Quæ cum audisset Adonisedec rex Jerusalem,When Adonizedek, the king of Jerusalem, had heard these things, quod scilicet cepisset Josue Hai,specifically, that Joshua had seized Ai,et subvertisset eam (sicut enim fecerat Jericho et regi ejus, and had overthrown it, (for just as he had done to Jericho and its king, sic fecit Hai et regi illius),so did he do to Ai and its king,)et quod transfugissent Gabaonitæ ad Israël,and that the Gibeonites had fled over to Israel,et essent fœderati eorum, and were now their confederates,
timuit valde.he was very afraid.Urbs enim magna erat Gabaon,For Gibeon was a great city,et una civitatum regalium, and was one of the royal cities,et major oppido Hai,and was greater than the town of Ai,omnesque bellatores ejus fortissimi.and all its warriors were very strong.
Misit ergo Adonisedec rex Jerusalem ad Oham regem Hebron,Therefore, Adonizedek, the king of Jerusalem,et ad Pharam regem Jerimoth, sent to Hoham, the king of Hebron, and to Piram,ad Japhia quoque regem Lachis, the king of Jarmuth, and also to Japhia, the king of Lachish,et ad Dabir regem Eglon, and to Debir, the king of Eglon, dicens:saying:
Ad me ascendite,“Ascend to me,et ferte præsidium, and bring troops,ut expugnemus Gabaon,so that we may fight against Gibeon.quare transfugerit ad Josue,For it has fled over to Joshuaet ad filios Israël.and the sons of Israel.”
Congregati igitur ascenderunt quinque reges Amorrhæorum:And so, having assembled, the five kings of the Amorites, rex Jerusalem, the king of Jerusalem, rex Hebron, the king of Hebron, rex Jerimoth, the king of Jarmuth, rex Lachis, the king of Lachish, rex Eglon, simul cum exercitibus suis:the king of Eglon, together with their armies,et castrametati sunt circa Gabaon, went up and encamped around Gibeon, oppugnantes eam.laying siege to it.
Habitatores autem Gabaon urbis obsessæ miserunt ad Josue,But the inhabitants of the city of Gibeon, when it was besieged, qui tunc morabatur in castris apud Galgalam, sent to Joshua, who was then staying in the camp at Gilgal.et dixerunt ei:And they said to him:Ne retrahas manus tuas ab auxilio servorum tuorum:“May you not draw back your hands from helping your servants.ascende cito,Come quickly,et libera nos,and free us,ferque præsidium:and bring troops.convenerunt enim adversum nos omnes reges Amorrhæorum,For all the kings of the Amorites, who live in the mountains, qui habitant in montanis.have gathered together against us.”
Ascenditque Josue de Galgalis,And Joshua ascended from Gilgal,et omnis exercitus bellatorum cum eo,and the entire army of warriors with him, viri fortissimi.very strong men.
Dixitque Dominus ad Josue:And the Lord said to Joshua:Ne timeas eos:“You should not fear them.in manus enim tuas tradidi illos:For I have delivered them into your hands.nullus ex eis tibi resistere poterit.None of them will be able to withstand you.”
Irruit itaque Josue super eos repente,And so Joshua, ascending from Gilgal throughout the night, tota nocte ascendens de Galgalis.rushed upon them suddenly.
Et conturbavit eos Dominus a facie Israël:And the Lord set them in disarray before the face of Israel.contrivitque plaga magna in Gabaon,And he crushed them in a great defeat at Gibeon,ac persecutus est eos per viam ascensus Bethoron, and he pursued them along the way of the ascent to Beth-horon,et percussit usque Azecaand he struck them down,et Maceda.even as far as Azekah and Makkedah.
Cumque fugerent filios Israël,And while they were fleeing from the sons of Israel,et essent in descensu Bethoron, and were on the descent of Beth-horon,Dominus misit super eos lapides magnos de cælo usque ad Azeca:the Lord cast great stones from heaven upon them, as far as Azekah.et mortui sunt multo plures lapidibus grandinis,And many more were killed by the hailstones, quam quos gladio percusserant filii Israël.than were struck down by the swords of the sons of Israel.
Tunc locutus est Josue Domino,Then Joshua spoke to the Lord,in die qua tradidit Amorrhæum in conspectu filiorum Israël,on the day that he handed over the Amorite in the sight of the sons of Israel, dixitque coram eis:and he said before them:Sol,“O sun, contra Gabaon ne movearis, you shall not move toward Gibeon! O moon,et luna contra vallem Ajalon.you shall not move toward the valley of Aijalon!”
