In illo tempore abiit Jesus per sata sabbato: discipuli autem ejus esurientes cœperunt vellere spicas, et manducare. At that time, Jesus went out through the ripe grain on the Sabbath. And his disciples, being hungry, began to separate the grain and to eat.

Pharisæi autem videntes,Then the Pharisees, seeing this, dixerunt ei:said to him,Ecce discipuli tui faciunt quod non licet facere sabbatis.“Behold, your disciples are doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbaths.”

At ille dixit eis:But he said to them:Non legistis quid fecerit David,“Have you not read what David did, quando esuriit, when he was hungry,et qui cum eo erant:and those who were with him:

quomodo intravit in domum Dei,how he entered the house of Godet panes propositionis comedit, and ate the bread of the Presence, quos non licebat ei edere, which was not lawful for him to eat, neque his qui cum eo erant, nor for those who were with him, nisi solis sacerdotibus?but only for the priests?

aut non legistis in lege quia sabbatis sacerdotes in templo sabbatum violant,Or have you not read in the law, that on the Sabbaths the priests in the temple violate the Sabbath,et sine crimine sunt?and they are without guilt?

Dico autem vobis,But I say to you, quia templo major est hic.that something greater than the temple is here.

Si autem sciretis, quid est:And if you knew what this means,Misericordiam volo,‘I desire mercy,et non sacrificium:and not sacrifice,’numquam condemnassetis innocentes:you would never have condemned the innocent.

dominus enim est Filius hominis etiam sabbati. For the Son of man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”

Et cum inde transisset,And when he had passed from there, venit in synagogam eorum.he went into their synagogues.

Et ecce homo manum habens aridam,And behold, there was a man who had a withered hand,et interrogabant eum, dicentes:and they questioned him, so that they might accuse him,Si licet sabbatis curare? ut accusarent eum.saying, “Is it lawful to cure on the Sabbaths?”

Ipse autem dixit illis:But he said to them:Quis erit ex vobis homo,“Who is there among you,qui habeat ovem unam, having even one sheep,et si ceciderit hæc sabbatis in foveam,if it will have fallen into a pit on the Sabbath, nonne tenebit et levabit eam?would not take hold of it and lift it up?

Quanto magis melior est homo ove?How much better is a man than a sheep? And so,itaque licet sabbatis benefacere.it is lawful to do good on the Sabbaths.”

Tunc ait homini:Then he said to the man,Extende manum tuam. Et extendit,“Extend your hand.” And he extended it,et restituta est sanitati sicut altera.and it was restored to health, just like the other one.

Exeuntes autem pharisæi,Then the Pharisees, departing, consilium faciebant adversus eum, quomodo perderent eum.took council against him, as to how they might destroy him.

Jesus autem sciens recessit inde:But Jesus, knowing this, withdrew from there.et secuti sunt eum multi,And many followed him,et curavit eos omnes:and he cured them all.

et præcepit eis ne manifestum eum facerent. And he instructed them, lest they make him known.

Ut adimpleretur quod dictum est per Isaiam prophetam,Then what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah was fulfilled, dicentem:saying:

Ecce puer meus, quem elegi,“Behold, my servant whom I have chosen, dilectus meus, in quo bene complacuit animæ meæ.my beloved in whom my soul is well pleased.Ponam spiritum meum super eum,I will place my Spirit over him,et judicium gentibus nuntiabit.and he shall announce judgment to the nations.

Non contendet,He shall not contend, neque clamabit, nor cry out, neque audiet aliquis in plateis vocem ejus:neither shall anyone hear his voice in the streets.

arundinem quassatam non confringet,He shall not crush the bruised reed,et linum fumigans non extinguet, and he shall not extinguish the smoking wick, donec ejiciat ad victoriam judicium:until he sends forth judgment unto victory.

et in nomine ejus gentes sperabunt. And the Gentiles shall hope in his name.”

Tunc oblatus est ei dæmonium habens,Then one who had a demon,cæcus, who was blind and mute,et mutus, was brought to him.et curavit eum ita ut loqueretur,And he cured him,et videret.so that he spoke and saw.

Et stupebant omnes turbæ,And all the crowds were stupefied,et dicebant:and they said,Numquid hic est filius David?“Could this be the son of David?”

Pharisæi autem audientes,But the Pharisees, hearing it,dixerunt:said,Hic non ejicit dæmones nisi in Beelzebub principe dæmoniorum.“This man does not cast out demons, except by Beelzebub, the prince of the demons.”

Jesus autem sciens cogitationes eorum,But Jesus, dixit eis:knowing their thoughts,Omne regnum divisum contra se desolabitur:said to them:et omnis civitas vel domus divisa contra se,“Every kingdom divided against itself will become desolate.non stabit. And every city or house divided against itself will not stand.

Et si Satanas Satanam ejicit,So if Satan casts out Satan, adversus se divisus est:then he is divided against himself.quomodo ergo stabit regnum ejus? How then will his kingdom stand?

Et si ego in Beelzebub ejicio dæmones,And if I cast out demons by Beelzebub, filii vestri in quo ejiciunt?by whom do your own sons cast them out?ideo ipsi judices vestri erunt. Therefore, they shall be your judges.

Si autem ego in Spiritu Dei ejicio dæmones,But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God,igitur pervenit in vos regnum Dei.then the kingdom of God has arrived among you.

