Ecce autem in Ephraim orta est seditio:And behold, a sedition rose up in Ephraim.nam transeuntes contra aquilonem,Then, while passing by toward the north, dixerunt ad Jephte:they said to Jephthah:Quare vadens ad pugnam contra filios Ammon,“When you were going to fight against the sons of Ammon, vocare nos noluisti, why were you unwilling to summon us,ut pergeremus tecum?so that we might go with you?igitur incendemus domum tuam. Therefore, we will burn down your house.”

Quibus ille respondit:And he answered them:Disceptatio erat mihi et populo meo contra filios Ammon vehemens:“I and my people were in a great conflict against the sons of Ammon.vocavique vos,And I called you,ut præberetis mihi auxilium,so that you might offer assistance to me.et facere noluistis. And you were not willing to do so.

Quod cernens,And discerning this, posui animam meam in manibus meis,I put my life in my own hands, transivique ad filios Ammon, and I crossed to the sons of Ammon,et tradidit eos Dominus in manus meas.and the Lord delivered them into my hands.Quid commerui,What am I guilty of,ut adversum me consurgatis in prælium?that you would rise up in battle against me?”

Vocatis itaque ad se cunctis viris Galaad,And so,pugnabat contra Ephraim:calling to himself all the men of Gilead, percusseruntque viri Galaad Ephraim,he fought against Ephraim.quia dixerat:And the men of Gilead struck down Ephraim,Fugitivus est Galaad de Ephraim, because he had said,et habitat in medio Ephraim“Gilead is a fugitive from Ephraim,et Manasse.and he lives in the midst of Ephraim and Manasseh.”

Occupaveruntque Galaaditæ vada Jordanis,And the Gileadites occupied the fords of the Jordan, per quæ Ephraim reversurus erat.along which Ephraim was to return.Cumque venisset ad ea de Ephraim numero,And when anyone from the number of Ephraim had arrived, fugiens, fleeing, atque dixisset:and had said,Obsecro ut me transire permittatis:“I beg that you permit me to pass,”dicebant ei Galaaditæ:the Gileadites would say to him,Numquid Ephrathæus es?“Could you be an Ephraimite?”quo dicente:And if he said,Non sum:“I am not,”

interrogabant eum:they would ask him,Dic ergo Scibboleth, then say ‘Shibboleth,’quod interpretatur Spica.which is translated as ‘ear of grain.’Qui respondebat: Sibboleth:But he would answer ‘Sibboleth,’eadem littera spicam exprimere non valens.not being able to express the word for an ear of grain in the same letters.Statimque apprehensum jugulabant in ipso Jordanis transitu. And immediately apprehending him, they would cut his throat,Et ceciderunt in illo tempore de Ephraim quadraginta duo millia.at the same crossing point of the Jordan. And in that time of Ephraim, forty-two thousand fell.
