Et cum appropinquassent Jerosolymis,And when they had drawn near to Jerusalem,et venissent Bethphage ad montem Oliveti:and had arrived at Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, tunc Jesus misit duos discipulos, then Jesus sent two disciples,
dicens eis:saying to them:Ite in castellum, quod contra vos est,“Go into the town that is opposite you,et statim invenietis asinam alligatam, and immediately you will find a donkey tied,et pullum cum ea:and a colt with her.solvite,Release them,et adducite mihi:and lead them to me.
et si quis vobis aliquid dixerit,And if anyone will have said anything to you, dicite quia Dominus his opus habet:say that the Lord has need of them.et confestim dimittet eos.And he will promptly dismiss them.”
Hoc autem totum factum est,Now all this was done in order to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet,ut adimpleretur quod dictum est per prophetam dicentem:saying,
Dicite filiæ Sion:“Tell the daughter of Zion:Ecce rex tuus venit tibi mansuetus,Behold, your king comes to you meekly, sedens super asinam, sitting on a donkey and on a colt,et pullum filium subjugalis.the son of one accustomed to the yoke.”
Euntes autem discipuli fecerunt sicut præcepit illis Jesus. Then the disciples, going out, did just as Jesus instructed them.
Et adduxerunt asinam,And they brought the donkeyet pullum:and the colt,et imposuerunt super eos vestimenta sua,and they laid their garments on them,et eum desuper sedere fecerunt.and they helped him sit upon them.
Plurima autem turba straverunt vestimenta sua in via:Then a very numerous crowd spread their garments on the way.alii autem cædebant ramos de arboribus,But others cut branches from the treeset sternebant in via:and scattered them on the way.
turbæ autem, quæ præcedebant,And the crowds that preceded him,et quæ sequebantur, and those that followed, clamabant, cried out, dicentes: Hosanna filio David:saying: “Hosanna to the Son of David!benedictus, qui venit in nomine Domini:Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.hosanna in altissimis.Hosanna in the highest!”
Et cum intrasset Jerosolymam,And when he had entered into Jerusalem, commota est universa civitas, the entire city was stirred up,dicens:saying,Quis est hic?“Who is this?”
Populi autem dicebant:But the people were saying,Hic est Jesus propheta a Nazareth Galilææ.“This is Jesus, the Prophet from Nazareth of Galilee.”
Et intravit Jesus in templum Dei,And Jesus entered into the temple of God,et ejiciebat omnes vendentes et ementes in templo, and he cast out all who were selling and buying in the temple,et mensas numulariorum, et cathedras vendentium columbas evertit:and he overturned the tables of the money changers and the chairs of the vendors of doves.
et dicit eis:And he said to them:Scriptum est:“It is written:Domus mea domus orationis vocabitur:‘My house shall be called a house of prayer.vos autem fecistis illam speluncam latronum. But you have made it into a den of robbers.’”
Et accesserunt ad eum cæci,And the blindet claudi in templo:and the lame drew near to him in the temple;et sanavit eos.and he healed them.
Videntes autem principes sacerdotum et scribæ mirabilia quæ fecit,Then the leaders of the priests and the scribes became indignant,et pueros clamantes in templo, seeing the miracles that he wrought,et dicentes:and the children crying out in the temple,Hosanna filio David:saying, indignati sunt,“Hosanna to the Son of David!”
et dixerunt ei:And they said to him,Audis quid isti dicunt?“Do you hear what these ones are saying?”Jesus autem dixit eis:But Jesus said to them,Utique.“Certainly.Numquam legistis:Have you never read:Quia ex ore infantiumFor out of the mouth of babes and infants,et lactentium perfecisti laudem?you have perfected praise?”
Et relictis illis,And leaving them behind, abiit foras extra civitatem in Bethaniam:he went out, beyond the city, into Bethania, ibique mansit.and he lodged here.
Mane autem revertens in civitatem,Then, as he was returning to the city in the morning, esuriit.he was hungry.
Et videns fici arborem unam secus viam,And seeing a certain fig tree beside the way, venit ad eam:he approached it.et nihil invenit in ea nisi folia tantum,And he found nothing on it, except only leaves.et ait illi:And he said to it,Numquam ex te fructus nascatur in sempiternum.“May fruit never spring forth from you, for all time.”Et arefacta est continuo ficulnea. And immediately the fig tree was dried up.
Et videntes discipuli,And seeing this, mirati sunt, the disciples wondered, dicentes:saying,Quomodo continuo aruit?“How did it dry up so quickly?”
Respondens autem Jesus,And Jesus responded to them by saying:ait eis:“Amen I say to you,Amen dico vobis,if you have faithsi habueritis fidem, and do not hesitate,et non hæsitaveritis, not only shall you do this, non solum de ficulnea facietis, concerning the fig tree, sed et si monti huic dixeritis:but even if you would say to this mountain,Tolle,‘Takeet jacta te in mare, and cast yourself into the sea,’fiet.it shall be done.
Et omnia quæcumque petieritis in oratione credentes,And all things whatsoever that you shall ask for in prayer: believing, accipietis.you shall receive.”
Et cum venisset in templum,And when he had arrived at the temple, accesserunt ad eum docentem principes sacerdotum,as he was teaching,et seniores populi, the leaders of the priests and the elders of the people approached him, dicentes:saying:In qua potestate hæc facis?“By what authority do you do these things?et quis tibi dedit hanc potestatem? And who has given this authority to you?”
