4Deditque illi Balam in conjugium: quæ,And she gave him Bilhah in marriage.
5ingresso ad se viro,And when her husband had gone in to her,concepit,she conceivedet peperit filium.and bore a son.
6Dixitque Rachel:And Rachel said,Judicavit mihi Dominus,“The Lord has judged for me,et exaudivit vocem meam,and he has heeded my voice,dans mihi filium,giving me a son.”et idcirco appellavit nomen ejus Dan.And because of this, she called his name Dan.
7Rursumque Bala concipiens,And conceiving again,peperit alterum,Bilhah bore another,
8pro quo ait Rachel:about whom Rachel said,Comparavit me Deus cum sorore mea,“God has compared me with my sister,et invalui:and I have prevailed.”vocavitque eum Nephthali.And she called him Naphtali.
9Sentiens Lia quod parere desiisset,Leah, perceiving that she had desisted from child-bearing,Zelpham ancillam suam marito tradidit.delivered Zilpah, her handmaid, to her husband.
10Qua post conceptum edente filium,And she, after having borne a son with difficulty,
11dixit:said:Feliciter,“Happiness!”et idcirco vocavit nomen ejus Gad.And for this reason, she called his name Gad.
12Peperit quoque Zelpha alterum.Likewise, Zilpah bore another.
13Dixitque Lia:And Leah said,Hoc pro beatitudine mea:“This one is for my happiness.beatam quippe me dicent mulieres:Indeed, women will call me blessed.”propterea appellavit eum Aser.Because of this, she called him Asher.
14Egressus autem Ruben tempore messis triticeæ in agrum,Then Reuben, going out into the field at the time of the wheat harvest,reperit mandragoras, quas matri Liæ detulit.found mandrakes. These he brought to his mother Leah.Dixitque Rachel:And Rachel said,Da mihi partem de mandragoris filii tui.“Give me a portion of your son’s mandrakes.”
15Illa respondit:She responded,Parumne tibi videtur quod præripueris maritum mihi,“Does it seem like such a small matter to you, that you have usurped from me my husband,nisi etiam mandragoras filii mei tuleris?unless you will also take my son’s mandrakes?”Ait Rachel:Rachel said,Dormiat tecum hac nocte pro mandragoris filii tui.“He will sleep with you this night because of your son’s mandrakes.”
16Redeuntique ad vesperam Jacob de agro, egressa est in occursum ejus Lia,And when Jacob returned from the field in the evening, Leah went out to meet him,et Ad me,and she said,inquit, intrabis:“You will enter to me,quia mercede conduxi te pro mandragoris filii mei.because I have hired you for the reward of my son’s mandrakes.”Dormivitque cum ea nocte illa.And he slept with her that night.
17Et exaudivit Deus preces ejus,And God heard her prayers.concepitque et peperit filium quintum,And she conceived and bore a fifth son.
18et ait:And she said,Dedit Deus mercedem mihi,“God has given a reward to me,quia dedi ancillam meam viro meo:because I gave my handmaid to my husband.”appellavitque nomen ejus Issachar.And she called his name Issachar.
19Rursum Lia concipiens,Conceiving again,peperit sextum filium,Leah bore a sixth son.
20et ait:And she said:Dotavit me Deus dote bona:“God has endowed me with a good dowry.etiam hac vice mecum erit maritus meus,And now, at this turn, my husband will be with me,eo quod genuerim ei sex filios:because I have conceived six sons for him.”et idcirco appellavit nomen ejus Zabulon.And therefore she called his name Zebulun.
21Post quem peperit filiam,After him, she bore a daughter,nomine Dinam.named Dinah.
22Recordatus quoque Dominus Rachelis,The Lord,exaudivit eam,likewise remembering Rachel,et aperuit vulvam ejus.heeded her and opened her womb.
23Quæ concepit,And she conceivedet peperit filium,and bore a son,dicens:saying,Abstulit Deus opprobrium meum.“God has taken away my reproach.”
24Et vocavit nomen ejus Joseph,And she called his name Joseph,dicens:saying,Addat mihi Dominus filium alterum.“The Lord has added to me another son.”
25Nato autem Joseph,But when Joseph was born,dixit Jacob socero suo:Jacob said to his father-in-law:Dimitte me ut revertar in patriam,“Release me,et ad terram meam.so that I may return to my native country and to my land.
26Da mihi uxores,Give me my wives,et liberos meos,and my children,pro quibus servivi tibi,for whom I have served you,ut abeam:so that I may depart.tu nosti servitutem qua servivi tibi.You know the servitude with which I have served you.”
27Ait illi Laban:Laban said to him:Inveniam gratiam in conspectu tuo,“May I find grace in your sight.experimento didici, quia benedixerit mihi Deus propter te:I have learned by experience that God has blessed me because of you.
