Væ Ariel,Woe to Ariel,Ariel civitas, quam expugnavit David!to Ariel the city against which David fought:additus est annus ad annum:year has been added to year, solemnitates evolutæ sunt.the solemnities have unfolded.
Et circumvallabo Ariel,And I will surround Ariel with siege works,et erit tristis et mœrens, and it will be in sorrow and mourning,et erit mihi quasi Ariel.and it will be like Ariel to me.
Et circumdabo quasi sphæram in circuitu tuo,And I will surround you like a sphere all around you,et jaciam contra te aggerem, and I will raise up a rampart against you,et munimenta ponam in obsidionem tuam.and I will set up fortifications to blockade you.
Humiliaberis,You will be brought low.de terra loqueris,You will speak from the ground,et de humo audietur eloquium tuum;and your eloquence will be heard from the dirt. And,et erit quasi pythonis de terra vox tua, from the ground, your voice will be like that of the python,et de humo eloquium tuum mussitabit.and your eloquence will mumble from the dirt.
Et erit sicut pulvis tenuis multitudo ventilantium te,And the multitude of those who fan you will be like fine dust.et sicut favilla pertransiens multitudo eorum qui contra te prævaluerunt; And the multitude of those who have prevailed against you will be like embers fading away.
eritque repente confestim. And this will happen suddenly and swiftly.A Domino exercituum visitabitur in tonitruo, et commotione terræ,It will be visited from the Lord of hosts with thunder and earthquakes,et voce magna turbinis et tempestatis, and with the great noise of a whirlwind and a storm,et flammæ ignis devorantis.and with a flame of devouring fire.
Et erit sicut somnium visionis nocturnæ multitudo omnium gentium quæ dimicaverunt contra Ariel,And the multitude of all the nations that have struggled against Ariel will be like the dream of a vision by night,et omnes qui militaverunt, along with all who have battled,et obsederunt, and besieged,et prævaluerunt adversus eam.and prevailed against it.
Et sicut somniat esuriens, et comedit,And it will be like one who is hungry and dreams of eating, but,cum autem fuerit expergefactus, when he has been awakened, his soul is empty.vacua est anima ejus; et sicut somniat sitiens et bibit,And it will be like one who is thirsty and dreams of drinking,et postquam fuerit expergefactus, but, after he has been awakened, lassus adhuc sitit, et anima ejus vacua est:he still languishes in thirst, and his soul is empty.sic erit multitudo omnium gentium quæ dimicaverunt contra montem Sion.So shall the multitude of all the nations be, who have struggled against Mount Zion.
Obstupescite et admiramini;Be stupefied and in wonder!fluctuate et vacillate;Shake and quiver!inebriamini,Be inebriated,et non a vino;but not from wine!movemini,Stagger,et non ab ebrietate.but not from drunkenness!
Quoniam miscuit vobis Dominus spiritum soporis; For the Lord has mixed for you a spirit of deep sleep.claudet oculos vestros:He will close your eyes.prophetas et principes vestros,He will cover your prophetsqui vident visiones, and leaders, operiet.who see visions.
Et erit vobis visio omnium sicut verba libri signati,And the vision of all will be to you like the words of a sealed book, which, quem cum dederint scienti litteras, when they have given it to someone who knows how to read, dicent: Lege istum:they will say, “Read this,”et respondebit:but he will respond,Non possum,“I cannot;signatus est enim.for it has been sealed.”
Et dabitur liber nescienti litteras,But if the book is given to someone who does not know how to read, diceturque ei:and it is said to him,Lege;“Read,”et respondebit:then he will respond,Nescio litteras.“I do not know how to read.”
Et dixit Dominus:And the Lord said:Eo quod appropinquat populus iste ore suo,Since this people have drawn near to me only with their mouth,et labiis suis glorificat me,and their lips glorify me while their heart is far from me,cor autem ejus longe est a me,and their fear of me is based on the commandmentset timuerunt me mandato hominum et doctrinis, and doctrines of men,
ideo ecce ego addam ut admirationem faciam populo huic miraculo grandi et stupendo;for this reason, behold, I will proceed to accomplish a wonder for this people, peribit enim sapientia a sapientibus ejus,a great and mystifying miracle. For wisdom will perish from their wise,et intellectus prudentium ejus abscondetur.and the understanding of their prudent will be concealed.
Væ qui profundi estis corde,Woe to you who use the depths of the heart,ut a Domino abscondatis consilium;so that you may hide your intentions from the Lord.quorum sunt in tenebris opera,Their works are done in darkness,et dicunt:and so they say:Quis videt nos?“Who sees us?”et quis novit nos?and “Who knows us?”
Perversa est hæc vestra cogitatio; This intention of yours is perverse.quasi si lutum contra figulum cogitet,It is as if the clay were to plan against the potter,et dicat opus factori suo:or as if the work were to say to its maker:Non fecisti me;“You did not make me.”et figmentum dicat fictori suo:Or it is as if what has been formed were to say to the one who formed it,Non intelligis.“You do not understand.”
Nonne adhuc in modicoIn not more than a little while and a brief time,et in brevi convertetur Libanus in carmel,Lebanon will be turned into a fruitful field,et carmel in saltum reputabitur?and a fruitful field will be considered to be a forest.
Et audient in die illa surdi verba libri,And in that day,et de tenebristhe deaf will hear the words of a book,et caligine oculi cæcorum videbunt.and out of darkness and obscurity the eyes of the blind will see.
Et addent mites in Domino lætitiam,And the meek will increase their rejoicing in the Lord,et pauperes homines in Sancto Israël exsultabunt;and the poor among men will exult in the Holy One of Israel.
quoniam defecit qui prævalebat,For the one who was prevailing has failed, consummatus est illusor, the one who was mocking has been consumed,et succisi sunt omnes qui vigilabant super iniquitatem, and all those who were standing guard over iniquity have been cut down.
qui peccare faciebant homines in verbo,For they caused men to sin by a word,et arguentem in porta supplantabant, and they supplanted him who argued against them at the gates,et declinaverunt frustra a justo.and they turned away from justice in vain.
Propter hoc,Because of this,hæc dicit Dominus ad domum Jacob, thus says the Lord, he who has redeemed Abraham, qui redemit Abraham:to the house of Jacob:Non modo confundetur Jacob,From now on, Jacob will not be confounded;nec modo vultus ejus erubescet;from now on his countenance will not blush with shame.
sed cum viderit filios suos,Instead, when he sees his children, opera manuum mearum in medio sui sanctificantes nomen meum, they will be the work of my hands in his midst, sanctifying my name,et sanctificabunt Sanctum Jacob, and they will sanctify the Holy One of Jacob,et Deum Israël prædicabunt;and they will preach the God of Israel.
et scient errantes spiritu intellectum,And those who had gone astray in spirit will know understanding,et mussitatores discent legem.and those who had murmured will learn the law.
