His itaque transactis,And so, these things having been transacted, factus est sermo Domini ad Abram per visionem dicens:the word of the Lord came to Abram by a vision, saying:Noli timere,“Do not be afraid,Abram:Abram, ego protector tuus sum, et merces tua magna nimis.I am your protector, and your reward is exceedingly great.”
Dixitque Abram:And Abram said:Domine Deus,“Lord God,quid dabis mihi?what will you give to me?ego vadam absque liberis,I may go without children.et filius procuratoris domus meæ iste Damascus Eliezer. And the son of the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus.”
Addiditque Abram:And Abram added:Mihi autem non dedisti semen,“Yet to me you have not given offspring.et ecce vernaculus meus,And behold,hæres meus erit.my servant born in my house will be my heir.”
Statimque sermo Domini factus est ad eum,And immediately the word of the Lord came to him, dicens:saying:Non erit hic hæres tuus,“This one will not be your heir.sed qui egredietur de utero tuo,But he who will come from your loins, ipsum habebis hæredem.the same will you have for your heir.”
Eduxitque eum foras,And he brought him outside,et ait illi:and he said to him,Suspice cælum,“Take in the heavens,et numera stellas, and number the stars,si potes.if you can.”Et dixit ei:And he said to him,Sic erit semen tuum.“So also will your offspring be.”
Credidit Abram Deo,Abram believed God,et reputatum est illi ad justitiam.and it was reputed to him unto justice.
Dixitque ad eum:And he said to him,Ego Dominus qui eduxi te de Ur Chaldæorum ut darem tibi terram istam,“I am the Lord who led you away from Ur of the Chaldeans, so as to give you this land,et possideres eam.and so that you would possess it.”
At ille ait:But he said,Domine Deus,“Lord God,unde scire possum quod possessurus sim eam?in what way may I be able to know that I will possess it?”
Et respondens Dominus: Sume,And the Lord responded by saying:inquit, mihi vaccam triennem,“Take for me a cow of three years,et capram trimam, et arietem annorum trium, and a she-goat of three years, and a ram of three years, turturem quoque et columbam.also a turtle-dove and a pigeon.”
Qui tollens universa hæc,Taking all these, divisit ea per medium,he divided them through the middle,et utrasque partes contra se altrinsecus posuit;and placed both parts opposite one another.aves autem non divisit. But the birds he did not divide.
Descenderuntque volucres super cadavera,And birds descended upon the carcasses,et abigebat eas Abram.but Abram drove them away.
Cumque sol occumberet,And when the sun was setting, sopor irruit super Abram,a deep sleep fell upon Abram,et horror magnus et tenebrosus invasit eum.and a dread, great and dark, invaded him.
Dictumque est ad eum:And it was said to him:Scito prænoscens quod peregrinum futurum sit semen tuum in terra non sua,“Know beforehand that your future offspring will be sojourners in a land not their own,et subjicient eos servituti, and they will subjugate them in servitudeet affligent quadringentis annis.and afflict them for four hundred years.
Verumtamen gentem, cui servituri sunt,Yet truly, I will judge the nation that they will serve, ego judicabo: et post hæc egredientur cum magna substantia.and after this they will depart with great substance.
Tu autem ibis ad patres tuos in pace,But you will go to your fathers in peacesepultus in senectute bona.and be buried at a good old age.
Generatione autem quarta revertentur huc:But in the fourth generation, they will return here.necdum enim completæ sunt iniquitates Amorrhæorum usque ad præsens tempus. For the iniquities of the Amorites are not yet completed, even to this present time.”
Cum ergo occubuisset sol,Then, facta est caligo tenebrosa, when the sun had set,et apparuit clibanus fumans, there came a dark mist,et lampas ignis transiens inter divisiones illas.and there appeared a smoking furnace and a lamp of fire passing between those divisions.
In illo die pepigit Dominus fœdus cum Abram,On that day, God formed a covenant with Abram, dicens:saying:Semini tuo dabo terram hanc a fluvio Ægypti usque ad fluvium magnum Euphraten,“To your offspring I will give this land, from the river of Egypt, even to the great river Euphrates:
Cinæos,the land of the Keniteset Cenezæos,and the Kenizzites,Cedmonæos,the Kadmonites
et Hethæos,and the Hittites,et Pherezæos,and the Perizzites,Raphaim quoque,likewise the Rephaim,
et Amorrhæos,and the Amorites,et Chananæos,and the Canaanites,et Gergesæos,and the Girgashites,et Jebusæos.and the Jebusites.”
