In diebus illis non erat rex in Israël,In those days, there was no king in Israel.et tribus Dan quærebat possessionem sibi,And the tribe of Dan sought a possession for themselves,ut habitaret in ea:so that they might live in it.usque ad illum enim diem inter ceteras tribus sortem non acceperat. For even to that day, they had not received their lot among the other tribes.

Miserunt ergo filii Dan stirpis et familiæ suæ quinque viros fortissimos de Saraa et Esthaol,Therefore, the sons of Dan sent five very strong men, of their stock and family,ut explorarent terram, et diligenter inspicerent:from Zorah and Eshtaol, so that they might explore the land and diligently inspect it.dixeruntque eis:And they said to them,Ite,“Go,et considerate terram.and consider the land.”Qui cum pergentes venissent in montem Ephraim,And after traveling, they arrived at mount Ephraim,et intrassent domum Michæ,and they entered into the house of Micah.requieverunt ibi:There they rested.

et agnoscentes vocem adolescentis Levitæ,And they recognized the speech of the youth who was a Levite.utentesque illius diversorio,And while making use of an inn with him, dixerunt ad eum:they said to him:Quis te huc adducit?“Who brought you here?quid hic agis? What are you doing here?quam ob causam huc venire voluisti? For what reason did you want to come here?”

Qui respondit eis:And he answered them,Hæc et hæc præstitit mihi Michas,“Micah has offered me one thing and another,et me mercede conduxit, and he has paid me wages,ut sim ei sacerdos.so that I may be his priest.”

Rogaverunt autem eum ut consuleret Dominum ut scire possent an prospero itinere pergerent,Then they begged him to consult the Lord, so that they might be able to know whether the journey they undertook would be prosperous,et res haberet effectum.and whether the matter would have success.

Qui respondit eis:And he responded to them,Ite in pace:“Go in peace.Dominus respicit viam vestram,The Lord looks with favor on your path,et iter quo pergitis.and on the journey that you have undertaken.”

Euntes igitur quinque viri venerunt Lais:And so the five men, going on, arrived at Laish.videruntque populum habitantem in ea absque ullo timore,And they saw the people, living in it without any fear, juxta consuetudinem Sidoniorum, according to the custom of the Sidonians, securum et quietum, secure and peaceful, nullo ei penitus resistente, having hardly anyone to oppose them, magnarumque opum, and with great wealth,et procul a Sidone atque a cunctis hominibus separatum.and living separately, far from Sidon and from all men.

Reversique ad fratres suos in SaraaAnd they returned to their brothers at Zorah and Eshtaol,et Esthaol, who questioned them as to what they had done.et quid egissent sciscitantibus responderunt:And they responded:

Surgite,“Rise up.ascendamus ad eos:Let us ascend to them.vidimus enim terram valde opulentam et uberem. Nolite negligere,For we have seen that the land is very wealthy and fruitful. Do not delay;nolite cessare:do not refrain.eamus, et possideamus eam:Let us go out and possess it.nullus erit labor. There will be no difficulty.

Intrabimus ad securos,We shall enter to those who dwell securely,in regionem latissimam,in a very wide region, tradetque nobis Dominus locum, and the Lord will deliver the place to us,in quo nullius rei est penuria eorum quæ gignuntur in terra.a place in which there is no lack of anything that grows upon the earth.”

Profecti igitur sunt de cognatione Dan,And so,id est, those of the kindred of Dan set out,de Saraathat is,et Esthaol, six hundred men from Zorah and Eshtaol, sexcenti viri accincti armis bellicis, girded with the weapons of warfare.

ascendentesque manserunt in Cariathiarim Judæ:And going up, they stayed at Kiriath-jearim of Judah.qui locus ex eo tempore Castrorum Dan nomen accepit,And so the place, from that time, received the name the Camp of Dan,et est post tergum Cariathiarim.and it is behind the back of Kiriath-jearim.

Inde transierunt in montem Ephraim. From there, they crossed over to mount Ephraim.Cumque venissent ad domum Michæ,And when they had arrived at the house of Micah,

dixerunt quinque viri, the five men,qui prius missi fuerant ad considerandam terram Lais, who before had been sent to consider the land of Laish, ceteris fratribus suis:said to the rest of their brothers:Nostis quod in domibus istis sit ephod,“You know that in these houses there is an ephodet theraphim, and theraphim,et sculptile, and a molten idolatque conflatile:and a graven image.videte quid vobis placeat.Consider what it may please you to do.”

Et cum paululum declinassent,And when they had turned aside a little, ingressi sunt domum adolescentis Levitæ,they entered the house of the Levite youth, qui erat in domo Michæ:who was in the house of Micah.salutaveruntque eum verbis pacificis. And they greeted him with peaceful words.

