Eodem tempore,About the same time, descendens Judas a fratribus suis,Judah, descending from his brothers, divertit ad virum Odollamitem, turned toward an Adullamite man, nomine Hiram.named Hirah.

Viditque ibi filiam hominis Chananæi,And he saw there the daughter of a man called Shua, vocabulo Sue:of Canaan.et accepta uxore,And taking her as a wife, ingressus est ad eam.he entered to her.

Quæ concepit,And she conceivedet peperit filium, and bore a son,et vocavit nomen ejus Her.and she called his name Er.

Rursumque concepto fœtu,And conceiving offspring again, natum filium vocavit Onan.having given birth to a son, she called him Onan.

Tertium quoque peperit:Likewise, she bore a third, quem appellavit Sela; quo nato, whom she called Shelah, after whose birth, parere ultra cessavit.she ceased to bear any more.

Dedit autem Judas uxorem primogenito suo Her,Then Judah gave a wife to his first born Er,nomine Thamar.whose name was Tamar.

Fuit quoque Her primogenitus Judæ nequam in conspectu Domini: et ab eo occisus est.And it also happened that Er, the first born of Judah, was wicked in the sight of the Lord and was killed by him.

Dixit ergo Judas ad Onan filium suum:Therefore, Judah said to his son Onan:Ingredere uxorem fratris tui,“Enter to the wife of your brother,et sociare illi, and associate with her,ut suscites semen fratri tuo.so that you may raise offspring to your brother.”

Ille sciens non sibi nasci filios,He, knowing that the sons to be born would not be his, introiens ad uxorem fratris sui, when he entered to the wife of his brother, semen fundebat in terram,he spilled his seed on the ground,ne liberi fratris nomine nascerentur.lest children should be born in his brother’s name.

Et idcirco percussit eum Dominus,And for this reason, the Lord struck him down, quod rem detestabilem faceret.because he did a detestable thing.

Quam ob rem dixit Judas Thamar nurui suæ:Because of this matter, Judah said to his daughter-in-law Tamar,Esto vidua in domo patris tui,“Be a widow in your father’s house, donec crescat Sela filius meus:until my son Shelah grows up.”timebat enim ne et ipse moreretur,For he was afraid, lest he also might die, sicut fratres ejus.just as his brothers did.Quæ abiit,She went away,et habitavit in domo patris sui.and she lived in her father’s house.

Evolutis autem multis diebus,Then, after many days had passed, mortua est filia Sue uxor Judæ:the daughter of Shua, the wife of Judah, qui, died.post luctum consolatione suscepta,And when he accepted consolation after his mourning, ascendebat ad tonsores ovium suarum,he went up to the shearers of his sheep at Timnah, ipse et Hiras opilio gregis Odollamites, in Thamnas.he and Hirah, the herdsman of the Adullamite flock.

Nuntiatumque est Thamar quod socer illius ascenderet in Thamnas ad tondendas oves. And it was reported to Tamar that her father-in-law had gone up to Timnah to shear the sheep.

Quæ, depositis viduitatis vestibus,And storing away the garments of her widowhood, assumpsit theristrum: et mutato habitu, she took up a veil. And changing her clothing, sedit in bivio itineris, quod ducit Thamnam:she sat at the crossroad that leads to Timnah,eo quod crevisset Sela, because Shelah had grown up,et non eum accepisset maritum.and she had not received him as a husband.

Quam cum vidisset Judas,And when Judah saw her, suspicatus est esse meretricem:he thought her to be a harlot.operuerat enim vultum suum,For she had covered her face,ne agnosceretur.lest she be recognized.

Ingrediensque ad eam, ait:And entering to her, he said,Dimitte me ut coëam tecum:“Permit me to join with you.”nesciebat enim quod nurus sua esset. For he did not know her to be his daughter-in-law.Qua respondente:And she responded,Quid dabis mihi ut fruaris concubitu meo?“What will you give to me, to enjoy me as a concubine?”

dixit:He said,Mittam tibi hædum de gregibus.“I will send you a young goat from the flock.”Rursumque illa dicente:And again, she said,Patiar quod vis, si dederis mihi arrhabonem,“I will allow what you want, if you give me a pledge, donec mittas quod polliceris.until you may send what you promise.”

Ait Judas:Judah said,Quid tibi vis pro arrhabone dari?“What do you want to be given for a pledge?”Respondit:She responded,Annulum tuum,“Your ring and bracelet,et armillam, et baculum quem manu tenes.and the staff that you hold in your hand.” Thereupon,Ad unum igitur coitum mulier concepit, the woman, from one sexual encounter, conceived.

et surgens abiit:And she arose and went away.depositoque habitu quem sumpserat,And storing away the garments that she had taken up,induta est viduitatis vestibus.she was clothed in the garments of her widowhood.

Misit autem Judas hædum per pastorem suum Odollamitem,Then Judah sent a young goat by his shepherd, the Adullamite,ut reciperet pignus quod dederat mulieri:so that he might receive the pledge that he had given to the woman.qui cum non invenisset eam,But, when he had not found her,

interrogavit homines loci illius:he questioned the men of that place:Ubi est mulier quæ sedebat in bivio?“Where is the woman who sat at the crossroad?”Respondentibus cunctis:And they all responded,Non fuit in loco ista meretrix.“There has been no harlot in this place.”

Reversus est ad Judam,He returned to Judah,et dixit ei:and he said to him:Non inveni eam:“I did not find her.sed et homines loci illius dixerunt mihi,Moreover, numquam sedisse ibi scortum.the men of that place told me that a prostitute had never sat there.”

Ait Judas: Habeat sibi,Judah said: “Let her hold herself to blame.certe mendacii arguere nos non potest,Certainly, she is not able to accuse us of a lie.ego misi hædum quem promiseram:I sent the young goat that I had promised,et tu non invenisti eam.and you did not find her.”

Ecce autem post tres menses nuntiaverunt Judæ,And behold, after three months, they reported to Judah, dicentes:saying, “Tamar,Fornicata est Thamar nurus tua, et videtur uterus illius intumescere.your daughter-in-law, has committed fornication and her abdomen appears to be enlarged.”Dixitque Judas:And Judah said,Producite eam ut comburatur.“Produce her, so that she may be burned.”

Quæ cum duceretur ad pœnam,But when she was led out to the punishment, misit ad socerum suum, she sent to her father-in-law,dicens:saying:De viro, cujus hæc sunt, concepi:“I conceived by the man to whom these things belong.cognosce cujus sit annulus,Recognize whose ring,et armilla, and bracelet,et baculus.and staff this is.”

Qui,But he,agnitis muneribus, acknowledging the gifts, ait:said:Justior me est:“She is more just than I am.quia non tradidi eam Sela filio meo.For I did not deliver her to my son Shelah.”Attamen ultra non cognovit eam. However, he knew her no more.

Instante autem partu,Then, at the moment of birth, apparuerunt gemini in utero:there appeared twins in the womb.atque in ipsa effusione infantium unus protulit manum,And so, in the very delivery of the infants, one put forth a hand,in qua obstetrix ligavit coccinum,on which the midwife tied a scarlet thread, dicens:saying,

Iste egredietur prior.“This one will go out first.”

Illo vero retrahente manum,But in truth, drawing back his hand, egressus est alter:the other came out.dixitque mulier:And the woman said,Quare divisa est propter te maceria?“Why is the partition divided for you?”et ob hanc causam,And for this reason, vocavit nomen ejus Phares.she called his name Perez.

Postea egressus est frater ejus,After this, his brother came out,in cujus manu erat coccinum:on whose hand was the scarlet thread.quem appellavit Zara. And she called him Zerah.
