Et factum est verbum Domini ad me,And the word of the Lord came to me,dicens:saying:
Vade,“Go,et clama in auribus Jerusalem, and cry out to the ears of Jerusalem, dicens:saying:Hæc dicit Dominus:Thus says the Lord:Recordatus sum tui,I have remembered you, miserans adolescentiam tuam, taking pity on your youthet caritatem desponsationis tuæ,and on the charity of your betrothal, quando secuta es me in deserto, when you followed me into the desert,in terra quæ non seminatur.into a land which is not sown.
Sanctus Israël Domino,Israel is holy to the Lord, primitiæ frugum ejus:the first of his fruits.omnes qui devorant eum delinquunt:All those who devour him commit an offense.mala venient super eos,Evils will overwhelm them, dicit Dominus.says the Lord.”
Audite verbum Domini,Listen to the word of the Lord, domus Jacob,O house of Jacob,et omnes cognationes domus Israël.and all you families of the house of Israel.
Hæc dicit Dominus:Thus says the Lord:Quid invenerunt patres vestri in me iniquitatis,“What iniquity have your fathers found in me,quia elongaverunt a me,that they would draw far away from me,et ambulaverunt post vanitatem, and would walk after emptiness,et vani facti sunt?and would become empty?
Et non dixerunt:And they have not said:Ubi est Dominus qui ascendere nos fecit de terra Ægypti;‘Where is the Lord, who caused us to ascend from the land of Egypt;qui traduxit nos per desertum, who led us through the desert, per terram inhabitabilem et inviam, through an uninhabited and impassable land, per terram sitis, et imaginem mortis, through a land of drought and of the image of death, per terram in qua non ambulavit vir, neque habitavit homo?through a land in which no one walked and in which no man lived?’
Et induxi vos in terram Carmeli,And I led you into the land of Carmel,ut comederetis fructum ejusso that you would eat from its fruit and from its excellence.et optima illius:And having entered it,et ingressi contaminastis terram meam, you defiled my land,et hæreditatem meam posuistis in abominationem.and you turned my inheritance into an abomination.
Sacerdotes non dixerunt:The priests have not said:Ubi est Dominus?‘Where is the Lord?’et tenentes legem nescierunt me,And those who held the law did not know me.et pastores prævaricati sunt in me,And the pastors betrayed me.et prophetæ prophetaverunt in Baal,And the prophets prophesied in Baalet idola secuti sunt.and followed idols.
Propterea adhuc judicio contendam vobiscum,Because of this, I will still contend in judgment against you,ait Dominus, says the Lord,et cum filiis vestris disceptabo.and I will dispute with your sons.
Transite ad insulas Cethim,Cross over to the isles of Kittim,et videte:and gaze.et in Cedar mittite,And send to Kedar,et considerate vehementer:and consider diligently.et videte si factum est hujuscemodi:And see if anything like this has ever been done.
si mutavit gens deos suos,See if a nation has ever changed their gods,et certe ipsi non sunt dii:though certainly those are not gods.populus vero meus mutavit gloriam suam in idolum.Yet truly, my people have exchanged their glory for an idol.
Obstupescite, cæli,Be astonished at this, super hoc,O heavens,et portæ ejus, desolamini vehementer, and be utterly desolate, O gates of heaven, dicit Dominus.says the Lord.
Duo enim mala fecit populus meus:For my people have done two evils.me dereliquerunt fontem aquæ vivæ,They have forsaken me,et foderunt sibi cisternas, the Fountain of living water, cisternas dissipatas, and they have dug for themselves cisterns, quia continere non valent aquas.broken cisterns that are unable to hold water.
Numquid servus est Israël,Is Israel a servant, aut vernaculus?or one born into slavery?quare ergo factus est in prædam? Then why has he become a prey?
Super eum rugierunt leones,The lions have roared over him,et dederunt vocem suam:and they have uttered their voice.posuerunt terram ejus in solitudinem. They have set his land in solitude;Civitates ejus exustæ sunt, his cities have been burned up,et non est qui habitet in eis.and there is no one who lives in them.
Filii quoque Mempheos et Taphnes constupraverunt te usque ad verticem.Likewise, the sons of Memphis and of Tahpanhes have defiled you, even to the top of the head.
Numquid non istud factum est tibi,Has this not been done to you because you abandoned the Lord your God,quia dereliquisti Dominum Deum tuum eo tempore quo ducebat te per viam?in that time when he was leading you by the way?
Et nunc quid tibi vis in via Ægypti,And now what do you want from the way of Egypt,ut bibas aquam turbidam?but to drink their turbid water?et quid tibi cum via Assyriorum,And what do you want from the way of the Assyrians,ut bibas aquam fluminis?but to drink the water of their river?
Arguet te malitia tua,Your own malice will reprove you,et aversio tua increpabit te.and your own apostasy will rebuke you!ScitoBut know and perceive this:et vide quia malumit is an evil and bitter thing for you to forsake the Lord your God,et amarum est reliquisse te Dominum Deum tuum, and to be without my fear within you,et non esse timorem mei apud te,says the Lord, dicit Dominus Deus exercituum.the God of hosts.
