His ita transactis,After these things were done, nuntiatum est Joseph quod ægrotaret pater suus:it was reported to Joseph that his father was sick.qui,And taking his two sons Manassehassumptis duobus filiis Manasse et Ephraim, and Ephraim, ire perrexit.he went directly to him.
Dictumque est seni:And it was told to the old man,Ecce filius tuus Joseph venit ad te.“Behold, your son Joseph is coming to you.”Qui confortatus sedit in lectulo. And being strengthened, he sat up in bed.
Et ingresso ad se ait:And when he had entered to him,Deus omnipotens apparuit mihi in Luza,he said: “Almighty God appeared to me at Luz,quæ est in terra Chanaan:which is in the land of Canaan, benedixitque mihi, and he blessed me.
et ait:And he said:Ego te augebo‘I will increase and multiply you,et multiplicabo, and I will make you influential among the people.et faciam te in turbas populorum:And I will give this land to you, daboque tibi terram hanc, and to your offspring after you,et semini tuo post te in possessionem sempiternam.as an everlasting possession.’
Duo ergo filii tui,Therefore, qui nati sunt tibi in terra Ægypti antequam huc venirem ad te,your two sons, mei erunt:who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I came here to you,Ephraim et Manasses, will be mine.sicut Ruben et Simeon reputabuntur mihi.Ephraim and Manasseh will be treated by me just like Reuben and Simeon.
Reliquos autem quos genueris post eos,But the remainder, whom you will conceive after them, tui erunt, will be yours,et nomine fratrum suorum vocabuntur in possessionibus suis.and they will be called by the name of their brothers among their possessions.
Mihi enim,As for me,quando veniebam de Mesopotamia, when I came from Mesopotamia, mortua est Rachel in terra Chanaan in ipso itinere,Rachel died in the land of Canaan on the very journey, eratque vernum tempus:and it was springtime.et ingrediebar Ephratam,And I entered Ephrathet sepelivi eam juxta viam Ephratæ,and buried her next to the way of Ephrath,quæ alio nomine appellatur Bethlehem.which by another name is called Bethlehem.”
Videns autem filios ejus dixit ad eum:Then, seeing his sons, he said to him:Qui sunt isti?“Who are these?”
Respondit:He responded,Filii mei sunt,“They are my sons, quos donavit mihi Deus in hoc loco.whom God gave to me as a gift in this place.”Adduc, inquit,“Bring them to me,”eos ad me, ut benedicam illis.he said, “so that I may bless them.”
Oculi enim Israël caligabant præ nimia senectute,For Israel’s eyes were clouded by reason of his great age,et clare videre non poterat.and he was unable to see clearly.Applicitosque ad se,And when they were placed up against him, deosculatus et circumplexus eos,he kissed and embraced them.
dixit ad filium suum:And he said to his son:Non sum fraudatus aspectu tuo:“I have not been cheated out of seeing you.insuper ostendit mihi Deus semen tuum. Moreover, God has shown me your offspring.”
Cumque tulisset eos Joseph de gremio patris,And when Joseph had taken them from his father’s lap, adoravit pronus in terram.he reverenced prone on the ground.
Et posuit Ephraim ad dexteram suam,And he placed Ephraim on his right, that is,id est, ad sinistram Israël:towards the left hand of Israel.Manassen vero in sinistra sua,Yet truly Manasseh was on his left,ad dexteram scilicet patris, namely, towards his father’s right hand.applicuitque ambos ad eum.And he placed them both up against him.
Qui extendens manum dexteram,And he, extending his right hand, posuit super caput Ephraim minoris fratris:placed it over the head of Ephraim, the younger brother, sinistram autem super caput Manasse qui major natu erat, but the left hand was on the head of Manasseh, who was the elder, commutans manus.so that his hands were crossed.
Benedixitque Jacob filiis Joseph,And Jacob blessed the sons of Joseph,et ait: Deus,and he said:in cujus conspectu ambulaverunt patres mei Abraham,“God, in whose sight my fathers, Abraham and Isaac,et Isaac;walked;Deus qui pascit me ab adolescentia mea usque in præsentem diem:God, who pastured me from my youth until the present day;
angelus, the Angel, qui eruit me de cunctis malis, who rescues me from all evils:benedicat pueris istis:bless these boys.et invocetur super eos nomen meum,And let my name be invoked over them, nomina quoque patrum meorum Abrahamand also the names of my fathers,et Isaac,Abraham and Isaac.et crescant in multitudinem super terram. And may they increase into a multitude across the earth.”
Videns autem Joseph quod posuisset pater suus dexteram manum super caput Ephraim,But Joseph, seeing that his father had placed his right hand over the head of Ephraim, graviter accepit:took it gravely.et apprehensam manum patris levare conatus est de capite Ephraim, et transferre super caput Manasse. And grasping his father’s hand, he tried to lift it from Ephraim’s head and transfer it onto the head of Manasseh.
Dixitque ad patrem:And he said to his father:Non ita convenit,“It should not have come to pass this way, pater:father.quia hic est primogenitus,For this one is the firstborn.pone dexteram tuam super caput ejus.Place your right hand over his head.”
Qui renuens,But refusing, ait:he said:Scio,“I know, fili mi,my son, scio:I know.et iste quidem erit in populos,And this one,et multiplicabitur:indeed, sed frater ejus minor, will be among the people and will be multiplied.major erit illo:But his younger brother will be greater than he.et semen illius crescet in gentes. And his offspring will increase among the nations.”
Benedixitque eis in tempore illo,And he blessed them at that time, saying:dicens:“In you,In te benedicetur Israël, atque dicetur:Israel will be blessed, and it will be said:Faciat tibi Deus sicut Ephraim,‘May God treat you like Ephraim,et sicut Manasse.and like Manasseh.’”Constituitque Ephraim ante Manassen. And he established Ephraim before Manasseh.
Et ait ad Joseph filium suum:And he said to his son Joseph:En ego morior,“See, I am dying,et erit Deus vobiscum, and God will be with you, reducetque vos ad terram patrum vestrorum.and he will lead you back to the land of your fathers.
Do tibi partem unam extra fratres tuos,I give you one part beyond that of your brothers, quam tuli de manu Amorrhæi in gladio et arcu meo.which I took from the hand of the Amorite with my sword and my bow.”
