams so as to open a mouth for the slaughter,ut elevet vocem in ululatu,to lift up the voice of wailing,ut ponat arietes contra portas,to place battering rams opposite the gates,ut comportet aggerem,to cast up a rampart,ut ædificet munitiones.to build fortifications.

Eritque quasi consulens frustra oraculum in oculis eorum,And he shall be, in their eyes, like someone consulting an oracle in vain,et sabbatorum otium imitans:or imitating the leisure of Sabbaths.ipse autem recordabitur iniquitatis ad capiendum. But he will call to mind iniquities, so that it will be captured.

Idcirco hæc dicit Dominus Deus:Therefore, thus says the Lord God:Pro eo quod recordati estis iniquitatis vestræ,Because you have been remembered in your iniquities,et revelastis prævaricationes vestras, and you have revealed your betrayals,et apparuerunt peccata vestra in omnibus cogitationibus vestris, and your sins have appeared within all your plans, pro eo,because, inquam,I say, quod recordati estis, manu capiemini.you have been remembered, you will be captured by a hand.

Tu autem,But as for you, profane, impie dux Israël,O impious leader of Israel, cujus venit dies in tempore iniquitatis præfinita:whose day has arrived that was predetermined at the time of iniquity:

hæc dicit Dominus Deus:Thus says the Lord God:Aufer cidarim,Take away the diadem, tolle coronam:remove the crown.nonne hæc est quæ humilem sublevavit,Is this not what has exalted the lowly one,et sublimem humiliavit?and brought low the sublime one?

Iniquitatem, iniquitatem,Iniquity, iniquity, iniquitatem ponam eam:iniquity I will make it.et hoc non factum est, donec veniret cujus est judicium,And this was not done until the one arrived to whom judgment belongs,et tradam ei.and I will hand it over to him.

Et tu,And as for you, fili hominis, son of man, propheta, prophesy,et dic:and say:Hæc dicit Dominus Deus ad filios Ammon,Thus says the Lord God to the sons of Ammon,et ad opprobrium eorum:and to their disgrace,et dices:and you shall say:Mucro,O sword, mucro,O sword, evaginate ad occidendum:unsheathe yourself so as to slay;limate ut interficias et fulgeas:polish yourself so as to kill and to shine,

cum tibi viderentur vana, while they look upon you in vain,et divinarentur mendacia, and they divine lies,ut dareris super colla vulneratorum impiorum,so that you may be given over to the necks of the wounded impious, quorum venit dies in tempore iniquitatis præfinita.whose day has arrived that was predetermined at the time of iniquity.

Revertere ad vaginam tuam,Be returned to your sheath!in loco in quo creatus es:I will judge you in the place where you were created,in terra nativitatis tuæ judicabo te.in the land of your nativity.

Et effundam super te indignationem meam; And I will pour out upon you my indignation.in igne furoris mei sufflabo in te:In the fire of my fury, I will fan you, daboque te in manus hominum insipientium, and I will give you over to the hands of cruel men,et fabricantium interitum.who have devised destruction.

Igni eris cibus; You will be food for the fire;sanguis tuus erit in medio terræ;your blood will be in the midst of the land;oblivioni traderis:you will be delivered to oblivion.quia ego Dominus locutus sum.For I, the Lord, have spoken.”
