Hæc dicit Dominus:Thus says the Lord:Cælum sedes mea,Heaven is my throne, terra autem scabellum pedum meorum.and the earth is my footstool.Quæ est ista domus quam ædificabitis mihi? What is this house that you would build for me?et quis est iste locus quietis meæ?And what is this place of my rest?

Omnia hæc manus mea fecit,My hand has made all these things,et facta sunt universa ista, and all these things have been made, dicit Dominus;says the Lord.ad quem autem respiciam,But upon whom will I look with favor, nisi ad pauperculum, except upon a poor little one,et contritum spiritu, who is contrite in spirit,et trementem sermones meos?and who trembles at my words?

Qui immolat bovem,Whoever immolates an ox,quasi qui interficiat virum;it is as if he slaughters a man.qui mactat pecus,Whoever sacrifices a sheep, quasi qui excerebret canem;it is as if he is smashing the head of a dog.qui offert oblationem,Whoever offers an oblation, quasi qui sanguinem suillum offerat; qui recordatur thuris,it is as if he is offering swine’s blood. Whoever makes remembrance with incense, quasi qui benedicat idolo.it is as if he is blessing an idol.Hæc omnia elegerunt in viis suis,All these things, they have chosen according to their own ways,et in abominationibus suis anima eorum delectata est.and their soul has taken delight in their own abominations.

Unde et ego eligam illusiones eorum,Therefore, I also will choose their illusions,et quæ timebant adducam eis; quia vocavi, and I will lead over them the things that they feared. For I called,et non erat qui responderet;and there was no one who would respond.locutus sum,I have spoken,et non audierunt;and they have not listened.feceruntque malum in oculis meis,And they have done evil in my eyes;et quæ nolui elegerunt.and what I did not will, they have chosen.

Audite verbum Domini,Listen to the word of the Lord, qui tremitis ad verbum ejus.you who tremble at his word. Your brothers,Dixerunt fratres vestri odientes vos, et abjicientes propter nomen meum:who hate you and who cast you out because of my name, have said:Glorificetur Dominus,“Let the Lord be glorified,et videbimus in lætitia vestra;and we will see by your rejoicing.”ipsi autem confundentur. But they themselves will be confounded.

Vox populi de civitate,A voice of the people from the city!vox de templo,A voice from the temple!vox Domini reddentis retributionem inimicis suis. The voice of the Lord repaying retribution to his enemies!

Antequam parturiret,Before she was in labor, peperit;she gave birth.antequam veniret partus ejus,Before her time arrived for delivery, peperit masculum.she gave birth to a male child.

Quis audivit umquam tale?Who has ever heard of such a thing?et quis vidit huic simile? And who has seen anything like this?numquid parturiet terra in die una,Will the earth give birth in one day?aut parietur gens simul,Or will a nation be born all at once?quia parturivitFor Zion has been in labor,et peperit Sion filios suos?and she has given birth to her sons.

Numquid ego qui alios parere facio,Will I, who causes others to give birth, ipse non pariam?not also give birth myself, dicit Dominus.says the Lord?Si ego,Will I,qui generationem ceteris tribuo, who bestows generation upon others, sterilis ero?be barren myself, ait Dominus Deus tuus.says the Lord your God?

Lætamini cum JerusalemRejoice with Jerusalem,et exsultate in ea,and exult in her, omnes qui diligitis eam;all you who love her!gaudete cum ea gaudio,Rejoice greatly with her, universi qui lugetis super eam:all you who mourn over her!

ut sugatisSo may you nurse and be filled,et repleamini ab ubere consolationis ejus;from the breasts of her consolations.ut mulgeatisSo may you receive milk and overflow with delights,et deliciis affluatis ab omnimoda gloria ejus.from every portion of her glory.

Quia hæc dicit Dominus:For thus says the Lord: Behold,Ecce ego declinabo super eam quasi fluvium pacis,I will turn a river of peace toward her, with an inundating torrent:et quasi torrentem inundantem gloriam gentium, the glory of the Gentiles, from which you will nurse.quam sugetis: ad ubera portabimini,You will be carried at the breasts,et super genua blandientur vobis.and they will caress you upon the knees.

