Post Abimelech surrexit dux in Israël Thola filius Phua patrui Abimelech, vir de Issachar, qui habitavit in Samir montis Ephraim:After Abimelech, a leader rose up in Israel, Tola, the son of Puah, the paternal uncle of Abimelech, a man of Issachar, who lived in Shamir on mount Ephraim.
et judicavit Israëlem viginti et tribus annis,And he judged Israel for twenty-three years, mortuusque est,and he diedac sepultus in Samir.and was buried at Shamir.
Huic successit Jair Galaadites,After him succeeded Jair, qui judicavit Israël per vigintia Gileadite,et duos annos, who judged Israel for twenty-two years,
habens triginta filios sedentes super triginta pullos asinarum, having thirty sons sitting upon thirty young donkeys,et principes triginta civitatum, and who were leaders of thirty cities,quæ ex nomine ejus sunt appellatæ Havoth Jair, which from his name were called Havvoth Jair,id est, that is,oppida Jair, the towns of Jair, usque in præsentem diem, even to the present day,in terra Galaad.in the land of Gilead.
Mortuusque est Jair,And Jair died,ac sepultus in loco cui est vocabulum Camon.and he was buried in the place which is called Kamon.
Filii autem Israël peccatis veteribus jungentes nova,But the sons of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, fecerunt malum in conspectu Domini, joining new sins to old,et servierunt idolis, and they served idols,Baalim et Astaroth, the Baals and Ashtaroth,et diis Syriæ ac Sidonis et Moab et filiorum Ammon et Philisthiim:and the gods of Syria and Sidon, and of Moab and the sons of Ammon, and the Philistines.dimiseruntque Dominum,And they abandoned the Lord,et non coluerunt eum.and they did not worship him.
Contra quos Dominus iratus,And the Lord, tradidit eos in manus Philisthiimbecoming angry against them,et filiorum Ammon.delivered them into the hands of the Philistines and the sons of Ammon.
Afflictique sunt,And they were afflictedet vehementer oppressi per annos decem et octo, and vehemently oppressed for eighteen years, omnes qui habitabant trans Jordanem in terra Amorrhæi,all who were living beyond the Jordan in the land of the Amorite, qui est in Galaad:which is in Gilead,
in tantum ut filii Ammon,to such a great extent that the sons of Ammon,Jordane transmisso, crossing over the Jordan, vastarent Judam et Benjamin et Ephraim:laid waste to Judah and Benjamin and Ephraim.afflictusque est Israël nimis. And Israel was exceedingly afflicted.
Et clamantes ad Dominum,And crying out to the Lord, dixerunt:they said:Peccavimus tibi,“We have sinned against you.quia dereliquimus Dominum Deum nostrum,For we have forsaken the Lord our God,et servivimus Baalim.and we have served the Baals.”
Quibus locutus est Dominus:And the Lord said to them:Numquid non Ægyptii“Did not the Egyptians,et Amorrhæi,and the Amorites, filiique Ammonand the sons of Ammon,et Philisthiim, and the Philistines,
Sidonii quoque et Amalec et Chanaan oppresserunt vos,and also the Sidonians, and Amalek, and Canaan,et clamastis ad me,oppress you, and so you cried out to me,et erui vos de manu eorum?and I rescued you from their hand?
Et tamen reliquistis me,And yet you have forsaken me,et coluistis deos alienos:and you have worshipped foreign gods.idcirco non addam ut ultra vos liberem:For this reason, I will not continue to free you any more.
ite,Go,et invocate deos quos elegistis:and call upon the gods whom you have chosen.ipsi vos liberent in tempore angustiæ.Let them free you in the time of anguish.”
Dixeruntque filii Israël ad Dominum:And the sons of Israel said to the Lord:Peccavimus,“We have sinned.redde tu nobis quidquid tibi placet:You may repay us in whatever way pleases you.tantum nunc libera nos.Yet free us now.”
Quæ dicentes,And saying these things, omnia de finibus suis alienorum deorum idola projecerunt, they cast out all the idols of the foreign gods from their regions,et servierunt Domino Deo:and they served the Lord God.qui doluit super miseriis eorum. And he was touched by their miseries.
Itaque filii Ammon conclamantes in Galaad fixere tentoria,And then the sons of Ammon, shouting out together, pitched their tents in Gilead.contra quos congregati filii Israël in Maspha castrametati sunt. And the sons of Israel gathered together against them, and they made camp at Mizpah.
Dixeruntque principes Galaad singuli ad proximos suos:And the leaders of Gilead said to one another,Qui primus ex nobis contra filios Ammon cœperit dimicare,“Whoever among us will be the first to begin to contend against the sons of Ammon, erit dux populi Galaad.he shall be the leader of the people of Gilead.”