Steteruntque sol et luna,And the sun and the moon stood still, donec ulcisceretur se gens de inimicis suis.until the people had avenged themselves of their enemies.Nonne scriptum est hoc in libro justorum?Has this not been written in the book of the just?Stetit itaque sol in medio cæli,And so the sun stood still in the midst of heaven,et non festinavit occumbere spatio unius diei.and it did not hurry to its rest for the space of one day.
Non fuit antea nec postea tam longa dies,Never before and never after was there so long a day, obediente Domino voci hominis,as when the Lord obeyed the voice of a man,et pugnante pro Israël.and fought for Israel.
Reversusque est Josue cum omni Israël in castra Galgalæ.And Joshua returned, with all of Israel, into the camp of Gilgal.
Fugerant enim quinque reges et se absconderant in spelunca urbis Maceda. For the five kings had fled, and had hidden themselves in a cave, near the city of Makkedah.
Nuntiatumque est Josue quod inventi essent quinque reges latentes in spelunca urbis Maceda. And it was reported to Joshua that the five kings had been found hidden in a cave, near the city of Makkedah.
Qui præcepit sociis, et ait:And he instructed his companions and said:Volvite saxa ingentia ad os speluncæ,“Roll vast stones to the mouth of the cave,et ponite viros industrios, qui clausos custodiant:and station attentive men who will keep them closed.
vos autem nolite stare,But as for you, do not stay here;sed persequimini hostes, instead, pursue the enemies,et extremos quosque fugientium cædite:and cut down the lattermost of those who are fleeing.nec dimittatis eos urbium suarum intrare præsidia, quos tradidit Dominus Deus in manus vestras. You shall not permit those whom the Lord God has delivered into your hands to enter into the protection of their cities.”
Cæsis ergo adversariis plaga magna,Thus, the adversaries were struck down in a great defeat,et usque ad internecionem pene consumptis, and having been nearly consumed, even to utter annihilation,hi qui Israël effugere potuerunt, ingressi sunt civitates munitas.those who were able to escape from Israel entered into fortified cities.
Reversusque est omnis exercitus ad Josue in Maceda,And the entire army returned to Joshua at Makkedah, ubi tunc erant castra, where they were then encamped, sani et integro numero:in good health and in their full numbers.nullusque contra filios Israël mutire ausus est.And no one dared to move his tongue against the sons of Israel.
Præcepitque Josue,And Joshua instructed, dicens:saying,Aperite os speluncæ,“Open the mouth of the cave,et producite ad me quinque reges, and bring forward to me the five kings, qui in ea latitant.who are hidden within it.”
Feceruntque ministri ut sibi fuerat imperatum:And the ministers did just as they had been ordered.et eduxerunt ad eum quinque reges de spelunca,And they led out to him the five kings from the cave:regem Jerusalem, the king of Jerusalem, regem Hebron, the king of Hebron, regem Jerimoth, the king of Jarmuth, regem Lachis, the king of Lachish, regem Eglon.the king of Eglon.
Cumque educti essent ad eum,And when they had been led out to him, vocavit omnes viros Israël,he called all the men of Israel,et ait ad principes exercitus qui secum erant:and he said to the leaders of the army who were with him,Ite,“Go,et ponite pedes super colla regum istorum.and place your feet upon the necks of these kings.”Qui cum perrexissent,And when they had goneet subjectorum colla pedibus calcarent, and had tread their feet upon the necks of those who were thrown down,
rursum ait ad eos:he spoke to them again:Nolite timere,“Do not be afraid, nec paveatis:and do not dread.confortamini,Be strengthenedet estote robusti:and be steadfast.sic enim faciet Dominus cunctis hostibus vestris,For so will the Lord do to all your enemies, adversum quos dimicatis.against whom you fight.”
Percussitque Josue,And Joshua struck them downet interfecit eos,and killed them, atque suspendit super quinque stipites:and he suspended them on five gallows.fueruntque suspensi usque ad vesperum. And they hung there until evening.
Cumque occumberet sol,And when the sun had set,præcepit sociis ut deponerent eos de patibulis.he instructed his assistants that they should take them down from the gallows.Qui depositos projecerunt in speluncam in qua latuerant,And having been taken down, they cast them into the cave,et posuerunt super os ejus saxa ingentia, where they had lain hidden, and they set vast stones at its mouth,quæ permanent usque in præsens.which remain, even to the present.
