Descendit ergo Samson in Thamnatha:Then Samson descended to Timnah.vidensque ibi mulierem de filiabus Philisthiim,And seeing there a woman from the daughters of the Philistines,
ascendit,he went up,et nuntiavit patri suo et matri suæ,and he told his father and his mother, dicens:saying:Vidi mulierem in Thamnatha de filiabus Philisthinorum:“I saw a woman in Timnah from the daughters of the Philistines.quam quæso ut mihi accipiatis uxorem.I ask that you take her to me as wife.”
Cui dixerunt pater et mater sua:And his father and mother said to him,Numquid non est mulier in filiabus fratrum tuorum,“Is there not a woman among the daughters of your brothers,et in omni populo meo,or among all my people, quia vis accipere uxorem de Philisthiim,so that you would be willing to take a wife from the Philistines, qui incircumcisi sunt?who are uncircumcised?”Dixitque Samson ad patrem suum:And Samson said to his father:Hanc mihi accipe:“Take this woman to me.quia placuit oculis meis. For she has pleased my eyes.”
Parentes autem ejus nesciebant quod res a Domino fieret,Now his parents did not know that the matter was done by the Lord,et quæreret occasionem contra Philisthiim:and that he sought an occasion against the Philistines.eo enim tempore Philisthiim dominabantur Israëli.For at that time, the Philistines had dominion over Israel.
Descendit itaque Samson cum patre suoAnd so,et matre in Thamnatha.Samson descended with his father and mother to Timnah.Cumque venissent ad vineas oppidi,And when they had arrived at the vineyards of the town, apparuit catulus leonis sævus,he saw a young lion,et rugiens, savage and roaring,et occurrit ei.and it met him.
Irruit autem spiritus Domini in Samson,Then the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon Samson,et dilaceravit leonem, and he tore apart the lion, quasi hædum in frustra discerpens, like a young goat being torn into pieces, nihil omnino habens in manu:having nothing at all in his hand.et hoc patri et matri noluit indicare. And he was not willing to reveal this to his father and mother.
Descenditque,And he went downet locutus est mulieri quæ placuerat oculis ejus.and spoke to the woman who had pleased his eyes.
Et post aliquot dies revertens ut acciperet eam,And after some days, returning to marry her, declinavit ut videret cadaver leonis,he turned aside so that he might see the carcass of the lion.et ecce examen apum in ore leonis erat ac favus mellis. And behold, there was a swarm of bees in the mouth of the lion, with a honeycomb.
Quem cum sumpsisset in manibus comedebat in via:And when he had taken it in his hands, he ate it along the way.veniensque ad patrem suum et matrem,And arriving to his father and mother, dedit eis partem,he gave them a portion, qui et ipsi comederunt: nec tamen eis voluit indicare quod mel de corpore leonis assumpserat.and they also ate it. Yet he was not willing to reveal to them that he had taken the honey from the body of the lion.
Descendit itaque pater ejus ad mulierem,And so his father went down to the woman,et fecit filio suo Samson convivium:and he made a feast for his son Samson.sic enim juvenes facere consueverant. For so the young men were accustomed to do.
Cum ergo cives loci illius vidissent eum,And when the citizens of that place had seen him, dederunt ei sodales triginta ut essent cum eo.they presented to him thirty companions to be with him.
Quibus locutus est Samson:And Samson said to them:Proponam vobis problema:“I will propose to you a problem, quod si solveritis mihi intra septem dies convivii, which, dabo vobis triginta sindones,if you can solve it for me within the seven days of the feast,et totidem tunicas:I will give you thirty shirts and the same number of tunics.
sin autem non potueritis solvere,But if you are not able to solve it,vos dabitis mihi triginta sindones, you shall give me thirty shirtset ejusdem numeri tunicas.and the same number of tunics.”Qui responderunt ei:And they answered him,Propone problema,“Propose the problem,ut audiamus.so that we may hear it.”
Dixitque eis:And he said to them,De comedente exivit cibus,“Food went forth from that which eats,et de forti egressa est dulcedo.and sweetness went forth from that which is strong.”Nec potuerunt per tres dies propositionem solvere. And they were unable to solve the proposition for three days.
Cumque adesset dies septimus,And when the seventh day had arrived, dixerunt ad uxorem Samson:they said to the wife of Samson:Blandire viro tuo et suade ei ut indicet tibi quid significet problema:“Coax your husband, quod si facere nolueris, and persuade him to reveal to you what the proposition means.incendemus te,But if you are not willing to do so,et domum patris tui:we will burn you and your father’s house.an idcirco vocastis nos ad nuptias ut spoliaretis?Or have you called us to the wedding in order to despoil us?”
Quæ fundebat apud Samson lacrimas,And she shed tears before Samson,et quærebatur, and she complained, dicens:saying:Odisti me,“You hate me,et non diligis:and you do not love me.idcirco problema,That is why you do not want to explain to me the problem, quod proposuisti filiis populi mei, which you have proposed to the sons of my people.”non vis mihi exponere. But he responded:At ille respondit:“I was not willing to reveal it to my father and mother.Patri meo et matri nolui dicere:And so,et tibi indicare potero?how can I reveal it to you?”
Septem igitur diebus convivii flebat ante eum:Therefore, she wept before him during the seven days of the feast.tandemque die septimo cum ei esset molesta,And at length, on the seventh day, since she had been troubling him, exposuit.he explained it.Quæ statim indicavit civibus suis. And immediately she revealed it to her countrymen.
Et illi dixerunt ei die septimo ante solis occubitum:And they, on the seventh day, before the sun declined,Quid dulcius melle, said to him: “What is sweeter than honey?et quid fortius leone? And what is stronger than a lion?”Qui ait ad eos:And he said to them,Si non arassetis in vitula mea,“If you had not plowed with my heifer, non invenissetis propositionem meam.you would not have uncovered my proposition.”
Irruit itaque in eum spiritus Domini,And so the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon him, descenditque Ascalonem, and he descended to Ashkelon,et percussit ibi triginta viros:and in that place he struck down thirty men.quorum ablatas vestes dedit iis qui problema solverant. And taking away their garments, he gave them to those who had solved the problem.Iratusque nimis ascendit in domum patris sui:And being exceedingly angry, he went up to his father’s house.
uxor autem ejus accepit maritum unum de amicis ejus et pronubis. Then his wife took as a husband one of his friends and wedding companions.
