Et factum est in quartodecimo anno regis Ezechiæ,And it happened that, in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah, ascendit Sennacherib, rex Assyriorum,Sennacherib, the king of the Assyrians, super omnes civitates Juda munitas, went up against all the fortified cities of Judah,et cepit eas.and he seized them.
Et misit rex Assyriorum Rabsacen de Lachis in Jerusalem,And the king of the Assyrians sent Rabshakeh from Lachish into Jerusalem,ad regem Ezechiam in manu gravi:to king Hezekiah, with a great force,et stetit in aquæductu piscinæ superioris in via Agri fullonis.and he stood near the aqueduct of the upper pool, at the road to the fuller’s field.
Et egressus est ad eum Eliacim,And those who went to him were Eliakim, filius Helciæ,son of Hilkiah, qui erat super domum, who was over the house,et Sobna scriba, and Shebna, the scribe,et Joahe filius Asaph, and Joah, son of Asaph,a commentariis.the historian.
Et dixit ad eos Rabsaces:And Rabshakeh said to them:Dicite Ezechiæ:“Tell Hezekiah:Hæc dicit rex magnus,Thus says the great king, rex Assyriorum:the king of the Assyrians:Quæ est ista fiducia qua confidis? What is this faith in which you believe?
aut quo consilio vel fortitudine rebellare disponis? And by what counsel or strength would you prepare to rebel?super quem habes fiduciam,In whom do you have faith, quia recessisti a me?so much so that you would withdraw from me?
Ecce confidis super baculum arundineum confractum istum,Behold, super Ægyptum;you are trusting in Egypt, cui si innixus fuerit homo,in that broken staff of a reed.intrabit in manum ejus,But if a man were to lean against it,et perforabit eam:it would enter his hand and pierce it.sic Pharao,So is Pharaoh, rex Ægypti, the king of Egypt, omnibus qui confidunt in eo.to all who trust in him.
Quod si responderis mihi:But if you answer me by saying:In Domino Deo nostro confidimus;‘We trust in the Lord our God.’nonne ipse est cujus abstulit Ezechias excelsa et altaria,Is it not his high places and altars that Hezekiah has taken away?et dixit Judæ et Jerusalem:And he has said to Judah and to Jerusalem,Coram altari isto adorabitis?‘You shall worship before this altar.’
Et nunc trade te domino meo,And now, hand yourselves over to my lord, regi Assyriorum, the king of the Assyrians,et dabo tibi duo millia equorum, and I will give you two thousand horses, nec poteris ex te præbere ascensores eorum:and you will not be able to find riders for them on your own.
et quomodo sustinebis faciem judicis unius loci ex servis domini mei minoribus? So how will you withstand the face of the ruler of even one place,Quod si confidis in Ægypto,of even the least of my lord’s subordinates?in quadrigisBut if you trust in Egypt,et in equitibus,in four-horse chariots and in horsemen:
et nunc numquid sine Domino ascendi ad terram istam, ut disperderem eam?do I intend to go up against this land to destroy it without the Lord?Dominus dixit ad me:But the Lord said to me,Ascende super terram istam,‘Go up against this land,et disperde eam.and destroy it.’”
Et dixit Eliacim,And Eliakim,et Sobna, and Shebna,et Joahe, ad Rabsacen:and Joah said to Rabshakeh:Loquere ad servos tuos syra lingua;“Speak to your servants in the Syrian language.intelligimus enim; For we understand it.ne loquaris ad nos judaice in auribus populi qui est super murum.Do not speak to us in the Jewish language, in the hearing of the people, who are upon the wall.”
Et dixit ad eos Rabsaces:And Rabshakeh said to them:Numquid ad dominum tuum et ad te misit me dominus meus,“Has my lord sent me to your lordut loquerer omnia verba ista?and to you in order to speak all these words,et non potius ad viros qui sedent in muro, and not even more so to the men who are sitting on the wall,ut comedant stercora sua,so that they may eat their own dunget bibant urinam pedum suorum vobiscum?and drink their own urine with you?”
Et stetit Rabsaces,Then Rabshakeh stood up,et clamavit voce magna judaice, and he cried out with a loud voice in the Jewish language,et dixit:and he said:Audite verba regis magni,“Listen to the words of the great king, regis Assyriorum!the king of the Assyrians.
Hæc dicit rex:Thus says the king:Non seducat vos Ezechias,Do not let Hezekiah deceive you.quia non poterit eruere vos.For he will not be able to rescue you.
Et non vobis tribuat fiduciam Ezechias super Domino,And do not let Hezekiah cause you to trust in the Lord, dicens:saying:Eruens liberabit nos Dominus:‘The Lord will rescue and free us.non dabitur civitas ista in manu regis Assyriorum. This city will not be given into the hands of the king of the Assyrians.’
Nolite audire Ezechiam;Do not listen to Hezekiah.hæc enim dicit rex Assyriorum:For the king of the Assyrians says this:Facite mecum benedictionem,Act with me to your own benefit,et egredimini ad me,and come out to me.et comedite unusquisque vineam suam,And let each one eat from his own vine,et unusquisque ficum suam, and each one from his own fig tree.et bibite unusquisque aquam cisternæ suæ,And let each one drink water from his own well,
donec veniam, et tollam vos ad terram quæ est ut terra vestra, until I arrive and take you away to a land which is like your own:terram frumenti et vini,a land of grain and of wine, terram panum et vinearum.a land of bread and of vineyards.
Nec conturbet vos Ezechias,But you should not let Hezekiah disturb you, dicens:saying,Dominus liberabit nos.‘The Lord will deliver us.’Numquid liberaverunt dii gentium unusquisque terram suam de manu regis Assyriorum?Have any of the gods of each of the nations delivered their land from the hand of the king of the Assyrians?
Ubi est deus Emath et Arphad?Where is the god of Hamath and of Arpad?ubi est deus Sepharvaim?Where is the god of Sepharvaim?numquid liberaverunt Samariam de manu mea?Have they freed Samaria from my hand?
Quis est ex omnibus diis terrarum istarum qui eruerit terram suam de manu mea,Who is there, among all the gods of these lands, who has rescued his land from my hand,ut eruat Dominus Jerusalem de manu mea?so that the Lord would rescue Jerusalem from my hand?”
Et siluerunt,And they remained silentet non responderunt ei verbum.and did not answer a word to him.Mandaverat enim rex,For the king had commanded them, dicens:saying,Ne respondeatis ei.“You shall not respond to him.”
Et ingressus est Eliacim,And Eliakim, son of Hilkiah, filius Helciæ, qui erat super domum, who was over the house, and Shebna,et Sobna scriba, the scribe, and Joah,et Joahe filius Asaph, son of Asaph, the historian,a commentariis, ad Ezechiam, scissis vestibus, entered to Hezekiah with their garments rent,et nuntiaverunt ei verba Rabsacis.and they reported to him the words of Rabshakeh.