Quomodo si cui mater blandiatur,In the manner of one whom a mother caresses, ita ego consolabor vos,so will I console you.et in Jerusalem consolabimini. And you will be consoled in Jerusalem.

Videbitis,You will see,et gaudebit cor vestrum, and your heart will be glad,et ossa vestra quasi herba germinabunt:and your bones will flourish like a plant,et cognoscetur manus Domini servis ejus, and the hand of the Lord will be known to his servants,et indignabitur inimicis suis.and he will be angry with his enemies.

Quia ecce Dominus in igne veniet,For behold, the Lord will arrive with fire,et quasi turbo quadrigæ ejus, and his four-horse chariots will be like a whirlwind:reddere in indignatione furorem suum et increpationem suam in flamma ignis:to render his wrath with indignation, and his rebuke with flames of fire.

quia in igne Dominus dijudicabit,For the Lord will divide with fire,et in gladio suo ad omnem carnem;and with his sword among all flesh,et multiplicabuntur interfecti a Domino, and those slain by the Lord will be many.

qui sanctificabanturThose who were sanctified,et mundos se putabant in hortis post januam intrinsecus, who thought themselves to be clean in the gardens behind the inner gate, qui comedebant carnem suillam, who were eating swine’s flesh,et abominationemand the abomination,et murem:and the mouse:simul consumentur, they will be consumed all at once, dicit Dominus.says the Lord.

Ego autem opera eorum et cogitationes eorum venio ut congregem,But I know their works and their thoughts. I am arriving, cum omnibus gentibus et linguis:so that I may gather them together with all nations and languages.et venient, et videbunt gloriam meam. And they will approach, and they will see my glory.

Et ponam in eis signum,And I will set a sign among them.et mittam ex eis qui salvati fuerint, ad gentes in mare, in Africam,And I will send some of those who will have been saved to the Gentiles in the sea,et Lydiam,to Africa, tendentes sagittam; in Italiam et Græciam, and to those who draw the bow in Lydia, to Italy and Greece,ad insulas longe,to islands far away,ad eos qui non audierunt de me,to those who have not heard of me,et non viderunt gloriam meam.and to those who have not seen my glory.Et annuntiabunt gloriam meam gentibus; And they will announce my glory to the Gentiles.

et adducent omnes fratres vestros de cunctis gentibus donum Domino,And they will lead all of your brothers from all of the Gentiles as a gift to the Lord,in equis,on horses,et in quadrigis, and in four-horse chariots,et in lecticis, and on stretchers,et in mulis, and on mules,et in carrucis, and in coaches,ad montem sanctum meum Jerusalem,to my holy mountain Jerusalem, dicit Dominus:says the Lord, quomodo si inferant filii Israël munus in vase mundo in domum Domini.in the same manner that the sons of Israel would carry an offering in a pure vessel into the house of the Lord.

Et assumam ex eis in sacerdotes et Levitas,And I will take from them to be priests and Levites, dicit Dominus.says the Lord.

Quia sicut cæli novi et terra nova,For in like manner as the new heavens and the new earth,quæ ego facio stare coram me,which I will cause to stand before me,dicit Dominus, says the Lord, sic stabit semen vestrum et nomen vestrum.so will your offspring and your name stand.

Et erit mensis ex mense,And there will be month after month,et sabbatum ex sabbato:and Sabbath after Sabbath.veniet omnis caro ut adoret coram facie mea,And all flesh will approach, so as to adore before my face, dicit Dominus.says the Lord.

Et egredientur,And they will go out,et videbunt cadavera virorum qui prævaricati sunt in me;and they will view the carcasses of the men who have transgressed against me.vermis eorum non morietur,Their worm will not die,et ignis eorum non extinguetur:and their fire will not be extinguished.et erunt usque ad satietatem visionis omni carni. And they will be a sight to all flesh even unto revulsion.
