1Multis autem turbis circumstantibus,Then,ita ut se invicem conculcarent,as great crowds were standing so close that they were stepping on one another,cœpit dicere ad discipulos suos:he began to say to his disciples:Attendite a fermento pharisæorum,“Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees,quod est hypocrisis.which is hypocrisy.
2Nihil autem opertum est,For there is nothing covered,quod non reveletur:which will not be revealed,neque absconditum,nor anything hidden,quod non sciatur.which will not be known.
3Quoniam quæ in tenebris dixistis, in lumine dicentur:For the things that you have spoken in darkness will be declared in the light.et quod in aurem locuti estis in cubiculis, prædicabitur in tectis.And what you have said in the ear in bedrooms will be proclaimed from the housetops.
4Dico autem vobis amicis meis:So I say to you, my friends:Ne terreamini ab his qui occidunt corpus,Do not be fearful of those who kill the body,et post hæc non habent amplius quid faciant.and afterwards have no more that they can do.
5Ostendam autem vobis quem timeatis:But I will reveal to you whom you should fear.timete eum qui,Fear him who,postquam occiderit,after he will have killed,habet potestatem mittere in gehennam:has the power to cast into Hell.ita dico vobis,So I say to you:hunc timete.Fear him.
6Nonne quinque passeres veneunt dipondio,Are not five sparrows sold for two small coins?et unus ex illis non est in oblivione coram Deo?And yet not one of these is forgotten in the sight of God.
7sedBut even the very hairs of your head have all been numbered.et capilli capitis vestri omnes numerati sunt.Therefore,Nolite ergo timere:do not be afraid.multis passeribus pluris estis vos.You are worth more than many sparrows.
8Dico autem vobis:But I say to you:Omnis quicumque confessus fuerit me coram hominibus,Everyone who will have confessed me before men,et Filius hominis confitebitur illum coram angelis Dei:the Son of man will also confess him before the Angels of God.
9qui autem negaverit me coram hominibus,But everyone who will have denied me before men,negabitur coram angelis Dei.he will be denied before the Angels of God.
10Et omnis qui dicit verbum in Filium hominis,And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of man,remittetur illi:it will be forgiven of him.ei autem qui in Spiritum Sanctum blasphemaverit,But of him who will have blasphemed against the Holy Spirit,non remittetur.it will not be forgiven.
11Cum autem inducent vos in synagogas,And when they will lead you to the synagogues,et ad magistratus,and to magistrateset potestates,and authorities,nolite solliciti esse qualiter,do not choose to be worried about howaut quid respondeatis,or what you will answer,aut quid dicatis.or about what you might say.
12Spiritus enim Sanctus docebit vos in ipsa hora quid oporteat vos dicere.For the Holy Spirit will teach you, in the same hour, what you must say.”
13Ait autem ei quidam de turba:And someone from the crowd said to him,Magister,“Teacher,dic fratri meo ut dividat mecum hæreditatem.tell my brother to share the inheritance with me.”
14At ille dixit illi:But he said to him,Homo,“Man,quis me constituit judicem,who has appointed me as judgeaut divisorem super vos?or arbitrator over you?”
15Dixitque ad illos:So he said to them:Videte,“Be cautiouset cavete ab omni avaritia:and wary of all avarice.quia non in abundantia cujusquam vita ejus est ex his quæ possidet.For a person’s life is not found in the abundance of the things that he possesses.”
16Dixit autem similitudinem ad illos,Then he spoke to them using a comparison,dicens:saying:Hominis cujusdam divitis uberes fructus ager attulit:“The fertile land of a certain wealthy man produced crops.
17et cogitabat intra se dicens:And he thought within himself, saying:Quid faciam,‘What should I do?quia non habeo quo congregem fructus meos?For I have nowhere to gather together my crops.’
18Et dixit:And he said:Hoc faciam:‘This is what I will do.destruam horrea mea,I will tear down my barns and build larger ones.et majora faciam:And into these,et illuc congregabo omnia quæ nata sunt mihi,I will gather all the things that have been grown for me,et bona mea,as well as my goods.
19et dicam animæ meæ: Anima,And I will say to my soul: Soul,habes multa bona posita in annos plurimos:you have many goods, stored up for many years.requiesce,Relax, eat,comede,drink,bibe, epulare.and be cheerful.’
