Carissimi,Most beloved, nolite omni spiritui credere,do not be willing to believe every spirit, sed probate spiritus si ex Deo sint:but test the spirits to see if they are of God.quoniam multi pseudoprophetæ exierunt in mundum. For many false prophets have gone out into the world.

In hoc cognoscitur Spiritus Dei:The Spirit of God may be known in this way.omnis spiritus qui confitetur Jesum Christum in carne venisse, ex Deo est:Every spirit who confesses that Jesus Christ has arrived in the flesh is of God;

et omnis spiritus qui solvit Jesum, ex Deo non est,and every spirit who contradicts Jesus is not of God.et hic est antichristus,And this one is the Antichrist,de quo audistis quoniam venit, the one that you have heard is coming,et nunc jam in mundo est.and even now he is in the world.

Vos ex Deo estis filioli,Little sons,et vicistis eum,you are of God,quoniam major est qui in vobis est,and so you have overcome him.quam qui in mundo. For he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.

Ipsi de mundo sunt:They are of the world.ideo de mundo loquuntur,Therefore, they speak about the world,et mundus eos audit.and the world listens to them.

Nos ex Deo sumus. We are of God.Qui novit Deum,Whoever knows God,audit nos;listens to us.qui non est ex Deo,Whoever is not of God,non audit nos:does not listen to us.in hoc cognoscimus Spiritum veritatis,In this way,et spiritum erroris.we know the Spirit of truth from the spirit of error.

Carissimi,Most beloved, diligamus nos invicem:let us love one another.quia caritas ex Deo est.For love is of God.Et omnis qui diligit, ex Deo natus est, et cognoscit Deum. And everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.

Qui non diligit,Whoever does not love, non novit Deum:does not know God.quoniam Deus caritas est.For God is love.

In hoc apparuit caritas Dei in nobis,The love of God was made apparent to us in this way:quoniam Filium suum unigenitum misit Deus in mundum, that God sent his only-begotten Son into the world,ut vivamus per eum.so that we might live through him.

In hoc est caritas:In this is love:non quasi nos dilexerimus Deum, not as if we had loved God,sed quoniam ipse prior dilexit nos,but that he first loved us,et misit Filium suum propitiationem pro peccatis nostris.and so he sent his Son as a propitiation for our sins.

Carissimi,Most beloved,si sic Deus dilexit nos:if God has so loved us,et nos debemus alterutrum diligere.we also ought to love one another.

Deum nemo vidit umquam. No one has ever seen God.Si diligamus invicem,But if we love one another,Deus in nobis manet,God abides in us,et caritas ejus in nobis perfecta est.and his love is perfected in us.

In hoc cognoscimus quoniam in eo manemus,In this way, we know that we abide in him,et ipse in nobis: quoniam de Spiritu suo dedit nobis.and he in us: because he has given to us from his Spirit.

Et nos vidimus,And we have seen,et testificamur quoniam Pater misit Filium suum Salvatorem mundi.and we testify, that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world.

Quisquis confessus fuerit quoniam Jesus est Filius Dei,Whoever has confessed that Jesus is the Son of God,Deus in eo manet,God abides in him,et ipse in Deo.and he in God.

Et nos cognovimus, et credidimus caritati, quam habet Deus in nobis. And we have known and believed the love that God has for us.Deus caritas est:God is love.et qui manet in caritate,And he who abides in love,in Deo manet, abides in God,et Deus in eo.and God in him.

In hoc perfecta est caritas Dei nobiscum,In this way, the love of God is perfected with us,ut fiduciam habeamus in die judicii: quia sicut ille est,so that we may have confidence on the day of judgment. For as he is,et nos sumus in hoc mundo.so also are we, in this world.

Timor non est in caritate:Fear is not in love.sed perfecta caritas foras mittit timorem,Instead, quoniam timor pœnam habet:perfect love casts out fear, qui autem timet, for fear pertains to punishment.non est perfectus in caritate. And whoever fears is not perfected in love.

Nos ergo diligamus Deum,Therefore, let us love God,quoniam Deus prior dilexit nos.for God first loved us.

Si quis dixerit: Quoniam diligo Deum,If anyone says that he loves God,et fratrem suum oderit, mendax est.but hates his brother, then he is a liar.Qui enim non diligit fratrem suum quem vidit, Deum,For he who does not love his brother, whom he does see, quem non vidit, quomodo potest diligere?in what way can he love God, whom he does not see?

Et hoc mandatum habemus a Deo:And this is the commandment that we have from God,ut qui diligit Deum, diligat et fratrem suum.that he who loves God must also love his brother.
