Amen,“Amen, amen dico vobis:amen, qui non intrat per ostium in ovile ovium,I say to you,sed ascendit aliunde,he who does not enter through the door into the fold of the sheep, ille fur estbut climbs up by another way,et latro.he is a thief and a robber.
Qui autem intrat per ostium, pastor est ovium. But he who enters through the door is the shepherd of the sheep.
Huic ostiarius aperit,To him the doorkeeper opens,et oves vocem ejus audiunt, and the sheep hear his voice,et proprias oves vocat nominatim, and he calls his own sheep by name,et educit eas.and he leads them out.
Et cum proprias oves emiserit,And when he has sent out his sheep, ante eas vadit:he goes before them,et oves illum sequuntur, and the sheep follow him, quia sciunt vocem ejus.because they know his voice.
Alienum autem non sequuntur,But they do not follow a stranger;sed fugiunt ab eo:instead they flee from him, quia non noverunt vocem alienorum.because they do not know the voice of strangers.”
Hoc proverbium dixit eis Jesus:Jesus spoke this proverb to them.illi autem non cognoverunt quid loqueretur eis.But they did not understand what he was saying to them.
Dixit ergo eis iterum Jesus:Therefore, Jesus spoke to them again:Amen,“Amen, amen dico vobis, amen, I say to you, quia ego sum ostium ovium.that I am the door of the sheep.
Omnes quotquot venerunt,All others, fures sunt,as many as have come,et latrones, are thieves and robbers,et non audierunt eos oves.and the sheep did not listen to them.
Ego sum ostium.I am the door.Per me si quis introierit,If anyone has entered through me,salvabitur:he will be saved.et ingredietur,And he shall go inet egredietur, and go out,et pascua inveniet.and he shall find pastures.
Fur non venit nisi ut furetur, et mactet,The thief does not come, except so that he may steal and slaughter and destroy.et perdat. Ego veni ut vitam habeant,I have come so that they may have life,et abundantius habeant.and have it more abundantly.
Ego sum pastor bonus.I am the good Shepherd.Bonus pastor animam suam dat pro ovibus suis. The good Shepherd gives his life for his sheep.
Mercenarius autem,But the hired hand,et qui non est pastor, and whoever is not a shepherd, cujus non sunt oves propriæ,to whom the sheep do not belong, videt lupum venientem,he sees the wolf approaching,et dimittit oves, and he departs from the sheepet fugit:and flees.et lupus rapit,And the wolf ravageset dispergit oves;and scatters the sheep.
mercenarius autem fugit,And the hired hand flees, quia mercenarius est, because he is a hired handet non pertinet ad eum de ovibus.and there is no concern for the sheep within him.
Ego sum pastor bonus:I am the good Shepherd,et cognosco meas, and I know my own,et cognoscunt me meæ.and my own know me,
Sicut novit me Pater, just as the Father knows me,et ego agnosco Patrem:and I know the Father.et animam meam pono pro ovibus meis. And I lay down my life for my sheep.
Et alias oves habeo,And I have other sheep that are not of this fold,quæ non sunt ex hoc ovili:and I must lead them.et illas oportet me adducere,They shall hear my voice,et vocem meam audient, and there shall be one sheepfoldet fiet unum ovile et unus pastor.and one shepherd.
Propterea me diligit Pater:For this reason, the Father loves me:quia ego pono animam meam, ut iterum sumam eam.because I lay down my life, so that I may take it up again.
Nemo tollit eam a me:No one takes it away from me.sed ego pono eam a meipso,Instead, I lay it down of my own accord.et potestatem habeo ponendi eam,And I have the power to lay it down.et potestatem habeo iterum sumendi eam. Hoc mandatum accepi a Patre meo.And I have the power to take it up again. This is the commandment that I have received from my Father.”
Dissensio iterum facta est inter Judæos propter sermones hos.A dissension occurred again among the Jews because of these words.
Dicebant autem multi ex ipsis:Then many of them were saying:Dæmonium habet,“He has a demonet insanit:or he is insane.quid eum auditis? Why do you listen him?”
