Erat autem terra labii unius,Now the earth was of one languageet sermonum eorumdem.and of the same speech.

Cumque proficiscerentur de oriente,And when they were advancing from the east, invenerunt campum in terra Sennaar, they found a plain in the land of Shinar,et habitaverunt in eo.and they dwelt in it.

Dixitque alter ad proximum suum:And each one said to his neighbor,Venite,“Come, faciamus lateres, let us make bricks,et coquamus eos igni.and bake them with fire.”Habueruntque lateres pro saxis,And they had bricks instead of stones,et bitumen pro cæmento:and pitch instead of mortar.

et dixerunt:And they said:Venite,“Come, faciamus nobis civitatem et turrim, let us make a city and a tower, cujus culmen pertingat ad cælum:so that its height may reach to heaven.et celebremus nomen nostrum antequam dividamur in universas terras. And let us make our name famous before we are divided into all the lands.”

Descendit autem Dominus ut videret civitatem et turrim,Then the Lord descended to see the city and the tower, quam ædificabant filii Adam, which the sons of Adam were building.

et dixit:And he said:Ecce,“Behold, unus est populus, the people are united,et unum labium omnibus:and all have one tongue.cœperuntque hoc facere,And since they have begun to do this, nec desistent a cogitationibus suis, they will not desist from their plans, donec eas opere compleant.until they have completed their work.

Venite igitur,Therefore, come, descendamus, let us descend,et confundamus ibi linguam eorum, and in that place confound their tongue,ut non audiat unusquisque vocem proximi sui.so that they may not listen, each one to the voice of his neighbor.”

Atque ita divisit eos Dominus ex illo loco in universas terras,And so the Lord divided them from that place into all the lands,et cessaverunt ædificare civitatem.and they ceased to build the city.

Et idcirco vocatum est nomen ejus Babel,And for this reason, its name was called ‘Babel,’quia ibi confusum est labium universæ terræ:because in that place the language of the whole earth became confused.et inde dispersit eos Dominus super faciem cunctarum regionum. And from then on, the Lord scattered them across the face of every region.

Porro Arphaxad vixit triginta quinque annis,Next, Arphaxad lived for thirty-five years,et genuit Sale.and then he conceived Shelah.

Vixit autem Heber triginta quatuor annis,Then Eber lived for thirty-four years,et genuit Phaleg.and he conceived Peleg.

Vixit quoque Phaleg triginta annis,Likewise, Peleg lived for thirty years,et genuit Reu.and then he conceived Reu.

Vixitque Phaleg,And after he conceived Reu,postquam genuit Reu, ducentis novem annis:Peleg lived for two hundred and nine years,et genuit filios et filias.and he conceived sons and daughters.

Vixit autem Reu triginta duobus annis,Then Reu lived for thirty-two years,et genuit Sarug.and then he conceived Serug.

Vixit quoque Reu,Likewise, postquam genuit Sarug, after he conceived Serug, ducentis septem annis:Reu lived for two hundred and seven years,et genuit filios et filias.and he conceived sons and daughters.

Vixit vero Sarug triginta annis,In truth, Serug lived for thirty years,et genuit Nachor.and then he conceived Nahor.

Hæ sunt autem generationes Thare:And these are the generations of Terah.Thare genuit Abram,Terah conceived Abram,NachorNahor,et Aran.and Haran.Porro Aran genuit Lot.Next Haran conceived Lot.

Mortuusque est Aran ante Thare patrem suum,And Haran died before his father Terah,in terra nativitatis suæ,in the land of his nativity,in Ur Chaldæorum.in Ur of the Chaldeans.

Duxerunt autem Abram et Nachor uxores:Then Abramnomen uxoris Abram, and Nahor took wives.Sarai:The name of Abram’s wife was Sarai.et nomen uxoris Nachor,And the name of Nahor’s wife was Milcah,Melcha filia Aran, the daughter of Haran, patris Melchæ,the father of Milcah,et patris Jeschæ.and the father of Iscah.

Erat autem Sarai sterilis,But Sarai was barrennec habebat liberos.and had no children.

Tulit itaque Thare Abram filium suum,And so Terah took his son Abram,et Lot filium Aran, and his grandson Lot,filium filii sui,the son of Haran,et Sarai nurum suam, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, uxorem Abram filii sui,the wife of his son Abram,et eduxit eos de Ur Chaldæorum, and he led them away from Ur of the Chaldeans,ut irent in terram Chanaan:to go into the land of Canaan.veneruntque usque Haran,And they approached as far as Haran,et habitaverunt ibi.and they dwelt there.

Et facti sunt dies Thare ducentorum quinque annorum,And the days of Terah that passed were two hundred and five years,et mortuus est in Haran.and then he died in Haran.
