Et factum est verbum Domini ad Jonam secundo,And the word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time, dicens:saying:

Surge,Rise,et vade in Niniven, and go to Nineveh, civitatem magnam, the great city.et prædica in ea prædicationem quam ego loquor ad te.And preach in it the preaching that I say to you.

Et surrexit Jonas, et abiit in Niniven juxta verbum Domini:And Jonah rose, and he went to Nineveh in accordance with the word of the Lord.et Ninive erat civitas magna, itinere trium dierum. And Nineveh was a great city of three days’ journey.

Et cœpit Jonas introire in civitatem itinere diei unius:And Jonah began to enter into the city one day’s journey.et clamavit,And he cried outet dixit:and said,Adhuc quadraginta dies,“Forty days moreet Ninive subvertetur.and Nineveh shall be destroyed.”

Et crediderunt viri Ninivitæ in Deum,And the men of Nineveh believed in God.et prædicaverunt jejunium,And they proclaimed a fast,et vestiti sunt saccis, and they put on sackcloth,a majore usque ad minorem.from the greatest all the way to the least.

Et pervenit verbum ad regem Ninive:And word reached the king of Nineveh.et surrexit de solio suo,And he rose from his throne,et abjecit vestimentum suum a se,and he threw off his robe from himselfet indutus est sacco, and was clothed in sackcloth,et sedit in cinere.and he sat in ashes.

Et clamavit,And he cried out and spoke:et dixit in Ninive ex ore regis et principum ejus,“In Nineveh, from the mouth of the king and of his princes, dicens: Homines, let it be said:et jumenta, et boves, et pecora non gustent quidquam:Men and beasts and oxen and sheep may not taste anything.nec pascantur, et aquam non bibant.Neither shall they feed or drink water.

Et operiantur saccis homines et jumenta,And let men and beasts be covered with sackcloth,et clament ad Dominum in fortitudine:and let them cry out to the Lord with strength,et convertatur vir a via sua mala, and may man be converted from his evil way,et ab iniquitate quæ est in manibus eorum.and from the iniquity that is in their hands.

Quis scit si convertatur et ignoscat Deus,Who knows if God may turn and forgive,et revertatur a furore iræ suæ,and may turn away from his furious wrath,et non peribimus?so that we might not perish?”

Et vidit Deus opera eorum, quia conversi sunt de via sua mala:And God saw their works, that they had been converted from their evil way.et misertus est Deus super malitiam quam locutus fuerat ut faceret eis,And God took pity on them, concerning the harm that he had said he would do to them,et non fecit.and he did not do it.
