Adam vero cognovit uxorem suam Hevam,Truly,quæ concepitAdam knew his wife Eve,et peperit Cain, who conceived and gave birth to Cain, dicens:saying,Possedi hominem per Deum.“I have obtained a man through God.”
Rursumque peperit fratrem ejus Abel. And again she gave birth to his brother Abel.Fuit autem Abel pastor ovium,But Abel was a pastor of sheep,et Cain agricola.and Cain was a farmer.
Factum est autem post multos dies ut offerret Cain de fructibus terræ munera Domino. Then it happened, after many days, that Cain offered gifts to the Lord, from the fruits of the earth.
Abel quoque obtulit de primogenitis gregis sui,Abel likewise offered from the firstborn of his flock,et de adipibus eorum:and from their fat.et respexit Dominus ad Abel,And the Lord looked with favor on Abelet ad munera ejus.and his gifts.
Ad Cain vero,Yet in truth,et ad munera illius non respexit:he did not look with favor on Cain and his gifts.iratusque est Cain vehementer,And Cain was vehemently angry,et concidit vultus ejus.and his countenance fell.
Dixitque Dominus ad eum:And the Lord said to him:Quare iratus es?“Why are you angry?et cur concidit facies tua?And why is your face fallen?
nonne si bene egeris,If you behave well, recipies:will you not receive?sin autem male,But if you behave badly, statim in foribus peccatum aderit?will not sin at once be present at the door?sed sub te erit appetitus ejus,And so its desire will be within you,et tu dominaberis illius.and you will be dominated by it.”
Dixitque Cain ad Abel fratrem suum:And Cain said to his brother Abel,Egrediamur foras.“Let us go outside.”Cumque essent in agro,And when they were in the field, consurrexit Cain adversus fratrem suum Abel,Cain rose up against his brother Abel,et interfecit eum.and he put him to death.
Et ait Dominus ad Cain:And the Lord said to Cain,Ubi est Abel frater tuus?“Where is your brother Abel?”Qui respondit:And he responded:Nescio:“I do not know.num custos fratris mei sum ego?Am I my brother’s keeper?”
Dixitque ad eum:And he said to him:Quid fecisti?“What have you done?vox sanguinis fratris tui clamat ad me de terra. The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to me from the land.
Nunc igitur maledictus eris super terram,Now, therefore, you will be cursed upon the land,quæ aperuit os suum, et suscepit sanguinem fratris tui de manu tua.which opened its mouth and received the blood of your brother at your hand.
Cum operatus fueris eam,When you work it,non dabit tibi fructus suos:it will not give you its fruit;vagus et profugus eris super terram.a vagrant and a fugitive shall you be upon the land.”
Dixitque Cain ad Dominum:And Cain said to the Lord:Major est iniquitas mea, quam ut veniam merear.“My iniquity is too great to deserve kindness.
Ecce ejicis me hodie a facie terræ,Behold,et a facie tua abscondar, you have cast me out this day before the face of the earth,et ero vagusand from your face I will be hidden;et profugus in terra:and I will be a vagrant and a fugitive on the earth.omnis igitur qui invenerit me,Therefore, occidet me.anyone who finds me will kill me.”
Dixitque ei Dominus:And the Lord said to him:Nequaquam ita fiet:“By no means will it be so;sed omnis qui occiderit Cain, rather, whoever would kill Cain, septuplum punietur.will be punished sevenfold.”Posuitque Dominus Cain signum,And the Lord placed a seal upon Cain,ut non interficeret eum omnis qui invenisset eum.so that anyone who found him would not put him to death.
Egressusque Cain a facie Domini,And so Cain, departing from the face of the Lord, habitavit profugus in terra ad orientalem plagam Eden.lived as a fugitive on the earth, toward the eastern region of Eden.
Cognovit autem Cain uxorem suam,Then Cain knew his wife,quæ concepit, and she conceivedet peperit Henoch:and gave birth to Enoch.et ædificavit civitatem,And he built a city, vocavitque nomen ejus ex nomine filii sui,and he called its name by the name of his son,Henoch.Enoch.
Porro Henoch genuit Irad,Thereafter, Enoch conceived Irad,et Irad genuit Maviaël,and Irad conceived Mahujael,et Maviaël genuit Mathusaël,and Mahujael conceived Mathusael,et Mathusaël genuit Lamech.and Mathusael conceived Lamech.
Qui accepit duas uxores,Lamech took two wives:nomen uni Ada,the name of one was Adah,et nomen alteri Sella.and the name of the other was Zillah.
Genuitque Ada Jabel,And Adah conceived Jabel, qui fuit pater habitantium in tentoriis, who was the father of those who live in tentsatque pastorum.and are shepherds.

Dixitque Lamech uxoribus suis Adæ et Sellæ:And Lamech said to his wives Adah and Zillah:Audite vocem meam,“Listen to my voice, uxores Lamech;you wives of Lamech, auscultate sermonem meum:pay attention to my speech.quoniam occidi virum in vulnus meum,For I have killed a man to my own harm,et adolescentulum in livorem meum.and an adolescent to my own bruising.
Septuplum ultio dabitur de Cain:Sevenfold vengeance will be given for Cain,de Lamech vero septuagies septies.but for Lamech, seventy-seven times.”
Cognovit quoque adhuc Adam uxorem suam: et peperit filium,Adam also knew his wife again, and she gave birth to a son, vocavitque nomen ejus Seth, and she called his name Seth, dicens:saying,Posuit mihi Deus semen aliud pro Abel,“God has given me another offspring, in place of Abel, quem occidit Cain.whom Cain killed.”
Sed et Seth natus est filius,But to Seth also was born a son, quem vocavit Enos:whom he called Enos.iste cœpit invocare nomen Domini. This one began to invoke the name of the Lord.
