Egressa est autem Dina filia Liæ ut videret mulieres regionis illius. Then Dinah, the daughter of Leah, went out to see the women of that region.

Quam cum vidisset Sichem filius Hemor Hevæi,And when Shechem, the son of Hamor the Hivite, the leader of that land, princeps terræ illius, adamavit eam:had seen her, he fell in love with her.et rapuit, et dormivit cum illa,And so he seized her and slept with her,vi opprimens virginem.overwhelming the virgin by force.

Et conglutinata est anima ejus cum ea,And his soul was closely bound to her, and, tristemque delinivit blanditiis.since she was sorrowful, he soothed her with flattery.

Et pergens ad Hemor patrem suum:And going on to Hamor,Accipe, his father, inquit,he said, mihi puellam hanc conjugem.“Obtain this girl for me as a mate.”

Quod cum audisset Jacob absentibus filiis,But when Jacob had heard this,et in pastu pecorum occupatis, since his sons were absent and he was occupied in pasturing the cattle, siluit donec redirent.he remained silent until they came back.

Egresso autem Hemor patre Sichem ut loqueretur ad Jacob,Then, when Hamor, the father of Shechem, had gone out to speak to Jacob,

ecce filii ejus veniebant de agro:behold, his sons arrived from the field.auditoque quod acciderat,And hearing what had happened, irati sunt valde, they were very angry,eo quod fœdam rem operatus esset in Israël et, violata filia Jacob, because he had done a filthy thing in Israel and, in violating a daughter of Jacob, rem illicitam perpetrasset.had perpetrated an unlawful act.

Locutus est itaque Hemor ad eos:And so Hamor spoke to them:Sichem filii mei adhæsit anima filiæ vestræ:“The soul of my son Shechem has become attached to your daughter.date eam illi uxorem:Give her to him as a wife.

et jungamus vicissim connubia:And let us celebrate marriages with one with another.filias vestras tradite nobis,Give us your daughters,et filias nostras accipite, and receive our daughters.

et habitate nobiscum:And live with us.terra in potestate vestra est:The land is in your power:exercete, cultivate, negotiamini, trade,et possidete eam.and possess it.”

Sed et Sichem ad patrem et ad fratres ejus ait:And Shechem even said to her father and to her brothers:Inveniam gratiam coram vobis:“May I find favor in your sight,et quæcumque statueritis, and whatever you will appoint, dabo:I will give.

augete dotem,Increase the dowry,et munera postulate, and request gifts,et libenter tribuam quod petieritis:and I will freely bestow what you will ask.tantum date mihi puellam hanc uxorem.Only give me this girl as a wife.”

Responderunt filii Jacob Sichem et patri ejus in dolo,The sons of Jacob answered Shechem and his father with deceit,sævientes ob stuprum sororis:being enraged at the rape of their sister:

Non possumus facere quod petitis,“We are not able to do what you ask,nec dare sororem nostram homini incircumciso:nor to give our sister to an uncircumcised man.quod illicitumFor us,et nefarium est apud nos.this is unlawful and abominable.

Sed in hoc valebimus fœderari,But we may succeed in this, so as to be allied with you,si volueritis esse similes nostri,if you are willing to become like us,et circumcidatur in vobis omne masculini sexus;and if all the male sex among you will be circumcised.

tunc dabimus et accipiemus mutuo filias vestras ac nostras:Then we will mutually give and receive your daughters as well as ours;et habitabimus vobiscum, and we will live with you, erimusque unus populus.and we will become one people.

Si autem circumcidi nolueritis,But if you will not be circumcised, tollemus filiam nostram,we will take our daughteret recedemus.and withdraw.”

Placuit oblatio eorum Hemor,Their offer pleased Hamoret Sichem filio ejus, and his son Shechem.

nec distulit adolescens quin statim quod petebatur expleret:Neither did the young man cause any delay; in fact he immediately fulfilled what was requested.amabat enim puellam valde,For he loved the girl very much,et ipse erat inclytus in omni domo patris sui.and he was well-known throughout his father’s house.

Ingressique portam urbis,And entering at the gate of the city, locuti sunt ad populum:they spoke to the people:

Viri isti pacifici sunt,“These men are peaceful,et volunt habitare nobiscum:and they want to live among us.negotientur in terra,Let them trade in the land and cultivate it,et exerceant eam, for,quæ spatiosabeing spacious and broad,et lata cultoribus indiget:it is in need of cultivation.filias eorum accipiemus uxores,We will receive their daughters as wives,et nostras illis dabimus.and we will give them ours.

Unum est quo differtur tantum bonum:There is one thing that prevents so great a good:si circumcidamus masculos nostros, whether we will circumcise our males, ritum gentis imitantes.imitating the ritual of their nation.

Et substantia eorum,And their substance,et pecora, and cattle,et cuncta quæ possident, and all that they possess, nostra erunt:will be ours, tantum in hoc acquiescamus,if only we will acquiesce to this,et habitantes simul, and so, in living together, unum efficiemus populum.will form one people.”

Assensique sunt omnes, circumcisis cunctis maribus. And they all agreed to circumcise every one of the males.

Et ecce,And behold, die tertio,on the third day, quando gravissimus vulnerum dolor est:when the pain of the wound was greatest, arreptis duo filii Jacob, two of the sons of Jacob,Simeon et Levi fratres Dinæ,Simeon and Levi, gladiis, the brothers of Dinah, ingressi sunt urbem confidenter:boldly entered the city with swords.interfectisque omnibus masculis,And they put to death all of the males.

Hemor et Sichem pariter necaverunt,They killed Hamor and Shechem together, tollentes Dinam de domo Sichem sororem suam.taking their sister Dinah from the house of Shechem.

Quibus egressis,And when they had departed, irruerunt super occisos ceteri filii Jacob:the other sons of Jacob rushed over the slain,et depopulati sunt urbem in ultionem stupri.and they plundered the city in vengeance for the rape.

Oves eorum,Taking their sheep,et armenta, and herds,et asinos, and donkeys, cunctaque vastantes quæ in domibus et in agris erant, and laying waste to everything else that was in their houses and in their fields,

parvulos quoque eorum et uxores duxerunt captivas.they also took their little ones and their wives captive.

Quibus patratis audacter,When they had boldly completed these acts,Jacob dixit ad SimeonJacob said to Simeon and Levi:et Levi:“You have troubled me,Turbastis me,and you have made me hateful to the Canaanites and the Perizzites,et odiosum fecistis me Chananæis,the inhabitants of this land.et Pherezæis habitatoribus terræ hujus:We are few.nos pauci sumus; They, illi congregati percutient me,gathering themselves together,et delebor ego,may strike me down,et domus mea.and then both I and my house will be wiped away.”

Responderunt:They responded,Numquid ut scorto abuti debuere sorore nostra?“Should they abuse our sister like a prostitute?”