A sæculo confregisti jugum meum:From ancient times, you have broken my yoke;rupisti vincula mea,you have torn apart my bonds,et dixisti:and you have said,Non serviam. In omni enim colle sublimi,‘I will not serve.’ For on every high hill,et sub omni ligno frondoso, and under every leafy tree,tu prosternebaris meretrix.you have been debased, O harlot.
Ego autem plantavi te vineam electam,Yet I planted you as an elect vineyard, with only true seed.omne semen verum: quomodo ergo conversa es mihi in pravum,Then how have you been turned away from me, toward that which is depraved, vinea aliena?O strange vineyard?
Si laveris te nitro,Even if you wash yourself with soap,et multiplicaveris tibi herbam borith, and increase your use of herbal soaps, maculata es in iniquitate tua coram me,you are still stained by your iniquity in my sight, dicit Dominus Deus.says the Lord God.
Quomodo dicis:How can you say:Non sum polluta;‘I have not been polluted.post Baalim non ambulavi?I have not walked after Baal?’Vide vias tuas in convalle;Consider your ways in the steep valley.scito quid feceris:Acknowledge what you have done, cursor levis explicans vias suas.so that you may be like a swift runner, following his course.
Onager assuetus in solitudine,A wild donkey accustomed to solitude,in desiderio animæ suæ attraxit ventum amoris sui:out of the desire in his soul, caught the scent of his lover.nullus avertet eam: omnes qui quærunt eam non deficient:Now nothing will turn him away from her. All those who seek her will not cease.in menstruis ejus invenient eam.But they will find her in her menstruation.
Prohibe pedem tuum a nuditate,You should keep your foot from being naked,et guttur tuum a siti.and your throat from being thirsty.Et dixisti:But you have said:Desperavi: nequaquam faciam:‘I have lost hope. I will not do it.adamavi quippe alienos,For certainly, I have loved strangers,et post eos ambulabo.and I will walk after them.’
Quomodo confunditur fur quando deprehenditur,In the same way that a thief is confounded when he has been apprehended, sic confusi sunt domus Israël,so the house of Israel has been confounded, ipsi et reges eorum, they and their kings, principes, et sacerdotes, et prophetæ eorum, their leaders and priests and prophets.
dicentes ligno:For they say to a piece of wood,Pater meus es tu:‘You are my father,’et lapidi:and to a stone,Tu me genuisti.‘You have conceived me.’Verterunt ad me tergumThey have turned their back to me,et non faciem, and not their face.et in tempore afflictionis suæ dicent:But in the time of their affliction,Surge, they will say:et libera nos.‘Rise up and deliver us.’
Ubi sunt dii tui quos fecisti tibi?Where are your gods that you made for yourselves?surgant,Let them rise up and deliver you in the time of your affliction.et liberent te in tempore afflictionis tuæ:For certainly, secundum numerum quippe civitatum tuarum erant dii tui, your gods were like the number of your cities,Juda.O Judah.
Quid vultis mecum judicio contendere? Why do you want to contend against me in judgment?omnes dereliquistis me,You have all forsaken me,dicit Dominus.says the Lord.
Frustra percussi filios vestros:I have struck your children to no effect;disciplinam non receperunt.they have not accepted discipline.Devoravit gladius vester prophetas vestros:Your own sword has devoured your prophets.quasi leo vastatorYour generation is like a raging lion.
generatio vestra. Videte verbum Domini:Consider the word of the Lord.numquid solitudo factus sum Israëli,Have I become like a wilderness to Israel, aut terra serotina?or like a land late to bear fruit?quare ergo dixit populus meus: Recessimus; Then why have my people said, ‘We are withdrawing;non veniemus ultra ad te?we will no longer approach you’?
Numquid obliviscetur virgo ornamenti sui, aut sponsa fasciæ pectoralis suæ?Can a virgin forget her ornament, or a bride the covering across her breast?populus vero meus oblitus est mei diebus innumeris.Yet truly, my people have forgotten me, for innumerable days.
Quid niteris bonam ostendere viam tuam ad quærendam dilectionem,Why are you striving to claim that your way is good,quæ insuperas if to seek my love,et malitias tuas docuisti vias tuas, when all the while you are also displaying your malice by your own way,
et in alis tuis inventus est sanguis animarum pauperumand in your armpits there is found the blood of poor and innocent souls?et innocentum?I have found them, non in fossis inveni eos,not in ditches, sed in omnibus quæ supra memoravi.but everywhere that I mentioned previously.
Et dixisti:And you have said:Absque peccato et innocens ego sum,‘I am innocent and without sin. And because of this,et propterea avertatur furor tuus a me.let your fury be turned away from me.’Ecce ego judicio contendam tecum,Behold, I will contend with you in judgment,eo quod dixeris:because you have said:Non peccavi.‘I have not sinned.’
Quam vilis facta es nimis,How exceedingly vile you have become, iterans vias tuas!repeating your ways again and again!et ab Ægypto confunderis,And so, you will be ashamed of Egypt, sicut confusa es ab Assur.just as you were ashamed of Assur.
Nam et ab ista egredieris,For you will also depart from that place,et manus tuæ erunt super caput tuum:and your hand will be upon your head.quoniam obtrivit Dominus confidentiam tuam,For the Lord has crushed your confidence,et nihil habebis prosperum in ea.and you will have nothing prosperous by it.”
