Sed post triennii tempus,But after a time of three years, cognovit Judas et qui cum eo erant Demetrium Seleuci cum multitudine valida et navibus per portam Tripolis ascendisse ad loca opportuna,Judas and those who were with him realized that Demetrius of Seleucus had gone up to strategic places with a very strong multitude and a navy at the port of Tripoli,
et tenuisse regiones adversus Antiochum, and had taken hold of the regions opposite Antiochus,et ducem ejus Lysiam.and his commander, Lysias.
Alcimus autem quidam,Now a certain Alcimus, qui summus sacerdos fuerat, who had been high priest, sed voluntarie coinquinatus est temporibus commistionis, but who had willfully defiled himself in the time of the co-mingling,considerans nullo modo sibi esse salutemconsidering there to be no means for his safety, neque accessum ad altare, nor access to the altar,
venit ad regem Demetrium centesimo quinquagesimo anno, went to king Demetrius in the one hundred and fiftieth year, offerens ei coronam auream et palmam, offering to him a crown of gold, and a palm, and beyond these, super hæc et thallos, qui templi esse videbantur.some branches that seemed to belong to the temple. And,Et ipsa quidem die siluit.indeed, on that day, he was silent.
Tempus autem opportunum dementiæ suæ nactus,But,convocatus a Demetrio ad consilium, having met with an opportune time for his madness,et interrogatus quibus rebus et consiliis Judæi niterentur,he was called to a counsel by Demetrius and asked what things the Jews relied upon and what were their counsels.
respondit:He responded:Ipsi qui dicuntur Assidæi Judæorum,“Those among the Jews who are called Hasideans, quibus præest Judas Machabæus,of whom Judas Maccabeus is foremost, bella nutriunt, nourish wars,et seditiones movent, and raise seditions, nec patiuntur regnum esse quietum:and will not permit the kingdom to be at peace.
nam et ego defraudatus parentum gloria (dico autem summo sacerdotio) huc veni:For I also, being cheated out of the glory of my ancestors (but I speak of the high priesthood), have come here,
primo quidem utilitatibus regis fidem servans, first, indeed, in faithful service to the king’s interests, secundo autem etiam civibus consulens:but also as an advisor of the citizens.nam illorum pravitate universum genus nostrum non minime vexatur. For our entire nation is no less afflicted by their depravity.
Sed oro his singulis,But I beg you,o rex,O king, cognitis, knowing each of these things,et regioni et generi, look after both the region and our people, secundum humanitatem tuam pervulgatam omnibus, according to your humanity, prospice:which is publicly known to all.
nam,For,quamdiu superest Judas,as long as Judas survives, impossibile est pacem esse negotiis.it is impossible for the matter to be at peace.”
Talibus autem ab hoc dictis,Then, having spoken such things before them,et ceteri amici hostiliter se habentes adversus Judam, the rest of the allies, who held themselves to be enemies against Judas, inflammaverunt Demetrium.further inflamed Demetrius.
Qui statim Nicanorem præpositum elephantorum ducem misit in Judæam:And immediately he sent Nicanor, the commander over the elephants, into the first position against Judea,
datis mandatis ut ipsum quidem Judam caperet:giving him orders to be certain to capture Judas himself, and,eos vero qui cum illo erant, dispergeret, truly, to scatter all those who were with him,et constitueret Alcimum maximi templi summum sacerdotem.and to appoint Alcimus as the high priest of the great temple.
Tunc gentes quæ de Judæa fugerant Judam,Then the Gentiles, gregatim se Nicanori miscebant, who had fled from Judas away from Judea, miseriasmingled themselves in flocks with Nicanor,et clades Judæorum prosperitates rerum suarum existimantes.thinking that the miseries and calamities of the Jews would become the cause of their prosperity.
Audito itaque Judæi Nicanoris adventu,And so, when the Jews heard of Nicanor’s arrival and that the nations were assembled, they,et conventu nationum, sprinkling dirt on their heads, conspersi terra rogabant eum qui populum suum constituit, ut in æternum custodiret, petitioned him who established his people to preserve them in eternity, quique suam portionem signis evidentibus protegit.and who likewise protected his portion by clear signs.