20Dixit autem illi Deus:But God said to him: ‘Foolish one,Stulte, hac nocte animam tuam repetunt a te:this very night they require your soul of you. To whom,quæ autem parasti,then, will those things belong,cujus erunt?which you have prepared?’
21Sic est qui sibi thesaurizat,So it is with him who stores up for himself,et non est in Deum dives.and is not wealthy with God.”
22Dixitque ad discipulos suos:And he said to his disciples:Ideo dico vobis,“And so I say to you:nolite solliciti esse animæ vestræ quid manducetis,Do not choose to be anxious about your life, as to what you may eat,neque corpori quid induamini.nor about your body, as to what you will wear.
23Anima plus est quam esca,Life is more than food,et corpus plus quam vestimentum.and the body is more than clothing.
24Considerate corvos,Consider the ravens.quia non seminant, neque metunt,For they neither sow nor reap;quibus non est cellarium, neque horreum,there is no storehouse or barn for them.et Deus pascit illos.And yet God pastures them.Quanto magis vos pluris estis illis?How much more are you, compared to them?
25Quis autem vestrum cogitando potest adjicere ad staturam suam cubitum unum?But which of you, by thinking, is able to add one cubit to his stature?
26Si ergo neque quod minimum est potestis,Therefore, if you are not capable, in what is so little,quid de ceteris solliciti estis?why be anxious about the rest?
27Considerate lilia quomodo crescunt:Consider the lilies, how they grow.non laborant, neque nent:They neither work nor weave.dico autem vobis,But I say to you,nec Salomon in omni gloria sua vestiebatur sicut unum ex istis.not even Solomon, in all his glory, was clothed like one of these.
28Si autem fœnum,Therefore,quod hodie est in agro,if God so clothes the grass,et cras in clibanum mittitur,which is in the field today and thrown into the furnace tomorrow,Deus sic vestit:how much more you,quanto magis vos pusillæ fidei?O little in faith?
29Et vos nolite quærere quid manducetis,And so, do not choose to inquire as to what you will eat,aut quid bibatis:or what you will drink.et nolite in sublime tolli:And do not choose to be lifted up on high.
30hæc enim omnia gentes mundi quærunt.For all these things are sought by the Gentiles of the world.Pater autem vester scit quoniam his indigetis.And your Father knows that you have need of these things.
31Verumtamen quærite primum regnum Dei,Yet truly, seek first the kingdom of God,et justitiam ejus: et hæc omnia adjicientur vobis.and his justice, and all these things shall be added to you.
32Nolite timere pusillus grex,Do not be afraid, little flock;quia complacuit Patri vestro dare vobis regnum.for it has pleased your Father to give you the kingdom.
33Vendite quæ possidetis,Sell what you possess,et date eleemosynam.and give alms.Facite vobis sacculos,Make for yourselves purses that will not wear out,qui non veterascunt,a treasure that will not fall short,thesaurum non deficientem in cælis:in heaven,quo fur non appropriat,where no thief approaches,neque tinea corrumpit.and no moth corrupts.
34Ubi enim thesaurus vester est,For where your treasure is,ibi et cor vestrum erit.there will your heart be also.
35Sint lumbi vestri præcincti,Let your waists be girded,et lucernæ ardentes in manibus vestris,and let lamps be burning in your hands.
36et vos similes hominibus exspectantibus dominum suum quando revertatur a nuptiis:And let you yourselves be like men awaiting their lord,ut,when he will return from the wedding;cum veneritso that,et pulsaverit,when he arrives and knocks,confestim aperiant ei.they may open to him promptly.
37Beati servi illi quos, cum venerit dominus,Blessed are those servants whom the Lord, when he returns,invenerit vigilantes:will find being vigilant.amen dico vobis,Amen I say to you,quod præcinget se, et faciet illos discumbere,that he will gird himself and have them sit down to eat, while he,et transiens ministrabit illis.continuing on, will minister to them.
38Et si venerit in secunda vigilia,And if he will return in the second watch,et si in tertia vigilia venerit,or if in the third watch,et ita invenerit,and if he will find them to be so:beati sunt servi illi.then blessed are those servants.
39Hoc autem scitote,But know this:quoniam si sciret paterfamilias, qua hora fur veniret,that if the father of the family knew at what hour the thief would arrive,vigilaret utique,he would certainly stand watch,et non sineret perfodi domum suam.and he would not permit his house to be broken into.
