Addideruntque filii Israël facere malum in conspectu Domini post mortem Aod,But after the death of Ehud, the sons of Israel resumed doing evil in the sight of the Lord.
et tradidit illos Dominus in manus Jabin regis Chanaan,And the Lord delivered them into the hands of Jabin, the king of Canaan, qui regnavit in Asor:who reigned at Hazor.habuitque ducem exercitus sui nomine Sisaram,And he had a commander of his army named Sisera, ipse autem habitabat in Haroseth gentium.but this man lived at Harosheth of the Gentiles.
Clamaveruntque filii Israël ad Dominum:And the sons of Israel cried out to the Lord.nongentos enim habebat falcatos currus,For he had nine hundred chariots with scythes,et per viginti annos vehementer oppresserat eos.and he vehemently oppressed them for twenty years.
Erat autem Debbora prophetis uxor Lapidoth,Now there was a prophetess, Deborah, the wife of Lappidoth,quæ judicabat populum in illo tempore.who judged the people in that time.
Et sedebat sub palma,And she was sitting under a palm tree,quæ nomine illius vocabatur, which was called by her name, inter Ramabetween Ramah and Bethel,et Bethel in monte Ephraim:on Mount Ephraim.ascendebantque ad eam filii Israël in omne judicium. And the sons of Israel went up to her for every judgment.
Quæ misit et vocavit Barac filium Abinoëm de Cedes Nephthali:And she sent and called Barak, the son of Abinoam, from Kedesh of Naphtali.dixitque ad eum:And she said to him:Præcepit tibi Dominus Deus Israël:“The Lord, the God of Israel, instructs you:Vade, et duc exercitum in montem Thabor,‘Go and lead an army to Mount Tabor, tollesque tecum decem millia pugnatorum de filiis Nephthali, et de filiis Zabulon:and you shall take with you ten thousand fighting men from the sons of Naphtali and from the sons of Zebulun.
ego autem adducam ad te in loco torrentis Cison,Then I will lead to you, at the place of the torrent Kishon,Sisaram principem exercitus Jabin,Sisera, the leader of the army of Jabin,et currus ejus, atque omnem multitudinem, with his chariots and the entire multitude.et tradam eos in manu tua.And I will deliver them into your hand.’”
Dixitque ad eam Barac:And Barak said to her:Si venis mecum,“If you will come with me,vadam:I will go.si nolueris venire mecum,If you are not willing to come with me,non pergam.I will not go.”
Quæ dixit ad eum:She said to him: “Indeed,Ibo quidem tecum,I will go with you.sed in hac vice victoria non reputabitur tibi,But due to this change, the victory shall not be reputed to you.quia in manu mulieris tradetur Sisara. And so Sisera will be delivered into the hand of a woman.”Surrexit itaque Debbora,Therefore, Deborah rose up,et perrexit cum Barac in Cedes.and she traveled with Barak to Kedesh.
Qui,And he,accitis Zabulon et Nephthali, summoning Zebulun and Naphtali, ascendit cum decem millibus pugnatorum, ascended with ten thousand fighting men, habens Debboram in comitatu suo.having Deborah in his company.
Haber autem Cinæus recesserat quondam a ceteris Cinæis fratribus suis,Now Heber, the Kenite, had previously withdrawn from the rest of the Kenites, filiis Hobab cognati Moysi:his brothers, the sons of Hobab,et tetenderat tabernacula usque ad vallem, quæ vocatur Sennim, the relative of Moses. And he had pitched his tents as far as the valley that is called Zaanannim,et erat juxta Cedes.which was near Kedesh.
Nuntiatumque est Sisaræ quod ascendisset Barac filius Abinoëm in montem Thabor:And it was reported to Sisera that Barak, the son of Abinoam, had ascended to Mount Tabor.
et congregavit nongentos falcatos currus,And he gathered together the nine hundred chariots with scythes,et omnem exercitum de Haroseth gentium ad torrentem Cison.and the entire army, from Harosheth of the Gentiles to the torrent Kishon.
