Respondens autem Dominus Job de turbine,But the Lord, responding to Job from a whirlwind, dixit:said:
Quis est iste involvens sententias sermonibus imperitis?Who is this that wraps sentences in unskilled words?
Accinge sicut vir lumbos tuos:Gird your waist like a man.interrogabo te,I will question you,et responde mihi.and you must answer me.
Ubi eras quando ponebam fundamenta terræ? indica mihi,Where were you, when I set the foundations of the earth?si habes intelligentiam.Tell me, if you have understanding.
Quis posuit mensuras ejus,Who set its measurements,si nosti?if you know, vel quis tetendit super eam lineam?or who stretched a line over it?
Super quo bases illius solidatæ sunt?Upon what have its bases been grounded, aut quis demisit lapidem angularem ejus, and who set forth its cornerstone,
cum me laudarent simul astra matutina, when the morning stars praised me together,et jubilarent omnes filii Dei?and all the sons of God made a joyful noise?
Quis conclusit ostiis mare,Who enclosed the sea with doors, quando erumpebat quasi de vulva procedens;when it broke forth as if issuing from the womb,
cum ponerem nubem vestimentum ejus, when I stationed a cloud as its garmentet caligine illud quasi pannis infantiæ obvolverem?and wrapped it in a mist as if swaddling an infant?
Circumdedi illud terminis meis,I encircled it with my limits,et posui vectem et ostia, and I positioned its bars and doors.
et dixi:And I said:Usque huc venies,“This far you will approach,et non procedes amplius, and you will proceed no further,et hic confringes tumentes fluctus tuos.and here you will break your swelling waves.”
Numquid post ortum tuum præcepisti diluculo, et ostendisti auroræ locum suum?Did you, after your birth, command the birth of the sun and show the sunrise its place?
Et tenuisti concutiens extrema terræ,And did you hold the extremities of the earth, shaking them,et excussisti impios ex ea?and have you shaken the impious out of it?
Restituetur ut lutum signaculum,The seal will be restored like clay,et stabit sicut vestimentum:and it will remain in place like a garment.
auferetur ab impiis lux sua,From the impious, the light will be taken away,et brachium excelsum confringetur.and the exalted arm will be broken.
Numquid ingressus es profunda maris,Have you entered the depths of the sea,et in novissimis abyssi deambulasti?and have you taken a walk in the uttermost parts of the abyss?
Numquid apertæ sunt tibi portæ mortis,Have the gates of death been opened to you,et ostia tenebrosa vidisti?and have you seen the doors of darkness?
Numquid considerasti latitudinem terræ? indica mihi,Have you considered the breadth of the earth? If you know all things,si nosti, omnia:reveal them to me.
in qua via lux habitet,Which is the way that holds the light,et tenebrarum quis locus sit:and which is the place of darkness?
ut ducas unumquodque ad terminos suos,In this way, you might lead each thing to its final place,et intelligas semitas domus ejus.and understand the paths of its house.
Sciebas tunc quod nasciturus esses,So then, did you know when you were to be born?et numerum dierum tuorum noveras? And did you know the number of your days?
Numquid ingressus es thesauros nivis,Have you been admitted into the storehouses of the snows, aut thesauros grandinis aspexisti, and have you gazed upon the stockpile of the brimstone,
quæ præparavi in tempus hostis, which I have prepared for the time of the enemy,in diem pugnæ et belli?for the day of the battle and the war?
Per quam viam spargitur lux,In what way is the light scattered, dividitur æstus super terram?and the heat distributed, over the earth?
Quis dedit vehementissimo imbri cursum,Who gave a course to the rainstorms,et viam sonantis tonitrui, and a path to the resounding thunder,
ut plueret super terram absque homine in deserto,so that it would rain on the earth far from man,ubi nullus mortalium commoratur;in the wilderness where no mortal lingers,
ut impleret inviam et desolatam,so that it would fill impassable and desolate places,et produceret herbas virentes?and would bring forth green plants?
Quis est pluviæ pater?Who is the father of rain, vel quis genuit stillas roris?or who conceived the drops of dew?
De cujus utero egressa est glacies? From whose womb did the ice proceed,et gelu de cælo quis genuit?and who created the frost from the air?
In similitudinem lapidis aquæ durantur,The waters are hardened to become like stone,et superficies abyssi constringitur.and the surface of the abyss freezes over.
Numquid conjungere valebis micantes stellas Pleiadas,Will you have the strength to join together the sparkling stars of the Pleiades, aut gyrum Arcturi poteris dissipare?or are you able to disperse the circling of Arcturus?
Numquid producis luciferum in tempore suo,Can you bring forth the morning star, in its time,et vesperum super filios terræ consurgere facis?and make the evening star rise over the sons of the earth?
Numquid nosti ordinem cæli,Do you know the order of heaven,et pones rationem ejus in terra?and can you explain its rules here on the earth?
Numquid elevabis in nebula vocem tuam,Can you lift up your voice to the clouds,et impetus aquarum operiet te?so that an onslaught of waters will cover you?
Numquid mittes fulgura,Can you send forth lightning bolts,et ibunt, and will they go,et revertentia dicent tibi:and on returning, say to you:Adsumus?“Here we are?”
Quis posuit in visceribus hominis sapientiam?Who placed discernment in the guts of man,vel quis dedit gallo intelligentiam?or who gave the rooster intelligence?
Quis enarrabit cælorum rationem?Who can describe the rules of the heavens,et concentum cæli quis dormire faciet?or who can put to rest the harmony of heaven?
Quando fundebatur pulvis in terra,When was the dust cast to become the earth,et glebæ compingebantur?and when were its clods fastened together?
Numquid capies leænæ prædam,Will you seize prey for the lioness,et animam catulorum ejus implebis, and will you sustain the lives of her young,
quando cubant in antris,as they rest in their denset in specubus insidiantur?or lie in wait in pits?
Quis præparat corvo escam suam,Who provides the raven with its meal, quando pulli ejus clamant ad Deum, when her chicks cry out to God,vagantes, eo quod non habeant cibos?as they wander around because they have no food?
