In principio creavit Deus cælumIn the beginning,et terram.God created heaven and earth.

Terra autem erat inanis et vacua,But the earth was empty and unoccupied,et tenebræ erant super faciem abyssi:and darknesses were over the face of the abyss;et spiritus Dei ferebatur super aquas.and so the Spirit of God was brought over the waters.

Dixitque Deus:And God said,Fiat lux.“Let there be light.”Et facta est lux.And light became.

Et vidit Deus lucem quod esset bona:And God saw the light, that it was good;et divisit lucem a tenebris.and so he divided the light from the darknesses.

Appellavitque lucem Diem,And he called the light, ‘Day,’et tenebras Noctem:and the darknesses, ‘Night.’factumque est vespere et mane,And it became evening and morning, dies unus.one day.

Dixit quoque Deus:God also said,Fiat firmamentum in medio aquarum:“Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters,et dividat aquas ab aquis.and let it divide waters from waters.”

Et fecit Deus firmamentum,And God made a firmament, divisitque aquas, quæ erant sub firmamento, and he divided the waters that were under the firmament,ab his, quæ erant super firmamentum.from those that were above the firmament.Et factum est ita.And so it became.

Vocavitque Deus firmamentum,And God called the firmament ‘Heaven.’Cælum:And it became eveninget factum est vespere et mane, and morning, dies secundus.the second day.

Dixit vero Deus:Truly God said:Congregentur aquæ, quæ sub cælo sunt, in locum unum:“Let the waters that are under heaven be gathered together into one place;et appareat arida. Et factum est ita.and let the dry land appear.” And so it became.

Et vocavit Deus aridam Terram,And God called the dry land, ‘Earth,’congregationesque aquarum appellavit Maria.and he called the gathering of the waters,Et vidit Deus quod esset bonum.‘Seas.’ And God saw that it was good.

Et ait:And he said,Germinet terra herbam virentem,“Let the land spring forth green plants,et facientem semen, both those producing seed,et lignum pomiferum faciens fructum juxta genus suum, and fruit-bearing trees, producing fruit according to their kind, cujus semen in semetipso sit super terram.whose seed is within itself, over all the earth.”Et factum est ita.And so it became.

Et protulit terra herbam virentem,And the land brought forth green plants,et facientem semen juxta genus suum, both those producing seed, according to their kind, lignumque faciens fructum, and trees producing fruit,et habens unumquodque sementem secundum speciem suam.with each having its own way of sowing, according to its species.Et vidit Deus quod esset bonum. And God saw that it was good.

Et factum est vespere et mane,And it became evening and the morning, dies tertius.the third day.

Dixit autem Deus: Fiant luminaria in firmamento cæli,Then God said: “Let there be lights in the firmament of heaven.et dividant diem ac noctem,And let them divide day from night,et sint in signa et tempora, and let them become signs, both of the seasons,et dies et annos:and of the days and years.

ut luceant in firmamento cæli,Let them shine in the firmament of heavenet illuminent terram.and illuminate the earth.”Et factum est ita.And so it became.

Fecitque Deus duo luminaria magna:And God made two great lights:luminare majus,a greater light,ut præesset diei:to rule over the day,et luminare minus, and a lesser light,ut præesset nocti:to rule over the night,et stellas.along with the stars.

Et posuit eas in firmamento cæli,And he set them in the firmament of heaven,ut lucerent super terram,to give light over all the earth,

et præessent diei ac nocti, and to rule over the day as well as the night,et dividerent lucem ac tenebras.and to divide light from darkness.Et vidit Deus quod esset bonum. And God saw that it was good.

Et factum est vespere et mane,And it became evening and morning, dies quartus.the fourth day.

Dixit etiam Deus:And then God said,Producant aquæ reptile animæ viventis,“Let the waters produce animals with a living soul,et volatile super terram sub firmamento cæli.and flying creatures above the earth, under the firmament of heaven.”

Creavitque Deus cete grandia,And God created the great sea creatures,et omnem animam viventemand everything with a living soul and the ability to move that the waters produced, atque motabilem, according to their species, quam produxerant aquæ in species suas, and all the flying creatures,et omne volatile secundum genus suum.according to their kind.Et vidit Deus quod esset bonum. And God saw that it was good.

Benedixitque eis,And he blessed them, dicens:saying:Crescite,“Increaseet multiplicamini, and multiply,et replete aquas maris:and fill the waters of the sea.avesque multiplicentur super terram. And let the birds be multiplied above the land.”

Et factum est vespere et mane,And it became evening and morning, dies quintus.the fifth day.

Dixit quoque Deus:God also said,Producat terra animam viventem in genere suo,“Let the land produce living souls in their kind:jumenta, cattle,et reptilia, and animals,et bestias terræ secundum species suas.and wild beasts of the earth, according to their species.”Factumque est ita.And so it became.

Et fecit Deus bestias terræ juxta species suas,And God made the wild beasts of the earth according to their species,et jumenta, and the cattle,et omne reptile terræ in genere suo.and every animal on the land, according to its kind.Et vidit Deus quod esset bonum,And God saw that it was good.

et ait:And he said:Faciamus hominem ad imaginem et similitudinem nostram:“Let us make Man to our imageet præsit piscibus maris, and likeness.et volatilibus cæli,And let him rule over the fish of the sea,et bestiis, and the flying creatures of the air, universæque terræ,and the wild beasts, omnique reptili, and the entire earth, quod movetur in terra.and every animal that moves on the earth.”

Et creavit Deus hominem ad imaginem suam:And God created man to his own image;ad imaginem Dei creavit illum,to the image of God he created him;masculummale and female,et feminam creavit eos.he created them.

Benedixitque illis Deus,And God blessed them,et ait:and he said,Crescite et multiplicamini,“Increaseet replete terram, and multiply,et subjicite eam,and fill the earth,et dominamini piscibus maris, and subdue it,et volatilibus cæli,and have dominion over the fish of the sea,et universis animantibus, and the flying creatures of the air,quæ moventur super terram.and over every living thing that moves upon the earth.”

Dixitque Deus:And God said:Ecce dedi vobis omnem herbam afferentem semen super terram,“Behold, I have given you every seed-bearing plant upon the earth,et universa ligna quæ habent in semetipsis sementem generis sui,and all the trees that have in themselves the ability to sow their own kind,ut sint vobis in escam:to be food for you,

et cunctis animantibus terræ,and for all the animals of the land, omnique volucri cæli,and for all the flying things of the air,et universis quæ moventur in terra, and for everything that moves upon the earthet in quibus est anima vivens, and in which there is a living soul,ut habeant ad vescendum.so that they may have these on which to feed.”Et factum est ita.And so it became.

Viditque Deus cuncta quæ fecerat,And God saw everything that he had made.et erant valde bona. And they were very good.Et factum est vespere et mane,And it became evening and morning, dies sextus.the sixth day.