Dixitque Debbora ad Barac:And Deborah said to Barak:Surge,“Rise up.hæc est enim dies,For this is the day on which the Lord delivers Sisera into your hands.in qua tradidit Dominus Sisaram in manus tuas:For he is your commander.”en ipse ductor est tuus. And so,Descendit itaque Barac de monte Thabor,Barak descended from Mount Tabor,et decem millia pugnatorum cum eo.and the ten thousand fighting men with him.
Perterruitque Dominus Sisaram,And the Lord struck Sisera with great fear,et omnes currus ejus, and all his chariots and all his multitude with the edge of the sword, universamque multitudinem in ore gladii ad conspectum Barac:in the sight of Barak,in tantum,so much so that Sisera,ut Sisara de curru desiliens, leaping from his chariot, pedibus fugeret, fled on foot.
et Barac persequeretur fugientes currus,And Barak pursued the fleeing chariots,et exercitum usque ad Haroseth gentium, and the army, as far as Harosheth of the Gentiles.et omnis hostium multitudo usque ad internecionem caderet. And the entire multitude of the enemy was cut down, unto utter annihilation.
Sisara autem fugiens pervenit ad tentorium Jahel uxoris Haber Cinæi. Erat enim pax inter Jabin regem Asor, et domum Haber Cinæi.But Sisera, while fleeing, arrived at the tent of Jael, the wife of Heber, the Kenite. For there was peace between Jabin, the king of Hazor, and the house of Heber, the Kenite.
Egressa igitur Jahel in occursum Sisaræ,Therefore, Jael went out to meet Sisera, dixit ad eum:and she said to him:Intra ad me,“Enter to me,domine mi:my lord. Enter, intra, ne timeas.you should not be afraid.”Qui ingressus tabernaculum ejus, et opertus ab ea pallio,And he entered her tent, and having been covered by her with a cloak,
dixit ad eam:he said to her:Da mihi,“Give me,obsecro,I beg you, paululum aquæ,a little water.quia sitio valde. For I am very thirsty.”Quæ aperuit utrem lactis,And she opened a bottle of milk,et dedit ei bibere, and she gave him to drink.et operuit illum. And she covered him.
Dixitque Sisara ad eam:And Sisera said to her:Sta ante ostium tabernaculi:“Stand before the door of the tent.et cum venerit aliquis interrogans te,And if anyone arrives,et dicens:questioning you and saying,Numquid hic est aliquis?‘Could there be any man here?’respondebis:you shall respond,Nullus est.‘There is no one.’”
Tulit itaque Jahel uxor Haber clavum tabernaculi,And so Jael, the wife of Heber, took a spike from the tent, assumens pariter et malleum:and also took a mallet.et ingressa abscondite et cum silentio,And entering unseen and with silence, posuit supra tempus capitis ejus clavum, she placed the spike over the temple of his head.percussumque malleo defixit in cerebrum usque ad terram:And striking it with the mallet, she drove it through his brain, qui soporem morti consocians defecit,as far as the ground. And so, joining deep sleep to death,et mortuus est.he fell unconscious and died.
Et ecce Barac sequens Sisaram veniebat:And behold, Barak arrived, in pursuit of Sisera.egressaque Jahel in occursum ejus,And Jael, going out to meet him, dixit ei:said to him,Veni,“Come,et ostendam tibi virum quem quæris.and I will show you the man whom you are seeking.”Qui cum intrasset ad eam, vidit Sisaram jacentem mortuum,And when he had entered her tent, he saw Sisera lying dead,et clavum infixum in tempore ejus.with the spike fixed in his temples.
Humiliavit ergo Deus in die illo Jabin regem Chanaan coram filiis Israël:Thus did God humble Jabin, the king of Canaan, on that day, before the sons of Israel.
qui crescebant quotidie,And they increased every day.et forti manu opprimebant Jabin regem Chanaan,And with a strong hand they overpowered Jabin, the king of Canaan, donec delerent eum.until they wiped him out.