Sexcenti autem viri ita ut erant armati,Now the six hundred men, who were all armed, stabant ante ostium.were standing before the door.

At illi, qui ingressi fuerant domum juvenis, sculptile,But those who had entered the house of the youth strove to take away the graven image,et ephod, and the ephod,et theraphim, and the theraphim, atque conflatile tollere nitebantur, et sacerdos stabat ante ostium, and the molten idol. But the priest was standing in front of the door, sexcentis viris fortissimis haud procul expectantibus.with the six hundred very strong men waiting not far away.

Tulerunt igitur qui intraverant sculptile,And so, those who had entered took away the graven image, ephod, the ephod,et idola, atque conflatile.and the theraphim, and the molten idol.Quibus dixit sacerdos:And the priest said to them,Quid facitis?“What are you doing?”

Cui responderunt:And they responded to him:Tace et pone digitum super os tuum:“Be silent and place your finger over your mouth.venique nobiscum,And come with us,ut habeamus te patrem, ac sacerdotem.so that we may have you as a father as well as a priest.Quid tibi melius est,For which is better for you:ut sis sacerdos in domo unius viri,to be a priest in the house of one man,an in una tribu et familia in Israël?or in one tribe and family in Israel?”

Quod cum audisset,And when he had heard this, acquievit sermonibus eorum,he agreed to their words.et tulit ephod,And he took the ephod,et idola, and the idols,ac sculptile, and the graven image,et profectus est cum eis.and he set out with them.

Qui cum pergerent,And while traveling,et ante se ire fecissent parvulosthey had also sent the children,ac jumenta, and the cattle,et omne quod erat pretiosum, and all that was valuable to go ahead of them.

et jam a domo Michæ essent procul,And when they were far from the house of Micah, viri qui habitabant in ædibus Michæ conclamantes secuti sunt, the men who were living in the houses of Micah, crying out together, followed them.

et post tergum clamare cœperunt. And they began to shout behind their backs.Qui cum respexissent,And when they had looked back, dixerunt ad Micham:they said to Micah:Quid tibi vis?“What do you want?cur clamas? Why are you crying out?”

Qui respondit:And he responded:Deos meos, quos mihi feci,“You have taken away my gods, tulistis, et sacerdotem, which I made for myself, and the priest,et omnia quæ habeo, and all that I have.et dicitis:And do you say,Quid tibi est?‘What is it that you want?’”

Dixeruntque ei filii Dan:And the sons of Dan said to him,Cave ne ultra loquaris ad nos,“Take care that you no longer speak to us,et veniant ad te viri animo concitati, otherwise men with a mind for violence may overwhelm you,et ipse cum omni domo tua pereas.and you yourself would perish with all your house.”

Et sic cœpto itinere perrexerunt. And so, they continued on the journey that they had begun.Videns autem Michas quod fortiores se essent,But Micah, seeing that they were stronger than he was, reversus est in domum suam.returned to his house.

Sexcenti autem viri tulerunt sacerdotem,Now the six hundred men took the priest,et quæ supra diximus:and the things we stated above, veneruntque in Lais ad populum quiescentemand they went to Laish, atque securum,to a people quiet and secure,et percusserunt eos in ore gladii:and they struck them down with the edge of the sword.urbemque incendio tradiderunt,And they burned the city with fire.

nullo penitus ferente præsidium,For no one at all sent reinforcements,eo quod procul habitarent a Sidone, because they lived far away from Sidon,et cum nullo hominum haberent quidquam societatisand they had no association or business with any man.ac negotii. Now the city was situated in the region of Rehob.Erat autem civitas sita in regione Rohob:And building it up again, quam rursum exstruentes habitaverunt in ea,they lived in it,

vocato nomine civitatis Dan,calling the name of the city Dan,juxta vocabulum patris sui, according to the name of their father, quem genuerat Israël,who had been born of Israel,quæ prius Lais dicebatur.though before it was called Laish.

Posueruntque sibi sculptile, et Jonathan filium Gersam filii Moysi ac filios ejus sacerdotes in tribu Dan, usque ad diem captivitatis suæ.And they established for themselves the graven image. And Jonathan, the son of Gershom, the son of Moses, with his sons, were priests in the tribe of Dan, even until the day of their captivity.

Mansitque apud eos idolum Michæ omni tempore quo fuit domus Dei in Silo. And the idol of Micah remained with them during the entire time that the house of God was in Shiloh. In diebus illis non erat rex in Israël.In those days, there was no king in Israel.