Alii dicebant:Others were saying:Hæc verba non sunt dæmonium habentis:“These are not the words of someone who has a demon.numquid dæmonium potest cæcorum oculos aperire? How would a demon be able to open the eyes of the blind?”
Facta sunt autem Encænia in Jerosolymis,Now it was the Feast of the Dedication at Jerusalem,et hiems erat.and it was winter.
Et ambulabat Jesus in templo,And Jesus was walking in the temple,in porticu Salomonis.in the portico of Solomon.
Circumdederunt ergo eum Judæi,And so the Jews surrounded himet dicebant ei:and said to him:Quousque animam nostram tollis?“How long will you hold our souls in suspense?si tu es Christus,If you are the Christ, dic nobis palam.tell us plainly.”
Respondit eis Jesus:Jesus answered them:Loquor vobis,“I speak to you,et non creditis:and you do not believe.opera quæ ego facio in nomine Patris mei,The works that I do in the name of my Father,hæc testimonium perhibent de me:these offer testimony about me.
sed vos non creditis,But you do not believe, quia non estis ex ovibus meis.because you are not of my sheep.
Oves meæ vocem meam audiunt,My sheep hear my voice.et ego cognosco eas,And I know them,et sequuntur me:and they follow me.
et ego vitam æternam do eis,And I give them eternal life,et non peribunt in æternum, and they shall not perish, for eternity.et non rapiet eas quisquam de manu mea.And no one shall seize them from my hand.
Pater meus quod dedit mihi, majus omnibus est:What my Father gave to me is greater than all,et nemo potest rapere de manu Patris mei.and no one is able to seize from the hand of my Father.
Ego et Pater unum sumus.I and the Father are one.”
Sustulerunt ergo lapides Judæi,Therefore, the Jews took up stones,ut lapidarent eum.in order to stone him.
Respondit eis Jesus:Jesus answered them:Multa bona opera ostendi vobis ex Patre meo:“I have shown you many good works from my Father.propter quod eorum opus me lapidatis? For which of those works do you stone me?”
Responderunt ei Judæi:The Jews answered him:De bono opere non lapidamus te,“We do not stone you for a good work, sed de blasphemia;but for blasphemy and because,et quia tu homo cum sis, though you are a man, facis teipsum Deum.you make yourself God.”
Respondit eis Jesus:Jesus responded to them:Nonne scriptum est in lege vestra,“Is it not written in your law,Quia ego dixi:‘I said:Dii estis?you are gods?’
Si illos dixit deos, ad quos sermo Dei factus est,If he called those to whom the word of God was given gods,et non potest solvi Scriptura:and Scripture cannot be broken,
quem Pater sanctificavit, why do you say,et misit in mundum vos dicitis:about him whom the Father has sanctified and sent into the world,Quia blasphemas,‘You have blasphemed,’quia dixi:because I said,Filius Dei sum?‘I am the Son of God?’
Si non facio opera Patris mei,If I do not do the works of my Father, nolite credere mihi.do not believe in me.
Si autem facio:But if I do them, etsi mihi non vultis credere, even if you are not willing to believe in me,operibus credite, believe the works,ut cognoscatis,so that you may knowet credatis quia Pater in me est,and believe that the Father is in me,et ego in Patre.and I am in the Father.”
Quærebant ergo eum apprehendere:Therefore, they sought to apprehend him,et exivit de manibus eorum.but he escaped from their hands.
Et abiit iterum trans Jordanem,And he went again across the Jordan,in eum locum ubi erat Joannes baptizans primum,to that place where John first was baptizing.et mansit illic; And he lodged there.
et multi venerunt ad eum, et dicebant:And many went out to him. And they were saying:Quia Joannes quidem signum fecit nullum.“Indeed, John accomplished no signs.
Omnia autem quæcumque dixit Joannes de hoc, vera erant. But all things whatsoever that John said about this man were true.”Et multi crediderunt in eum.And many believed in him.