Eodem quoque die,Also on the same day,Macedam cepit Josue,Joshua seized Makkedah,et percussit eam in ore gladii, and he struck it with the edge of the sword, regemque illius interfecit, and he put to death its king and all its inhabitants.et omnes habitatores ejus:He did not leave in it even the smallest remains.non dimisit in ea saltem parvas reliquias. And he did to the king of Makkedah,Fecitque regi Maceda sicut fecerat regi Jericho.just as he had done to the king of Jericho.
Transivit autem cum omni Israël de Maceda in Lebna,Then he went on, with all of Israel, from Makkedah to Libnah,et pugnabat contra eam:and he fought against it.
quam tradidit Dominus cum rege suo in manus Israël:And the Lord delivered it, with its king, into the hands of Israel.percusseruntque urbem in ore gladii, et omnes habitatores ejus:And they struck the city with the edge of the sword, and all its inhabitants.non dimiserunt in ea ullas reliquias. They did not leave in it any remains.Feceruntque regi Lebna sicut fecerant regi Jericho. And they did to the king of Libnah, just as they had done to the king of Jericho.
De Lebna transivit in Lachis cum omni Israël:From Libnah, with all of Israel, he went on to Lachish.et exercitu per gyrum disposito,And taking positions around it with his army, oppugnabat eam.he besieged it.
Tradiditque Dominus Lachis in manus Israël,And the Lord delivered Lachish into the hands of Israel,et cepit eam die altero, and he seized it on the following day, atque percussit in ore gladii, and he struck it with the edge of the sword, omnemque animam quæ fuerat in ea,and every soul that was in it,sicut fecerat Lebna.just as he had done to Libnah.
Eo tempore ascendit Horam rex Gazer,At that time, Horam, the king of Gezer,ut auxiliaretur Lachis:went up so that he might assist Lachish.quem percussit Josue cum omni populo ejus usque ad internecionem. And Joshua struck him with all his people, even unto utter annihilation.
Transivitque de Lachis in Eglon,And he went on from Lachish to Eglon,et circumdedit, and he surrounded it.
atque expugnavit eam eadem die:And he also defeated it on the same day.percussitque in ore gladii omnes animas quæ erant in ea,And he struck all the souls that were in it with the edge of the sword, juxta omnia quæ fecerat Lachis.in accord with all that he had done to Lachish.
Ascendit quoque cum omni Israël de Eglon in Hebron,He also ascended, with all of Israel, from Eglon into Hebron,et pugnavit contra eam:and he fought against it.
cepit eam,He seized itet percussit in ore gladii, and struck it with the edge of the sword, regem quoque ejus, likewise with its king,et omnia oppida regionis illius, and all the towns of that region, universasque animas quæ in ea fuerant commoratæ:and all the souls that were staying in it.non reliquit in ea ullas reliquias:He did not leave any remains in it.sicut fecerat Eglon,Just as he had done to Eglon, sic fecit et Hebron,so also did he do to Hebron, cuncta quæ in ea reperit consumens gladio.consuming with the sword all that he found within it.
Inde reversus in Dabir,Returning from there to Debir,
cepit eam atque vastavit:he seized it and laid waste to it,regem quoque ejus atque omnia per circuitum oppida percussit in ore gladii:likewise with its king. And all the surrounding towns, he struck with the edge of the sword.non dimisit in ea ullas reliquias:He did not leave in it any remains.sicut fecerat Hebron et Lebna et regibus earum,Just as he had done to Hebron and Libnah, and to their kings, sic fecit Dabir et regi illius.so did he do to Debir and to its king.
Percussit itaque Josue omnem terram montanam et meridianam atque campestrem,And so Joshua struck the entire land, the mountains, and the south,et Asedoth, and the plains, cum regibus suis:and the descending slopes, non dimisit in ea ullas reliquias, with their kings. He did not leave in it any remains, sed omne quod spirare poterat interfecit, but he put to death all that was able to breathe, sicut præceperat ei Dominus Deus Israël,just as the Lord, the God of Israel, had instructed him,
a Cadesbarne usque Gazam.from Kadesh-barnea, as far as Gaza,Omnem terram Gosen usque Gabaon, with all the land of Goshen, as far as Gibeon.
universosque reges, et regiones eorum uno impetu cepit atque vastavit:And all their kings and their regions, he seized and destroyed with a single attack.Dominus enim Deus Israël pugnavit pro eo.For the Lord, the God of Israel, fought on his behalf.
Reversusque est cum omni Israël ad locum castrorum in Galgala. And he returned, with all of Israel, to the place of the encampment at Gilgal.