Respondens Jesus dixit eis:In response,Interrogabo vosJesus said to them:et ego unum sermonem:“I also will question you with one word:quem si dixeritis mihi,if you tell me this,et ego vobis dicam in qua potestate hæc facio.I also will tell you by what authority I do these things.
Baptismus Joannis unde erat? The baptism of John, where was it from?e cælo, an ex hominibus? Was it from heaven, or from men?”At illi cogitabant inter se, dicentes:But they thought within themselves, saying:
Si dixerimus,“If we say,e cælo,‘From heaven,’dicet nobis:he will say to us,Quare ergo non credidistis illi?‘Then why did you not believe him?’Si autem dixerimus,But if we say,ex hominibus,‘From men,’timemus turbam:we have the crowd to fear, omnes enim habebant Joannem sicut prophetam.for they all hold John to be a prophet.”
Et respondentes Jesu,And so,dixerunt:they answered Jesus by saying,Nescimus.“We do not know.”Ait illis et ipse:So he also said to them:Nec ego dico vobis in qua potestate hæc facio.“Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.
Quid autem vobis videtur? But how does it seem to you?Homo quidam habebat duos filios,A certain man had two sons.et accedens ad primum,And approaching the first, dixit:he said:Fili,‘Son,vade hodie, operare in vinea mea.go out today to work in my vineyard.’
Ille autem respondens,And responding,ait:he said,Nolo.‘I am not willing.’Postea autem,But afterwards,pœnitentia motus,being moved by repentance,abiit.he went.
Accedens autem ad alterum,And approaching the other,dixit similiter.he spoke similarly.At ille respondens,And answering,ait:he said,Eo,‘I am going,domine,lord.’et non ivit:And he did not go.
quis ex duobus fecit voluntatem patris?Which of the two did the will of the father?”Dicunt ei:They said to him,Primus.“The first.”Dicit illis Jesus:Jesus said to them:Amen dico vobis,“Amen I say to you, quia publicanithat tax collectors and prostitutes shall precede you,et meretrices præcedent vos in regnum Dei.into the kingdom of God.
Venit enim ad vos Joannes in via justitiæ,For John came to you in the way of justice,et non credidistis ei:and you did not believe him.publicani autemBut the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him.et meretrices crediderunt ei:Yet even after seeing this, vos autem videntes nec pœnitentiam habuistis postea, you did not repent,ut crederetis ei.so as to believe him.
Aliam parabolam audite:Listen to another parable.Homo erat paterfamilias,There was a man, the father of a family, qui plantavit vineam, who planted a vineyard,et sepem circumdedit ei,and surrounded it with a hedge,et fodit in ea torcular, and dug a press in it,et ædificavit turrim, and built a tower.et locavit eam agricolis,And he loaned it out to farmers,et peregre profectus est.and he set out to sojourn abroad.
Cum autem tempus fructuum appropinquasset,Then, when the time of the fruits drew near, misit servos suos ad agricolas,he sent his servants to the farmers,ut acciperent fructus ejus.so that they might receive its fruits.
Et agricolæ, apprehensis servis ejus,And the farmers apprehended his servants;alium ceciderunt, they struck one, alium occiderunt, and killed another, alium vero lapidaverunt.and stoned yet another.
Iterum misit alios servos plures prioribus,Again, he sent other servants, more than before;et fecerunt illis similiter.and they treated them similarly.
Novissime autem misit ad eos filium suum,Then, at the very end, he sent his son to them, dicens:saying:Verebuntur filium meum.‘They will revere my son.’
Agricolæ autem videntes filium dixerunt intra se:But the farmers, seeing the son, said among themselves:Hic est hæres, venite,‘This is the heir. Come, occidamus eum,let us kill him,et habebimus hæreditatem ejus.and then we will have his inheritance.’
Et apprehensum eum ejecerunt extra vineam,And apprehending him, they cast him outside the vineyard,et occiderunt.and they killed him.
Cum ergo venerit dominus vineæ,Therefore, when the lord of the vineyard arrives, quid faciet agricolis illis?what will he do to those farmers?”
Aiunt illi:They said to him,Malos male perdet:“He will bring those evil men to an evil end,et vineam suam locabit aliis agricolis, and he will loan out his vineyard to other farmers, qui reddant ei fructum temporibus suis.who shall repay to him the fruit in its time.”
Dicit illis Jesus:Jesus said to them:Numquam legistis in Scripturis:“Have you never read in the Scriptures:Lapidem quem reprobaverunt ædificantes, hic factus est in caput anguli:‘The stone that the builders have rejected has become the cornerstone.a Domino factum est istud,By the Lord has this been done,et est mirabile in oculis nostris?and it is wonderful in our eyes?’
Ideo dico vobis,Therefore, I say to you, quia auferetur a vobis regnum Dei,that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you,et dabitur genti facienti fructus ejus.and it shall be given to a people who shall produce its fruits.
Et qui ceciderit super lapidem istum,And whoever will have fallen on this stone shall be broken, confringetur:yet truly, super quem vero ceciderit,on whomever it shall fall, conteret eum.it will crush him.”
Et cum audissent principes sacerdotumAnd when the leaders of the priests,et pharisæi parabolas ejus, and the Pharisees had heard his parables, cognoverunt quod de ipsis diceret.they knew that he was speaking about them.
Et quærentes eum tenere,And though they sought to take hold of him, timuerunt turbas:they feared the crowds, quoniam sicut prophetam eum habebant.because they held him to be a prophet.