Imperante autem duce,Then, at the command of their leader, statim inde moverunt, they moved promptly from there, conveneruntque ad castellum Dessau.and together assembled at the town of Dessau.
Simon vero frater Judæ commiserat cum Nicanore: sed conterritus est repentino adventu adversariorum. In truth, Simon, the brother of Judas, had joined battle with Nicanor, but he became frightened at the unexpected arrival of the adversaries.
Nicanor tamen,Even so, Nicanor, audiens virtutem comitum Judæ,hearing of the virtue of the companions of Judas,et animi magnitudinem quam pro patriæ certaminibus habebant, and the great courage with which they struggled on behalf of their country, sanguine judicium facere metuebat.was afraid to accomplish judgment by the sword.
Quam ob rem præmisit Posidonium,For this reason,et Theodotium,he sent ahead Posidonius,et Matthiam, and Theodotus,ut darent dextrasand Matthias, atque acciperent.so as to give and receive the pledge of right hands.
Et cum diu de his consilium ageretur,And when a council was held all day about this,et ipse dux ad multitudinem retulisset, and the commander had brought it before the multitude, omnium una fuit sententia amicitiis annuere.they were all of one opinion to consent to an alliance.
Itaque diem constituerunt,And so,qua secreto inter se agerent:they appointed a day,et singulis sellæ prolatæ sunt,on which they would act among themselves secretly,et positæ.and seats were brought out and placed for each of them.
Præcepit autem Judas armatos esse locis opportunis,But Judas instructed armed men to be in strategic places,ne forte ab hostibus repente mali aliquid oriretur:lest some kind of malice might unexpectedly spring up from the enemies.et congruum colloquium fecerunt. And they had an agreeable conference.
Morabatur autem Nicanor Jerosolymis,Then Nicanor stayed in Jerusalem, nihilque inique agebat:and he did no iniquity;gregesque turbarum quæ congregatæ fuerant,he sent away the flocks of the crowds, dimisit.which had been gathered together.
Habebat autem Judam semper carum ex animo,And Judas always held him dear to the heart,et erat viro inclinatus.and was favorably inclined toward the man.
Rogavitque eum ducere uxorem,And he asked him to consider a wife, filiosque procreare.and to procreate sons.Nuptias fecit:He got married;quiete egit,he lived quietly, communiterque vivebant.and they all lived in common.
Alcimus autem, videns caritatem illorum ad invicem et conventiones,But Alcimus seeing the love that they had for one another, and the agreements, venit ad Demetrium, et dicebat Nicanorem rebus alienis assentire, went to Demetrius, and he told him that Nicanor had assented to foreign interests,Judamque regni insidiatorem successorem sibi destinasse.and that he had chosen Judas, a traitor to the kingdom, as his successor.
Itaque rex exasperatus,And so the king,et pessimis hujus criminationibus irritatus, being exasperated and provoked by this very wicked accusation, scripsit Nicanori, wrote to Nicanor, dicens graviter quidem se ferre de amicitiæ conventione, saying that he was certainly overburdened by the agreement of alliance, jubere tamen Machabæum citius vinctum mittere Antiochiam.and he ordered him nevertheless to send Maccabeus quickly to Antioch in chains.
Quibus cognitis,When this was known,Nicanor consternabatur,Nicanor was in consternation,et graviter ferebat, si ea quæ convenerant irrita faceret, and he took it grievously that he would make void the things that were agreed, nihil læsus a viro:having received no injury from the man.
sed quia regi resistere non poterat,But, because he was not able to oppose the king, opportunitatem observabat qua præceptum perficeret.he watched for an opportunity to follow through with the orders.
At Machabæus,But Maccabeus, videns secum austerius agere Nicanorem, seeing that Nicanor acted more formally with him, and that,et consuetum occursum ferocius exhibentem, when they met together as usual, he exhibited insolence, intelligens non ex bono esse austeritatem istam, understood this austerity not to be from goodness.paucis suorum congregatis,So, gathering together a few men, occultavit se a Nicanore.he hid himself from Nicanor.