40Et vos estote parati:You also must be prepared.quia qua hora non putatis, Filius hominis veniet.For the Son of man will return at an hour that you will not realize.”
41Ait autem ei Petrus:Then Peter said to him,Domine,“Lord,ad nos dicis hanc parabolam,are you telling this parable to us,an et ad omnes?or also to everyone?”
42Dixit autem Dominus: Quis,So the Lord said:putas, est fidelis dispensator, et prudens,“Who do you think is the faithful and prudent steward,quem constituit dominus supra familiam suam,whom his Lord has appointed over his family,ut det illis in tempore tritici mensuram?in order to give them their measure of wheat in due time?
43Beatus ille servus quem,Blessed is that servant if,cum venerit dominus,when his Lord will return,invenerit ita facientem.he will find him acting in this manner.
44Vere dico vobis,Truly I say to you,quoniam supra omnia quæ possidet, constituet illum.that he will appoint him over all that he possesses.
45Quod si dixerit servus ille in corde suo:But if that servant will have said in his heart,Moram facit dominus meus venire:‘My Lord has made a delay in his return,’et cœperit percutere servos,and if he has begun to strike the menet ancillas,and women servants,et edere,and to eatet bibere,and drink,et inebriari:and to be inebriated,
46veniet dominus servi illius in die qua non sperat,then the Lord of that servant will return on a day which he hoped not,et hora qua nescit,and at an hour which he knew not.et dividet eum,And he will separate him,partemque ejus cum infidelibus ponet.and he will place his portion with that of the unfaithful.
47Ille autem servus qui cognovit voluntatem domini sui,And that servant,et non præparavit,who knew the will of his Lord,et non facit secundum voluntatem ejus,and who did not prepare and did not act according to his will,vapulabit multis:will be beaten many times over.
48qui autem non cognovit, et fecit digna plagis,Yet he who did not know, and who acted in a way that deserves a beating,vapulabit paucis.will be beaten fewer times.Omni autem cui multum datum est,So then, of all to whom much has been given,multum quæretur ab eo:much will be required.et cui commendaverunt multum,And of those to whom much has been entrusted,plus petent ab eo.even more will be asked.
49Ignem veni mittere in terram,I have come to cast a fire upon the earth.et quid volo nisi ut accendatur?And what should I desire, except that it may be kindled?
50Baptismo autem habeo baptizari:And I have a baptism, with which I am to be baptized.et quomodo coarctor usque dum perficiatur?And how I am constrained, even until it may be accomplished!
51Putatis quia pacem veni dare in terram?Do you think that I have come to give peace to the earth?non,No,dico vobis,I tell you,sed separationem:but division.
52erunt enim ex hoc quinque in domo una divisi,For from this time on, there will be five in one house:tres in duos,divided as three against two,et duo in tresand as two against three.
53dividentur: pater in filium,A father will be divided against a son,et filius in patrem suum,and a son against his father;mater in filiam, et filia in matrem,a mother against a daughter and a daughter against a mother;socrus in nurum suam,a mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law,et nurus in socrum suam.and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.”
54Dicebat autem et ad turbas:And he also said to the crowds:Cum videritis nubem orientem ab occasu,“When you see a cloud rising from the setting of the sun,statim dicitis:immediately you say,Nimbus venit:‘A rain cloud is coming.’et ita fit.And so it does.
55Et cum austrum flantem,And when a south wind is blowing,dicitis:you say,Quia æstus erit:‘It will be hot.’et fit.And so it is.
56Hypocritæ!You hypocrites!faciem cæliYou discern the face of the heavens,et terræ nostis probare:and of the earth,hoc autem tempus quomodo non probatis?yet how is it that you do not discern this time?
57quid autem et a vobis ipsis non judicatis quod justum est?And why do you not, even among yourselves, judge what is just?
58Cum autem vadis cum adversario tuo ad principem,So, when you are going with your adversary to the ruler,in via da operam liberari ab illo,while you are on the way, make an effort to be freed from him,ne forte trahat te ad judicem,lest perhaps he may lead you to the judge,et judex tradat te exactori,and the judge may deliver you to the officer,et exactor mittat te in carcerem.and the officer may cast you into prison.
59Dico tibi,I tell you,non exies inde,you will not depart from there,donec etiam novissimum minutum reddas.until you have paid the very last coin.”