Aut quomodo potest quisquam intrare in domum fortis,Or how can anyone enter into the house of a strong man,et vasa ejus diripere, and plunder his belongings, nisi prius alligaverit fortem?unless he first restrains the strong man?et tunc domum illius diripiet. And then he will plunder his house.

Qui non est mecum,Whoever is not with me,contra me est;is against me.et qui non congregat mecum,And whoever does not gather with me,spargit.scatters.

Ideo dico vobis:For this reason,Omne peccatumI say to you:et blasphemia remittetur hominibus,Every sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven men,Spiritus autem blasphemia non remittetur.but blasphemy against the Spirit shall not be forgiven.

Et quicumque dixerit verbum contra Filium hominis, remittetur ei:And anyone who will have spoken a word against the Son of man shall be forgiven.qui autem dixerit contra Spiritum Sanctum, non remittetur ei,But whoever will have spoken against the Holy Spirit shall not be forgiven, neque in hoc sæculo, neither in this age, neque in futuro.nor in the future age.

Aut facite arborem bonam,Either make the tree goodet fructum ejus bonum:and its fruit good, aut facite arborem malam,or make the tree evilet fructum ejus malum:and its fruit evil.siquidem ex fructu arbor agnoscitur. For certainly a tree is known by its fruit.

Progenies viperarum,Progeny of vipers, quomodo potestis bona loqui, how are you able to speak good things while you are evil?cum sitis mali? For out of the abundance of the heart,ex abundantia enim cordis os loquitur.the mouth speaks.

Bonus homo de bono thesauro profert bona:A good man offers good things from a good storehouse.et malus homo de malo thesauro profert mala. And an evil man offers evil things from an evil storehouse.

Dico autem vobis quoniam omne verbum otiosum,But I say to you, quod locuti fuerint homines, that for every idle word which men will have spoken, reddent rationem de eo in die judicii.they shall render an account in the day of judgment.

Ex verbis enim tuis justificaberisFor by your words shall you be justified,et ex verbis tuis condemnaberis.and by your words shall you be condemned.”

Tunc responderunt ei quidam de scribis et pharisæis,Then certain ones from the scribes and the Pharisees responded to him, dicentes:saying,Magister,“Teacher, volumus a te signum videre.we want to see a sign from you.”

Qui respondens ait illis:And answering,Generatio malahe said to them:et adultera signum quærit:“An evil and adulterous generation seeks a sign.et signum non dabitur ei,But a sign will not be given to it,nisi signum Jonæ prophetæ.except the sign of the prophet Jonah.

Sicut enim fuit Jonas in ventre ceti tribus diebus, et tribus noctibus,For just as Jonah was in the belly of the whale for three days and three nights, sic erit Filius hominis in corde terræ tribus diebus et tribus noctibus.so shall the Son of man be in the heart of the earth for three days and three nights.

Viri Ninivitæ surgent in judicio cum generatione ista,The men of Nineveh shall arise in judgment with this generation,et condemnabunt eam:and they shall condemn it. For,quia pœnitentiam egerunt in prædicatione Jonæ,at the preaching of Jonah, they repented. And behold,et ecce plus quam Jonas hic.there is a greater than Jonah here.

Regina austri surget in judicio cum generatione ista,The Queen of the South shall arise in judgment with this generation,et condemnabit eam:and she shall condemn it.quia venit a finibus terræ audire sapientiam Salomonis,For she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon. And behold,et ecce plus quam Salomon hic.there is a greater than Solomon here.

Cum autem immundus spiritus exierit ab homine,Now when an unclean spirit departs from a man, ambulat per loca arida,he walks through dry places,quærens requiem, seeking rest,et non invenit.and he does not find it.

Tunc dicit:Then he says,Revertar in domum meam,‘I will return to my house,unde exivi.from which I departed’.Et veniens invenit eam vacantem,And arriving, he finds it vacant,scopis mundatam,swept clean,et ornatam.and decorated.

Tunc vadit, et assumit septem alios spiritus secum nequiores se,Then he goes and takes with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself,et intrantes habitant ibi:and they enter in and live there.et fiunt novissima hominis illius pejora prioribus. And in the end, the man becomes worse than he was at first. So,Sic erit et generationi huic pessimæ.too, shall it be with this most wicked generation.”

Adhuc eo loquente ad turbas,While he was still speaking to the crowds, ecce mater ejusbehold,et fratres stabant foris, his mother and his brothers were standing outside,quærentes loqui ei.seeking to speak with him.

Dixit autem ei quidam:And someone said to him: “Behold,Ecce mater tua, et fratres tui foris stant quærentes te.your mother and your brothers are standing outside, seeking you.”

At ipse respondens dicenti sibi,But responding to the one speaking to him, ait:he said,Quæ est mater mea,“Which one is my mother,et qui sunt fratres mei?and who are my brothers?”

Et extendens manum in discipulos suos,And extending his hand to his disciples, dixit:he said:Ecce mater mea,“Behold:et fratres mei.my mother and my brothers.

Quicumque enim fecerit voluntatem Patris mei,For anyone who does the will of my Father, qui in cælis est,who is in heaven, ipse meus frater, the same is my brother,et soror, and sister,et mater est.and mother.”
