Factum est autem cum cessassent loqui,But when they had ceased speaking, indignatus Holofernes vehementer,it happened that Holofernes, being very indignant, dixit ad Achior:said to Achior:
Quoniam prophetasti nobis,“Because you have prophesied to us,dicens quod gens Israël defendatur a Deo suo, saying that the people of Israel may be defended by their God,ut ostendam tibi quoniam non est deus nisi Nabuchodonosor, and so as to reveal to you that there is no God, except Nebuchadnezzar:
cum percusserimus eos omnes, sicut hominem unum, when we will have struck them all as one man, tunc et ipse cum illis Assyriorum gladio interibis, then you also will pass away with them by the sword of the Assyrians,et omnis Israël tecum perditione disperiet:and all Israel will perish into perdition with you.
et probabis quoniam Nabuchodonosor dominus sit universæ terræ:And you will be shown that Nebuchadnezzar is the lord of the whole earth.tuncque gladius militiæ meæ transiet per latera tua,And then, the sword of my army will pass through your sides, and,et confixus cades inter vulneratos Israël,being stabbed, you will fall among the wounded of Israel,et non respirabis ultra, and you will breathe no longer, donec extermineris cum illis.when you have been destroyed with them.
Porro autem si prophetiam tuam veram existimas,And furthermore, if you consider your prophecy to be true, non concidat vultus tuus:do not let your countenance fall,et pallor qui faciem tuam obtinet abscedat a te,and let the paleness that has taken hold of your face depart from you,si verba mea hæc putas impleri non posse.if you claim that these my words cannot be fulfilled.
Ut autem noveris quia simul cum illis hæc experieris,But so that you may know that you will experience these things together with them, ecce ex hac hora illorum populo sociaberis, behold, from this hour you will be associated with their people, so that,ut, dum dignas mei gladii pœnas exceperint, when they receive the punishment that they deserve from my sword, ipse simul ultioni subjaceas.you will fall under the same vengeance.”
Tunc Holofernes præcepit servis suis ut comprehenderent Achior,Then Holofernes instructed his servants to apprehend Achior,et perducerent eum in Bethuliam, and to lead him through to Bethulia,et traderent eum in manus filiorum Israël.and to deliver him into the hands of the sons of Israel.
Et accipientes eum servi Holofernis,And, taking him, the servants of Holofernes traveled through the plains.profecti sunt per campestria: sed cum appropinquassent ad montana,But when they approached close to the mountains, exierunt contra eos fundibularii.the slingers of stones went forth against them.
Illi autem divertentes a latere montis,Then, diverting by the side of the mountain, ligaverunt Achior ad arborem manibus et pedibus, they tied Achior, hands and feet, to a tree,et sic vinctum restibus dimiserunt eum,and so they abandoned him, bound with ropes,et reversi sunt ad dominum suum.and they returned to their lord.
Porro filii Israël descendentes de Bethulia,Thereafter, the sons of Israel, descending from Bethulia, venerunt ad eum:came to him.quem solventes,Releasing him, duxerunt ad Bethuliam, they brought him to Bethulia.atque in medium populi illum statuentes,And so, standing him in the midst of the people, percunctati sunt quid rerum esset quod illum vinctum Assyrii reliquissent.they interrogated him as to what event caused the Assyrians to abandon him, bound.
In diebus illis erant illic principes Ozias filius Micha de tribu Simeon,In those days, the rulers of that place were Uzziah, the son of Micah of the tribe of Simeon,et Charmi, and Chabris, qui et Gothoniel.also called Gothoniel.
In medio itaque seniorum,And so,et in conspectu omnium,in the midst of the elders and in the sight of everyone,Achior dixit omnia quæ locutus ipse fuerat ab Holoferne interrogatus:Achior explained all that he had said in reply to the questioning of Holofernes,et qualiter populus Holofernis voluisset propter hoc verbum interficere eum,and in what manner the people of Holofernes wanted to have him killed because of this word,
et quemadmodum ipse Holofernes iratus jusserit eum Israëlitis hac de causa tradi, and how Holofernes himself, being angry, had ordered him to be handed over to the Israelites,ut dum vicerit filios Israël,for this reason: so that when he would prevail over the sons of Israel, tunc et ipsum Achior diversis jubeat interire suppliciis, then he would also command Achior himself to be executed by diverse torments, propter hoc quod dixisset: Deus cæli defensor eorum est.because he had said that the God of heaven is their defender.
Cumque Achior universa hæc exposuisset,And when Achior had declared all these things, omnis populus cecidit in faciem, all the people fell on their faces, adorantes Dominum, adoring the Lord, and,et communi lamentatione et fletu unanimes preces suas Domino effuderunt, communing together with mourning and weeping, they poured out their prayers with one mind to the Lord,
dicentes:saying:Domine Deus cæli et terræ,“O Lord, intuere superbiam eorum,God of heaven and earth,et respice ad nostram humilitatem, behold their arrogance,et faciem sanctorum tuorum attende, and gaze upon our humility,et ostende quoniam non derelinquis præsumentes de te:and attend to the face of your holy ones,et præsumentes de se,and reveal that you do not abandon those who rely on you,et de sua virtute gloriantes, and that those who rely on themselves and who glory in their own strength, humilias.you humble.”
Finito itaque fletu,And so, when their weeping was ended,et per totam diem oratione populorum completa, consolati sunt Achior, and the prayer of the people throughout the entire day was completed, they consoled Achior,
dicentes:saying:Deus patrum nostrorum,“The God of our fathers, cujus tu virtutem prædicasti, whose power you have predicted, ipse tibi hanc dabit vicissitudinem, will give to you this in return: that you,ut eorum magis tu interitum videas.instead, will see the destruction of them.
Cum vero Dominus Deus noster dederit hanc libertatem servis suis,Truly, when the Lord our God will give this freedom to his servants, sit et tecum Deus in medio nostri:may God also be with you in our midst,ut sicut placuerit tibi,so that, just as it pleases you,ita cum tuis omnibus converseris nobiscum.everyone who is with you may keep company with us.”
Tunc Ozias,Then Uzziah, finito consilio, after the council was ended, suscepit eum in domum suam, received him into his own house,et fecit ei cœnam magnam.and he made him a great supper.
Et vocatis omnibus presbyteris,And all the elders were invited;simul expleto jejunio refecerunt.together they refreshed themselves at the completion of their fast.
Postea vero convocatus est omnis populus,In truth, after this, all the people were called together,et per totam noctem intra ecclesiam oraverunt, and they prayed throughout the entire night within the assembly, petentes auxilium a Deo Israël.petitioning help from the God of Israel.