28constitue mercedem tuam quam dem tibi.Choose your wages, which I will give you.”
29At ille respondit:But he responded:Tu nosti quomodo servierim tibi,“You know how I have served you,et quanta in manibus meis fuerit possessio tua.and how great your possession became in my hands.
30Modicum habuisti antequam venirem ad te,You had little before I came to you,et nunc dives effectus es:and now you have achieved riches.benedixitque tibi Dominus ad introitum meum.And the Lord has blessed you since my arrival. It is just,Justum est igitur ut aliquando provideam etiam domui meæ.therefore, that at some time I also should provide for my own house.”
31Dixitque Laban:And Laban said,Quid tibi dabo?“What shall I give to you?”At ille ait:But he said,Nihil volo:“I want nothing.sed si feceris quod postulo,But if you will do what I ask,iterum pascam,I will feedet custodiam pecora tua.and guard your sheep again.
32Gyra omnes greges tuos,Go around through all your flockset separa cunctas oves varias,and separate all the sheep of variegatedet sparso vellere;or spotted fleece;quodcumque furvum,and whatever will be darkenedet maculosum,or blemishedvariumque fuerit,or variegated,tam in ovibus quam in capris,as much among the sheep as among the goats,erit merces mea.will be my wages.
33Respondebitque mihi cras justitia mea,And my justice will answer on my behalf tomorrow,quando placiti tempus advenerit coram te:when the time of settlement arrives before you.et omnia quæ non fuerint varia,And all that is not variegatedet maculosa,or blemishedet furva,or darkened,tam in ovibus quam in capris,as much among the sheep as among the goats,furti me arguent.these will prove me to be a thief.”
34Dixitque Laban:And Laban said,Gratum habeo quod petis.“I hold favor for this request.”
35Et separavit in die illa capras,And on that day he separated the she-goats,et oves,and the sheep,et hircos,and the he-goats,et arietes varios,and the rams with variegations or with blemishes.atque maculosos:But every one of the flock which was of one color,cunctum autem gregem unicolorem,that is,id est albi et nigri velleris,of white or of black fleece,tradidit in manu filiorum suorum.he delivered into the hands of his sons.
36Et posuit spatium itineris trium dierum inter se et generum,And he established a distance of three days journey between himself and his son-in-law,qui pascebat reliquos greges ejus.who pastured the remainder of his flock.
37Tollens ergo Jacob virgas populeas virides,Then Jacob, taking green branches of poplar,et amygdalinas, et ex platanis,and almond, and sycamore trees,ex parte decorticavit eas: detractisque corticibus,debarked them in part. And when the bark was pulled off,in his, quæ spoliata fuerant,in the parts that were stripped,candor apparuit:there appeared whiteness,illa vero quæ integra fuerant,yet the parts that were left whole,viridia permanserunt:remained green. And so,atque in hunc modum color effectus est varius.in this way the color was made variegated.
38Posuitque eas in canalibus,And he placed them in the troughs,ubi effundebatur aqua:where the water was poured out,ut cum venissent greges ad bibendum,so that when the flocks had arrived to drink,ante oculos haberent virgas,they would have the branches before their eyes,et in aspectu earum conciperent.and in their sight they might conceive.
39Factumque est ut in ipso calore coitus,And it happened that,oves intuerentur virgas,in the very heat of joining together,et parerent maculosa,the sheep looked upon the branches,et varia,and they bore the blemished and the variegated,et diverso colore respersa.those speckled with diverse color.
40Divisitque gregem Jacob,And Jacob divided the flock,et posuit virgas in canalibus ante oculos arietum:and he set the branches in the troughs before the eyes of the rams.erant autem alba et nigra quæque,Now whatever was white or black belonged to Laban,Laban;but,cetera vero,in truth,Jacob,the others belonged to Jacob,separatis inter se gregibus.for the flocks were dispersed among one another.
41Igitur quando primo tempore ascendebantur oves,Therefore,ponebat Jacob virgas in canalibus aquarum ante oculos arietumwhen the first to arrive were climbing on the ewes,et ovium,Jacob placed the branches in the troughs of water before the eyes of the rams and the sheep,ut in earum contemplatione conciperent:so that they might conceive while they were gazing upon them.
42quando vero serotina admissura erat, et conceptus extremus,Yet when the late arrivals and the last to conceive were let in,non ponebat eas.he did not place these.Factaque sunt ea quæ erant serotina,And so those that arrived late became Laban’s,Laban: et quæ primi temporis, Jacob.and those that arrived first became Jacob’s.
43Ditatusque est homo ultra modum,And the man was enriched beyond limit,et habuit greges multos,and he had many flocks,ancillas et servos,women servants and men servants,camelos et asinos.camels and donkeys.
