Erant autem appropinquantes ei publicani,Now tax collectors and sinners were drawing near to him,et peccatores ut audirent illum.so that they might listen to him.

Et murmurabant pharisæi,And the Phariseeset scribæ,and the scribes murmured, dicentes:saying,Quia hic peccatores recipit,“This one accepts sinnerset manducat cum illis.and eats with them.”

Et ait ad illos parabolam istam dicens:And he told this parable to them, saying:

Quis ex vobis homo,“What man among you,qui habet centum oves, who has one hundred sheep,et si perdiderit unam ex illis, and if he will have lost one of them, nonne dimittit nonaginta novem in deserto, would not leave the ninety-nine in the desertet vadit ad illam quæ perierat, and go after the one whom he had lost, donec inveniat eam?until he finds it?

Et cum invenerit eam,And when he has found it,imponit in humeros suos gaudens:he places it on his shoulders, rejoicing.

et veniens domum convocat amicosAnd returning home,et vicinos,he calls together his friends and neighbors, dicens illis:saying to them:Congratulamini mihi,‘Congratulate me!quia inveni ovem meam,For I have found my sheep,quæ perierat.which had been lost.’

Dico vobis quod ita gaudium erit in cælo super uno peccatore pœnitentiam agente,I say to you, that there will be so much more joy in heaven over one sinner repenting, quam super nonaginta novem justis, than over the ninety-nine just, qui non indigent pœnitentia.who do not need to repent.

Aut quæ mulier habens drachmas decem,Or what woman,si perdiderit drachmam unam, having ten drachmas, nonne accendit lucernam,if she will have lost one drachma,et everrit domum, would not light a candle,et quærit diligenter, and sweep the house, donec inveniat?and diligently search until she finds it?

Et cum invenerit convocat amicas et vicinas, dicens:And when she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors,Congratulamini mihi, saying: ‘Rejoice with me!quia inveni drachmam quam perdideram. For I have found the drachma, which I had lost.’

Ita, dico vobis,So I say to you, gaudium erit coram angelis Dei super uno peccatore pœnitentiam agente.there will be joy before the Angels of God over even one sinner who is repentant.”

Ait autem:And he said:Homo quidam habuit duos filios:“A certain man had two sons.

et dixit adolescentior ex illis patri:And the younger of them said to the father,Pater,‘Father,da mihi portionem substantiæ, quæ me contingit.give me the portion of your estate which would go to me.’Et divisit illis substantiam. And he divided the estate between them.

Et non post multos dies,And after not many days, congregatis omnibus, the younger son, adolescentior filius peregre profectus est in regionem longinquam, gathering it all together, set out on a long journey to a distant region.et ibi dissipavit substantiam suam vivendo luxuriose. And there, he dissipated his substance, living in luxury.

Et postquam omnia consummasset,And after he had consumed it all, facta est fames valida in regione illa,a great famine occurred in that region,et ipse cœpit egere.and he began to be in need.

Et abiit,And he went and attached himself to one of the citizens of that region.et adhæsit uni civium regionis illius:And he sent him to his farm,et misit illum in villam suam ut pasceret porcos.in order to feed the swine.

Et cupiebat implere ventrem suum de siliquis, quas porci manducabant:And he wanted to fill his belly with the scraps that the swine ate.et nemo illi dabat. But no one would give it to him.

In se autem reversus,And returning to his senses, dixit:he said:Quanti mercenarii in domo patris mei abundant panibus,‘How many hired hands in my father’s house have abundant bread, ego autem hic fame pereo!while I perish here in famine!

surgam,I shall rise upet ibo ad patrem meum, and go to my father,et dicam ei:and I will say to him:Pater,Father, peccavi in cælum,I have sinned against heavenet coram te:and before you.

jam non sum dignus vocari filius tuus:I am not worthy to be called your son.fac me sicut unum de mercenariis tuis.Make me one of your hired hands.’

Et surgens venit ad patrem suum. And rising up, he went to his father.Cum autem adhuc longe esset, vidit illum pater ipsius,But while he was still at a distance, his father saw him,et misericordia motus est,and he was moved with compassion,et accurrens cecidit super collum ejus, et osculatus est eum.and running to him, he fell upon his neck and kissed him.

Dixitque ei filius:And the son said to him:Pater,‘Father, peccavi in cælum,I have sinned against heavenet coram te:and before you.jam non sum dignus vocari filius tuus. Now I am not worthy to be called your son.’

Dixit autem pater ad servos suos:But the father said to his servants:Cito proferte stolam primam,‘Quickly!et induite illum,Bring out the best robe,et date annulum in manum ejus, and clothe him with it.et calceamenta in pedes ejus:And put a ring on his hand and shoes on his feet.

et adducite vitulum saginatum,And bring the fatted calf here,et occidite, and kill it.et manducemus,And let us eatet epulemur:and hold a feast.

quia hic filius meus mortuus erat,For this son of mine was dead,et revixit:and has revived;perierat,he was lost,et inventus est.and is found.’Et cœperunt epulari. And they began to feast.

Erat autem filius ejus senior in agro:But his elder son was in the field.et cum veniret, et appropinquaret domui,And when he returned and drew near to the house, audivit symphoniam et chorum:he heard music and dancing.

et vocavit unum de servis,And he called one of the servants,et interrogavit quid hæc essent.and he questioned him as to what these things meant.

Isque dixit illi:And he said to him:Frater tuus venit,‘Your brother has returned,et occidit pater tuus vitulum saginatum, and your father has killed the fatted calf, quia salvum illum recepit.because he has received him safely.’

Indignatus est autem,Then he became indignant,et nolebat introire.and he was unwilling to enter.Pater ergo illius egressus,Therefore, his father, going out,cœpit rogare illum.began to plead with him.

At ille respondens,And in response, dixit patri suo:he said to his father:Ecce tot annis servio tibi,‘Behold, I have been serving you for so many years.et numquam mandatum tuum præterivi:And I have never transgressed your commandment. And yet,et numquam dedisti mihi hædum ut cum amicis meis epularer.you have never given me even a young goat, so that I might feast with my friends.

Sed postquam filius tuus hic,Yet after this son of yours returned, qui devoravit substantiam suam cum meretricibus, who has devoured his substance with loose women, venit, occidisti illi vitulum saginatum.you have killed the fatted calf for him.’

At ipse dixit illi:But he said to him:Fili,‘Son,tu semper mecum es,you are with me always,et omnia mea tua sunt:and all that I have is yours.

epulari autem,But it was necessary to feastet gaudere oportebat, and to rejoice.quia frater tuus hic mortuus erat,For this brother of yours was dead,et revixit;and has revived;perierat,he was lost,et inventus est.and is found.’”