Quod cum ille cognovit,But when he realized that he was effectively prevented by the man, fortiter se a viro præventum,he went to the greatest and holiest temple, venit ad maximum et sanctissimum templum:and he ordered the priests,et sacerdotibus solitas hostias offerentibus, offering the usual sacrifices, jussit sibi tradi virum.to deliver the man to him.
Quibus cum juramento dicentibus nescire se ubi esset qui quærebatur,When these spoke oaths to him that they did not know where he who was being sought was, extendens manum ad templum,he extended his hand toward the temple,
juravit, and he swore, dicens:saying:Nisi Judam mihi vinctum tradideritis,“Unless you deliver Judas to me in chains, istud Dei fanum in planitiem deducam,I will reduce this shrine of God to the ground,et altare effodiam, and I will dig up the altar,et templum hoc Libero patri consecrabo.and I will consecrate this temple to Liber the father.”
Et his dictis abiit. And having said this,Sacerdotes autem protendentes manus in cælum,he departed. But the priests, extending their hands toward heaven, invocabant eum qui semper propugnator esset gentis ipsorum, called upon him who had always fought for his people,hæc dicentes:saying this:
Tu, Domine universorum,“O Lord of the universe, qui nullius indiges, who needs nothing, voluisti templum habitationis tuæ fieri in nobis.you willed that the temple of your dwelling should be with us.
Et nunc,And now,Sancte sanctorum, omnium Domine,O Lord, Holy of all holies, conserva in æternum impollutam domum istam, preserve unpolluted, until eternity, this house,quæ nuper mundata est.which was recently made clean.”
Razias autem quidam de senioribus ab Jerosolymis delatus est Nicanori,Then Razias, a certain one of the elders from Jerusalem, was brought before Nicanor;vir amator civitatis, the man was of good reputation,et bene audiens:and was one who loved the city.qui pro affectu pater Judæorum appellabatur. For his affection, he was called the father of the Jews.
Hic multis temporibus continentiæ propositum tenuit in Judaismo,This one, for a long time, held on to his purpose of continuing in Judaism, corpusque et animam tradere contentus pro perseverantia.and he was content to hand over body and life, so that he might persevere in it.
Volens autem Nicanor manifestare odium quod habebat in Judæos,Then Nicanor, being willing to manifest the hatred that he held for the Jews, misit milites quingentos ut eum comprehenderent.sent five hundred soldiers to apprehend him.
Putabat enim,For he thought,si illum decepisset,if he mistreated him,se cladem Judæis maximam illaturum.it would bring great disaster upon the Jews.
Turbis autem irruere in domum ejus,Now, as the group sought to rush into his house,et januam dirumpere:and to break open the door, atque ignem admovere cupientibus, and wanting even to bring in fire, cum jam comprehenderetur,as he was about to be apprehended, gladio se petiit,he struck himself with the sword:
eligens nobiliter mori potius quam subditus fieri peccatoribus, choosing to prefer to die nobly rather than to become subject to sinners,et contra natales suos indignis injuriis agi.or to suffer unworthy injustices against his birth.
Sed cum per festinationem non certo ictu plagam dedisset, et turbæ intra ostia irrumperent, recurrens audacter ad murum præcipitavit semetipsum viriliter in turbas:But, since he had, in haste, not obtained the certitude of a decisive wound, and the crowd was breaking in the doors, he, running boldly to the wall, manfully threw himself down upon the crowd.
quibus velociter locum dantibus casui ejus,But they quickly provided a place for his fall, venit per mediam cervicem.so he landed at the middle of the neck.
Et cum adhuc spiraret,And, since he was still breathing, accensus animo, and being inflamed in soul, surrexit,he rose up,et cum sanguis ejus magno fluxu deflueret, and as his blood flowed down in a great stream,et gravissimis vulneribus esset saucius, being very gravely wounded, cursu turbam pertransiit:he ran through the crowd.
et stans supra quamdam petram præruptam,And standing upon a certain steep rock,et jam exsanguis effectus, and being now almost without blood, complexus intestina sua, grasping his intestines with both hands, utrisque manibus projecit super turbas,he threw himself over the crowd, invocans dominatorem vitæcalling upon the Ruler of life as well as spirit,ac spiritus ut hæc illi iterum redderet:to restore these to him again.atque ita vita defunctus est.And so he passed away from this life.
