Et clamavit in auribus meis voce magna,And he cried out in my ears with a loud voice, dicens:saying:Appropinquaverunt visitationes urbis,“The visitations of the city have drawn near,et unusquisque vas interfectionis habet in manu sua.and each one has equipment for killing in his hand.”
Et ecce sex viri veniebant de via portæ superioris,And behold, six men were approaching from the way of the upper gate,quæ respicit ad aquilonem, which looks to the north.et uniuscujusque vas interitus in manu ejus:And each one had equipment for killing in his hand.vir quoque unus in medio eorum vestitus erat lineis,Also, one man in their midst was clothed with linen,et atramentarium scriptoris ad renes ejus:and an instrument for writing was at his waist.et ingressi sunt, et steterunt juxta altare æreum. And they entered and stood beside the bronze altar.
Et gloria Domini Israël assumpta est de cherub,And the glory of the Lord of Israel was taken up,quæ erat super eum ad limen domus:from the cherub upon which he was,et vocavit virum qui indutus erat lineis,to the threshold of the house.et atramentarium scriptoris habebat in lumbis suis:And he called out to the man who was clothed with linen and had an instrument for writing at his waist.
et dixit Dominus ad eum:And the Lord said to him:Transi per mediam civitatem,“Cross through the middle of the city,in medio Jerusalem,in the center of Jerusalem,et signa thau super frontes virorum gementiumand seal a Tau upon the foreheads of the grieving men,et dolentium super cunctis abominationibus quæ fiunt in medio ejus.who are mourning over all the abominations which are being committed in its midst.”
Et illis dixit,And he said to the others, audiente me:in my hearing:Transite per civitatem sequentes eum,“Cross through the city after him,et percutite:and strike!non parcat oculus vester,Your eye shall not be lenient, neque misereamini:and you shall not take pity.
senem,Kill, adolescentulum et virginem, even to utter destruction, old men, parvulum et mulieres interficite usque ad internecionem:young men, and virgins, little ones, omnem autem super quem videritis thau, and women. But all upon whom you see the Tau,ne occidatis:you shall not kill.et a sanctuario meo incipite. And begin from my sanctuary.” Therefore,Cœperunt ergo a viris senioribus, they began with the men among the elders, qui erant ante faciem domus.who were before the face of the house.
Et dixit ad eos:And he said to them:Contaminate domum,“Defile the house,et implete atria interfectis;and fill its courts with the slain!egredimini.Go forth!”Et egressi sunt,And they went forthet percutiebant eos qui erant in civitate.and struck down those who were in the city.
Et cæde completa, remansi ego,And when the slaughter was completed, ruique super faciem meam,I remained. And I fell upon my face,et clamans aio:and crying out, I said:Heu!“Alas, heu!alas, heu!alas,Domine Deus:O Lord God!ergone disperdes omnes reliquias Israël,Will you now destroy the entire remnant of Israel, effundens furorem tuum super Jerusalem?by pouring out your fury upon Jerusalem?”
Et dixit ad me:And he said to me:Iniquitas domus Israël et Juda magna est nimis valde,“The iniquity of the house of Israel, and of Judah, is vast and exceedingly great,et repleta est terra sanguinibus, and the land has been filled with blood,et civitas repleta est aversione:and the city has been filled with what is abhorrent.dixerunt enim:For they have said:Dereliquit Dominus terram,‘The Lord has forsaken the earth,’et Dominus non videt.and, ‘The Lord does not see.’
IgiturTherefore,et meus non parcet oculus,my eye will not be lenient, neque miserebor:and I will not take pity.viam eorum super caput eorum reddam.I will repay their own way upon their head.”
Et ecce vir qui erat indutus lineis,And behold, the man who was clothed with linen, qui habebat atramentarium in dorso suo,who had a writing instrument at his back, respondit verbum, responded a word, dicens:saying:Feci sicut præcepisti mihi.“I have done just as you instructed me.”
