Ascendit ergo Abram de Ægypto,Therefore, ipseAbram ascended from Egypt,et uxor ejus,he and his wife,et omnia quæ habebat, and all that he had,et Lot cum eo,and Lot with him,ad australem plagam.toward the southern region.

Erat autem dives valde in possessione auri et argenti. But he was very wealthy by the possession of gold and silver.

Reversusque est per iter,And he returned by the way that he came, quo venerat, from the meridian into Bethel,a meridie in Bethel, all the way to the place where before he had pitched his tent, usque ad locum ubi prius fixerat tabernaculum inter Bethel et Hai,between Bethel and Hai.

in loco altaris quod fecerat prius:There, at the place of the altar he had made before,et invocavit ibi nomen Domini.he again called upon the name of the Lord.

SedBut Lot also,et Lot qui erat cum Abram, who was with Abram, fuerunt greges ovium, had flocks of sheep,et armenta, and cattle,et tabernacula.and tents.

Nec poterat eos capere terra,Neither was the land able to contain them,ut habitarent simul:so that they might dwell together.erat quippe substantia eorum multa,Indeed,et nequibant habitare communiter.their substance was so great that they could not live in common.

Unde et facta est rixa inter pastores gregum Abram et Lot.And then there also arose a conflict between the shepherds of Abram and of Lot.Eo autem tempore Chananæus et Pherezæus habitabant in terra illa. Now at that time the Canaanite and the Perizzite lived in that land.

Dixit ergo Abram ad Lot:Therefore,Ne quæso sit jurgium inter meAbram said to Lot:et te,“I ask you,et inter pastores meoslet there be no quarrel between me and you,et pastores tuos:and between my shepherds and your shepherds.fratres enim sumus. For we are brothers.

Ecce universa terra coram te est:Behold, the entire land is before your eyes.recede a me,Withdraw from me,obsecro:I beg you.si ad sinistram ieris,If you will go to the left, ego dexteram tenebo:I will take the right.si tu dexteram elegeris,If you choose the right, ego ad sinistram pergam.I will pass to the left.”

Elevatis itaque Lot oculis,And so Lot, lifting up his eyes, vidit omnem circa regionem Jordanis, saw all the region around the Jordan,quæ universa irrigabatur antequam subverteret Dominus Sodomam et Gomorrham, which was thoroughly irrigated, before the Lord overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah.sicut paradisus Domini,It was like the Paradise of the Lord,et sicut Ægyptus venientibus in Segor.and it was like Egypt, approaching toward Zoar.

Elegitque sibi Lot regionem circa Jordanem,And Lot chose for himself the region around the Jordan,et recessit ab oriente:and he withdrew by way of the east.divisique sunt alterutrum a fratre suo.And they were divided, one brother from the other.

Abram habitavit in terra Chanaan;Abram dwelt in the land of Canaan.Lot vero moratus est in oppidis,In truth,quæ erant circa Jordanem,Lot stayed in the towns that were around the Jordan,et habitavit in Sodomis.and he lived in Sodom.

Homines autem Sodomitæ pessimi erant,But the men of Sodom were very wicked,et peccatores coram Domino nimis.and they were sinners before the Lord beyond measure.

Dixitque Dominus ad Abram,And the Lord said to Abram, postquam divisus est ab eo Lot:after Lot was divided from him:Leva oculos tuos et vide a loco,“Lift up your eyes,in quo nunc es,and gaze out from the place where you are now,ad aquilonem et meridiem,to the north and to the meridian,ad orientem et occidentem.to the east and to the west.

Omnem terram, quam conspicis,All the land that you see, tibi dabo, et semini tuo usque in sempiternum.I will give to you, and to your offspring even forever.

Faciamque semen tuum sicut pulverem terræ:And I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth.si quis potest hominum numerare pulverem terræ,If any man is able to number the dust of the earth, semen quoque tuum numerare poterit.he will be able to number your offspring as well.

Surge,Arise and walk through the land in its length,et perambula terram in longitudine et in latitudine sua:and breadth.quia tibi daturus sum eam.For I will give it to you.”

Movens igitur tabernaculum suum Abram,Therefore, venit, moving his tent,et habitavit juxta convallem Mambre,Abram went and dwelt by the steep valley of Mamre,quæ est in Hebron:which is in Hebron.ædificavitque ibi altare Domino. And he built an altar there to the Lord.
